Veteran actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan on Friday (April 11) visited the San Francisco headquarters of the AI-powered search engine Perplexity AI and met the company’s CEO Aravind Srinivas.

Sharing pictures taken during the visit on his Instagram, Kamal said that he was inspired by the experience. “Indian ingenuity shines through @aravindsrinivas and his brilliant team building the future — one question at a time (sic),” he wrote on the caption of the post.

Meanwhile, Aravind shared the pictures on his X handle, writing, “Your passion to still learn and incorporate the cutting edge technology in film making is inspirational. Wish you the best for Thug Life and future projects you are working on!”

While details of what the star discussed with Aravind are unknown at the moment, Aravind’s tweet hints that it might concern employing advanced AI tools in filmmaking, given Kamal’s enthusiasm towards using advanced technology in his films.

Earlier this week, Kamal was in Las Vegas to attend the annual NAB show, which is said to be the largest show for media, entertainment and technology.

An annual trade show produced by the National Association of Broadcasters, it has been held since 1991 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Apart from exhibitors’ booths, the show has lectures, panel discussions and workshops. This year’s show, which concluded on April 9, focused on production tools, AI-driven workflows and new streaming solutions.

On the work front, Kamal is awaiting the release of Indian 3, the sequel to Indian 2, which came out last year. He also has Thug Life, which is directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote the script with Kamal. The film also stars Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Abhirami and Nassar. It reunites Kamal and Mani after their iconic 1987 film Nayakan.

Meanwhile, the veteran actor is also gearing up for his 237th film, helmed by acclaimed action choreographers Anbariv.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will officially recognise the art of stunt work with a new Oscar category for Best Stunt Design, debuting at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028 for films released in 2027. The long-anticipated move marks a historic milestone for a discipline that has been part of cinema since its earliest days.

The announcement follows years of advocacy from within the industry, led in large part by director and former stuntman David Leitch, known for The Fall Guy, Bullet Train, and Deadpool 2. Working alongside veteran stunt coordinator Chris O’Hara, Leitch made several formal presentations to the Academy, which ultimately led to the Board of Governors approving the new category.

“Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang said in a joint statement. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists.”

Leitch called the decision “a long journey for so many of us,” adding, “Chris O’Hara and I have spent years working to bring this moment to life, standing on the shoulders of the stunt professionals who’ve fought tirelessly for recognition over the decades.”

Director Chad Stahelski of John Wick fame praised the move as a thoughtful acknowledgment of the collaborative nature of stunt teams. “It’s very nice to see that the Academy has really heard the voices of the stunt committee,” he told Variety, noting the significance of awarding a department rather than an individual.

The exact criteria and voting rules for the new category will be outlined in the 2027 Academy Awards rulebook. Meanwhile, details around the award’s presentation format will be decided in the coming years.

Jeff Wolfe, president of the Stuntmen’s Association, called the move “a historic moment for our community,” emphasising that it “validates the passion, innovation, creativity and hard work that go into every fall, fight, and fireball.”

The stunt community’s campaign gained traction recently, aided by high-profile films like The Fall Guy and public endorsements from actors like Winston Duke.

Mohanlal and Prithviraj’s L2: Empuraan sees over 80% drop in Week 2 | Malayalam Movie News

Mohanlal and Prithviraj’s L2: Empuraan sees over 80% drop in Week 2

Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s much-awaited Malayalam action-thriller L2: Empuraan has achieved a significant milestone by entering the prestigious Rs 100 crore club in India. The film, a sequel to Lucifer, is only the second Malayalam film after Manjummel Boys to breach the Rs 100 crore India net mark. However, despite the feat, L2: Empuraan witnessed a sharp decline in its second-week collections.

Babil Khan’s Most Emotional Confession: ‘I Wouldn’t Be An Actor…’ | ‘Logout’ EXCLUSIVE

After a strong opening week with Rs 88.25 crore in the domestic market, the film’s collections dipped by over 80% in the second week, managing to earn only Rs 14.8 crore. This significant drop highlights the film’s diminishing hold at the box office post its initial buzz. The film also got entangled in a political controversy leading the makers making voluntary cuts to the film and also lead actor Mohanlal issuing an apology.
Breakdown of the second week shows that Empuraan collected Rs 2.9 crore on its second Friday, which marginally improved over the weekend but dropped steeply from Monday onwards. By Day 15, early estimates suggest the film had settled at Rs 103.05 crore net in India.
Despite the domestic slowdown, L2: Empuraan continues to be a massive global success. It has now become the highest-grossing Malayalam film worldwide, raking in over Rs 250 crore gross across all territories. This puts it ahead of Manjummel Boys, which held the record earlier this year.
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and headlined by superstar Mohanlal, L2: Empuraan builds upon the political and criminal underworld saga introduced in Lucifer. The film was released in five languages—Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi—but the lion’s share of its earnings came from the Malayalam version.
While the steep drop in the second week might concern some, the overall box office journey of Empuraan is nothing short of historic for Malayalam cinema. The work on the third installment has already begun with Prithviraj roping in Mohanlal’s son Pranav to play the younger version of Stephen Nedampally . The film has for now been titled as L3: The Beginning.

Sunny Deol’s Film Lags Behind Salman Khan’s Sikandar, Mints Rs 9.5 Crore

New Delhi:

Jaat finally hit cinema screens on April 10. Headlined by Sunny Deol, the movie made a strong impact at the box office on its opening day. Directed by Gopichand Malineni, the action thriller collected ₹9.5 crore on Day 1, according to Sacnilk. The film recorded an overall 14.28% Hindi occupancy on Thursday. However, the film couldn’t beat the opening day collection of Salman Khan’s Sikandar. The film, which is struggling at the box office, raked in Rs 26 crore on day one.

Jaat features Sunny Deol as Brigadier Baldev Pratap Singh and Randeep Hooda as Ranatunga.

Ahead of the film’s release, Randeep Hooda shared that he has always been a huge fan of Sunny Deol.

The actor shared, “I still remember that we used to have his posters in our cupboards stuck with toothpaste during school days and get inspired.”

“I have always been a huge fan of Sunny Deol. Growing up, we admired his powerful screen presence, his intensity, and his physique. I still remember us having his posters in our school hostel cupboards, looking at them and getting inspired to lift weights and doing push ups,” Randeep Hooda added.

In an NDTV review, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave Jaat 2 out of 5 stars.

He wrote, “Jaat is much ado about a couple of uneaten idlis and an upset man in quest of an apology until bigger issues – the discovery of thorium in coastal Andhra Pradesh, the displacement of villagers who have lived there for centuries, and the corruption of politicians and policemen all too willing to play into the hands of international conspirators.” Click here to read the full review.

Jaat also features Vineet Kumar Singh, Regina Cassandra, Saiyami Kher, Ramya Krishnan and Jagapathi Babu in pivotal roles.

The film has been jointly produced by Naveen Yerneni, Yalamanchili Ravi Shankar, T. G. Vishwa Prasad and Umesh Kumar Bansal under the banners of Mythri Movie Makers, People Media Factory and Zee Studios.

Harlan Coben and Reese Witherspoon: a suspenseful pairing

Four months into 2025, and there are three adaptations of author Harlan Coben’s books on Netflix — Missing You, the Polish adaptation of Just One Look, and Caught, set in Argentina. Two more adaptations are in production, and his latest book, Nobody’s Fool (published by Penguin Random House) has just been released. There is also the thriller he has written with actor-producer Reese Witherspoon coming out in October.

“I can’t share anything about the novel,” says Coben, 63, over a video call from New Jersey, where he lives. “I can, however tell you how it happened. We’ve known each other. Reese has read my books. I’ve seen all her movies. She called saying, ‘I want to talk to you about an idea I had’.” Coben was wondering how to tell Witherspoon that it would not work. “I don’t collaborate on books or stories.”

But when the star of Legally Blonde told Coben her idea, he was sold. “I said, ‘We can also do this’, and we started talking, knocking it back and forth. Next thing you know, I’ve got a pen and paper and I’m starting to write. And three hours later, we’re like, ‘Why don’t we try to write this as a novel together?’”

Witherspoon is the perfect partner, says Coben, whose books have sold over 80 million copies worldwide and been translated into 46 languages. “I don’t know if I’ll collaborate on a novel with anybody else. Reese is so smart, and also is so great with people. She knows when to push me. We helped each other be more creative. With Reese, I would probably do it again.”

Coben says he did most of the writing. “It was mostly about talking out the ideas with her. We created our own mixed voice. We email or text every day and talk about the book all the time. We both are obsessed with it.”

The three shows on Netflix, almost simultaneously, Coben says, is not by design. “It just happened. We were filming them all around the same time. I’m not the one who does the scheduling, Netflix decided to do it this way for the year.”

Next up is an adaptation of his 2023 novel, I Will Find You, with Sam Worthington of Avatar fame playing the father serving a prison sentence for killing his son. “We start filming in a couple weeks, sometime in April. I’m excited about working with Worthington. We are also filming an English series based on my book Run Away (2019), with Minnie Driver, James Nesbitt and Ruth Jones.”

Writer’s empathy

Nobody’s Fool, published last month, is a case of the screen inspiring the book. It marks the second appearance of Detective Sami Kierce from Fool Me Once. “Nobody’s Fool was inspired by the 2024 adaptation of Fool Me Once. Adeel Akhtar is one of my favorite actors and I wanted to work with him for a long time. We hired him to play Kierce for the TV show. And as I watched him, I thought, ‘This guy has got more stories to tell’.”

Taking place a year after the events of Fool Me OnceNobody’s Fool finds Sami at his lowest. “He has lost his job and is in disgrace. When he was 21 years old, he took a college trip with some friends, met a girl and fell in love, like it happens on these kinds of trips. One day he wakes up, to find her murdered, and he runs. Now over 20 years later, he’s teaching a class of misfits at a night school in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He sees a woman in the back of the room, and realises it’s her, it’s Anna, the girl he thought was murdered all those years ago, and his world explodes.”

Every novel starts with an idea, Coben says. “Then I ask, ‘Who’s going to tell the story?’ So sometimes it’s Myron Bolitar, a couple of times it was Wilde [The Boy from the Woods, The Match] and now it is Sami. I do plan on writing Sami again, but man plans and God laughs.”

While the tone of the novel is ironic, like the Myron Bolitar novels, Coben says, Sami is a little more damaged than Myron. “He’s more impetuous and gets himself in trouble. I wanted it to be in first person, which I don’t usually do. I wanted to be in his head, he’s funny. Myron is a big, strong guy, 6’4” and over 200 pounds, while Sami is little and channels things differently.”

Sami, like actor Adeel Akhtar who plays him in the TV adaptation, is of Pakistani origin, says Coben. “Half of him is Pakistani and the other half is something I’ll save for another book.” Their attitudes are different, Coben says, because they come from different worlds. “I wanted the book to be fast-paced and wanted to be with Sami and enjoy his company.”

Though he mostly writes in the third person, Coben says he chose a first-person narrative for Nobody’s Fool “because I wanted it to be Sami’s book”. It was not difficult getting into his head. “I spoke to Adeel a bit and also spoke to some other people, and had them read the book to make sure I didn’t make any mistakes. My job as a writer is to be empathetic — not necessarily sympathetic, but empathetic. You have to be able to see the viewpoint of all the characters in a way that works,” he signs off.

Drama at high noon | Review of The Comeback by Annie Zaidi

Many novelists have explored the interplay between the performing arts and life to illuminate their themes. A recent example that comes to mind is Irish author Anne Enright’s 2020 novel Actress, which is set against the world of theatre and film and delves into a fraught mother-daughter relationship. Annie Zaidi’s The Comeback uses the same world to explore ideas of friendship and self-realisation.

The narrator of Zaidi’s novel is an actor who has changed his name from Jaun Kazim to John K. to gain wider acceptance, a decision that reflects his self-interested approach to navigating the world. After years of auditioning for meaty roles in Mumbai, he strikes gold when a producer listens to his narration of an audiobook and selects him for the central role in the film version.

John is from the town of Baansa, located “north of Lucknow but south of Bareilly”. It was while he was in college here that he was bitten by the acting bug, and his talent was spotted and shaped by Asghar, a close friend and theatre group leader. “His was the hand that had picked up a rock”, John acknowledges, “and polished it into a gemstone”.

Now, however, John is on the cusp of success while Asghar works as a bank employee. After an ill-judged interview with a film publication in which the actor reveals details of their misdemeanours during a college exam, Asghar is fired from his job, much to John’s chagrin.

Asghar retreats to his mother’s house in Baansa with his wife and children to lick his wounds and plan for his future. Holding John responsible for his fate, he refuses to return calls and messages. The rift between the friends grows by the day, even as John devotes himself to signing contracts and “making the most of my moment”.

This, then, is the slim novel’s central predicament, related in a manner that is both economical and absorbing. It contains more than a few touches of broad irony, especially when it comes to the business of art and the way eastern and western dramatic traditions are appropriated by the cognoscenti.

In his late 30s, and with his career now on the skids, John becomes obsessed with finding out what Asghar is up to. When he learns that his old friend is returning to the stage, it feels like “a needle-stab in my heart”. Consumed by envy, he tries his best to be cast in the upcoming production.

Author Annie Zaidi

Coming to terms with the past

The Comeback could well have restricted itself to an insular world in front of the arc lights, but Zaidi adroitly widens the lens to bring in other relationships. She traces John’s shifting bonds with, among others, his ex-wife, his own and Asghar’s family, and a former potential love interest. He also contacts earlier members of his theatre group, one of whom serves as his ears and eyes in discovering Asghar’s next steps. In passing, this leads to a serviceable feint in which the first-person narrative briefly shifts to deal with Asghar’s concerns and dilemmas.

In Prayaag Akbar’s Mother India (2024), a character’s actions leading to guilt and awareness unfold against the backdrop of right-wing social media posts. In The Comeback, social media, particularly Instagram, becomes a vehicle for John to orchestrate his return and make amends, albeit in a characteristically self-serving manner.

In the process, he probes “the twisted innards of honesty” to move towards a redemption of sorts. That means coming to terms with the impact of past actions and dealing with the way his narcissism has hampered relationships. “I might be selfish, an ambitious fool, and a liar, even a coward”, he thinks, “but I do have one good quality: a strong sense of self-preservation”.

‘What’s your soul worth?’ reads a poster tagline for one of the theatre productions delineated in The Comeback. By teasing out the possible answers to this question, the novel suggests that the path towards greater understanding may not be straightforward, but it’s ultimately worth the effort.

The reviewer is a Mumbai-based writer.
