‘Kingdom’: Madras HC directs T.N. police to protect theatres screening Vijay Deverakonda-starrer in case of disruptions

The Madras High Court, on Thursday (August 7, 2025), directed the Tamil Nadu police to provide adequate protection to cinema theatres screening Vijay Deverakonda-starrer Kingdom if there were reports of threats issued to theatre owners or of the screening being disrupted by any individual/organisation.

Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy passed the orders while disposing of a writ petition filed by SSI Production, which had bagged the Tamil Nadu theatrical rights of the trilingual movie released in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi, complaining about threats issued to theatre owners by Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) members across the State.

The petitioner’s counsel told the court that NTK chief coordinator S. Seeman had tweeted against the movie on his X handle on August 4, alleging that it portrays the Tamil Eelam issue in a derogatory manner, and since then, his party members had begun to disrupt the screenings in many theatres.

He played to the court videos of the movie’s posters and flex boards having been damaged in some places and claimed that in some theatres, the protesters had entered the cinema hall and registered their objection to its content in an attempt to dissuade the public from watching the movie.

Letters written by NTK members to some of the theatre owners in the State were also produced before the court. Government Advocate (criminal side) said, so far, 16 persons had been arrested in connection with the issue and that multiple demonstrations had been conducted by the NTK cadre.

On the other hand, advocate S. Shankar, representing Mr. Seeman, told the court his client, being the leader of a political party, had only opposed the content of the movie but had not prevented anyone from screening it. He also said that only peaceful protests were undertaken against the movie in a democratic manner.

Stating that a few isolated incidents leading to the arrest of 16 people need not be blown out of proportion, he said, it was not right on the part of the makers of Kingdom to portray as though all Sri Lankan Tamils were not natives but only migrants, and that all of them were indulging in illegal activities such as smuggling.

Intervening at this point, Justice Chakravarthy said, “You and I may not agree with the content of the movie if it is very, very abhorrent as you say… Some issues may be close to our heart, but another person may have a different view on that. The artistic freedom in a democracy will have to be protected always.”

In the same breath, agreeing that a political party also has a right to register its protest, the judge said, such protest must be conducted after obtaining due permission from the police and at a place earmarked by the police for the conduct of demonstrations, fast, and so on, he said.

“In a democracy, the creator of a movie has got every right to express his fair views. In this case, it is the specific case of the writ petitioner that Kingdom is a work of fiction. Even if the views expressed in a movie are abhorrent or unpalatable, no third party can prevent the exhibition of the movie or threaten the theatre owners after the censor board had cleared it for screening in theatres,” the judge said.

Probe in rape case against Vedan in preliminary stage, says Kochi City police chief

The investigation in the rape case registered against Malayalam rapper and song writer Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, is in the preliminary stage and he is yet to be issued notice to appear, said District Police Chief (Kochi City) Putta Vimaladitya.

Talking to reporters in Kochi on Thursday (August 7, 2025), Mr. Vimaladitya said accusations of financial transactions are also being probed and that relevant sections will be invoked in the event the police get hold of any evidence to substantiate these.

“The petitioner has said that some people were aware about the happenings. We will verify it with the persons concerned and record their statements. Further action will be taken accordingly,” said Mr. Vimaladitya.

The Thrikkakara police registered the case against Vedan after the petitioner, a young doctor, approached the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kochi City) with the complaint that she was sexually abused on the promise of marriage, on July 30. The police registered the case after recording the petitioner’s statement.

The incidents leading to the complaint were found to have taken place a few years ago. The case was registered by the Thrikkakara police after it was mentioned as one of the places where the alleged sexual abuse on the promise of marriage took place.

Reportedly, the petitioner came forward with the complaint after she had came across the account of another woman who had similar experiences with Vedan that she allegedly faced.

Vedan has faced sexual abuse allegations in the past as well during the height of the ‘#MeToo’ movement.

The Hill Palace police in Kochi arrested Vedan along with eight other friends allegedly with six grams of ganja from his apartment near Vyttila in Kochi on April 28, 2025. While he was released on bail in that case, he was immediately arrested by the Forest department after he was found possessing a leopard-tooth pendant. He claimed that it was gifted to him by a fan. He was later released on bail in that case as well.

Since then, he had run-ins with the BJP and Sangh Parivar outfits after a BJP councillor of Palakkad municipality lodged a complaint against Vedan accusing that his music defamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and promoted caste divisions.

Goren bridge: what next? – The Hindu

Today’s deal is from the Cavendish Invitational Pairs a few years ago. Top players from around the world are invited to play with big cash prizes for the high finishers. West was Antonio Sementa, one of the many fine players coming from Italy.

Sementa’s four-heart bid was twoway – it might make, or it might push the opponents too high. Good defense would have defeated four hearts by two tricks, but North didn’t know that. He soldiered on to four spades hoping for the best. Four spades is a poor contract, but with a 2-2 spade split, the ace of clubs onside, and the jack of diamonds dropping, it might make against less than perfect defense.

Sementa led the ace of hearts, seeing the two from partner. What next? It was tempting to lead a safe heart and not break either of the minor suits, but Sementa found the winning defense of cashing the ace of clubs and leading another club. Playing any other suit would allow declarer to play two rounds of trumps. A club shift then would allow declarer to win with the king and lead diamonds. The fall of the jack would allow the discard of a low club. This play by Sementa set up a second club trick for the defense before the trumps were drawn and Sementa cashed the jack of clubs when in with the king of spades. Well judged in the bidding and the play by Sementa.

Actor Shwetha Menon approaches Kerala High Court seeking to quash FIR

Actor Shwetha Menon approached the Kerala High Court on Thursday (August 7, 2025) seeking to quash an FIR registered against her by the Ernakulam Central Police on the charge that she performed roles in movies having alleged vulgar and obscene contents for financial gains and that the contents were transmitted via social media and adult sites to gain popularity.

She had thus been charged under Section 67(A) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and under Sections 3 and 5 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 based on a complaint by Martin Menachery, an Ernakulam resident, after the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court issued a directive to the police.

Alleging that the FIR was malafide and ill-motivated, Ms. Menon submitted in her petition before the High Court that the movies had been certified by the CBFC and were publicly exhibited years ago.

“I have good reputation in society and have been implicated as an accused in a crime because of mindless reference of a complaint to the police by a magistrate. The complaint raises absurd and fanciful allegations which do not attract the offences alleged even prima facie,” she said.

It is crucial to note that the character that the petitioner portrayed in the film Paleri Manikyam, which the complainant says as obscene, bagged the Kerala State award for best actress. The other films made mention of (by the complainant) too were accepted and appreciated in public domain by their quality as a whole, she said in the petition.

These films were created by artistes who were at the pinnacle of proficiency in their respective fields. An appearance in a condom advertisement too was duly censored and certified and is available in the public domain, she said in the petition.

The FIR against the actor has come at a time when she is contesting for the post of the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), in the election to the executive committee of the actors’ body to be held on August 15.

‘Takopi’s Original Sin’ series review: The lacerating horrors of meaning well

Takopi’s Original Sin is disarmingly cute and disarmingly fast. One moment you’re chuckling at a squidgy octopus thing who speaks in baby talk, and before you know it, you’re blinking too hard at the obliviating black mirror, suddenly aware of how absurdly exposed you are. Directed by Shinya Iino and based on Taizan 5’s manga, this year’s breakout hit anime follows an adorable alien who befriends a lonely child and deploys whimsical gadgets to fix her problems. The premise is charming enough to lull you into nostalgia, especially if you grew up with its obvious spiritual predecessor, Doraemon. But whatever warm childhood innocence you may feel gets violently ejected by the end of the first episode.

Six episodes. That’s all it takes. In that time, Takopi burns through suicide, child abuse, bullying, parental neglect, moral injury, and the sheer, existential nausea of trying to do good in this sick, depraved world. It’s not long, but it’s lacerating. And it absolutely earns the trigger warning it comes with, though no warning quite prepares you for what it’s actually willing to say.

The plot follows the titular pink, cephalopod-like alien from the saccharine “Happy Planet,” who is sent to Earth to bring happiness. He meets a quiet, sullen girl named Shizuka who is living what can only be described as a waking nightmare. She is beaten at school, abandoned at home, and slowly disappearing into that hollow place children go when the adults around them stop looking. Oblivious to the nuance of human suffering, Takopi’s attempts to help her are clumsy and naive. He hugs her abuser. He giggles when she cries. He believes in the fundamental goodness of talking it out and sharing snacks. That is, until [SPOILERS]

Shizuka kills herself before the first episode ends.

The moment is absolutely petrifying, and it kicks off the real start of the show. The distraught and bewildered Takopi reaches for a gadget that allows him to rewind time, hoping to “get it right” on the next try, in looping attempts to alleviate trauma. This is not a story about getting it right, but about being wrong in increasingly heartbreaking ways.

Takopi’s Original Sin (Japanese)

Director: Shinya Iino

Cast: Kurumi Mamiya, Reina Ueda, Honoka Kuroki,  Anna Nagase

Episodes: 6

Runtime: 22-35 minutes

Storyline: Happy alien Takopi, meets Shizuka, a lonely fourth grader. But as he uncovers the pain in her life, Takopi learns that true happiness may require more than gadgets

What’s astonishing is how gently the series unfolds. It’s devoid of all edge-lord irony or sensationalist trauma-porn, and closer in tone to the unvarnished precision in Grave of the Fireflies or A Silent Voice, that doesn’t let you look anywhere else. Even the time travel doesn’t feel gimmicky; it’s just another form of helplessness, born from that all-too-familiar ache of “If only I had…”

Iino directs with formidable restraint. Each frame holds a kind of clinical stillness that forces us to sit with every unspoken thing. And then just when we’ve adjusted to its reticence, it fractures with light and shadow crashing in, and emotions surging through jagged expressionist flourishes like a nervous system suddenly exposed.

But what makes Takopi one of the finest anime in recent memory is its clarity. The characters are painfully well-drawn, and just as gracefully understood. No one here is simple, and no one gets off easy. The sheer, exhausting effort of trying to make someone else happy when you barely understand what that means is what lingers more than the tragedy itself. Takopi is about what it costs to care, especially when you don’t know how. It’s about the limits of kindness and the absurdity of innocence. The awful beauty of watching someone try, even as they fail, because trying is the only thing they know how to do.

If there is a flaw in Takopi, it’s in the clutter of timelines toward the end. The final two episodes barrel through six years of consequence, intercut with scenes from fractured pasts. The ambition is a bit too much to absorb, and the show stumbles slightly in orienting us within the tangle of perspectives. Nevertheless, the emotional throughline remains intact.

What wrecked me most about Takopi was the way it reminded me of the damage that can come from someone simply not knowing better. We like to think of cruelty as a choice, and kindness as a cure, but the series dismantles both notions. Sometimes people hurt you because they’re hurt. Sometimes they try to save you and make it worse. And sometimes, like Takopi, they just keep showing up, armed with nothing but good intentions and the stubborn belief that love, if repeated enough, might eventually work.

It’s foolishly naive. And it’s probably the most human thing I’ve ever seen a cartoon alien do.

Takopi’s Original Sin is currently streaming on Crunchyroll
