IPL 2025: Class acts Gill, Siraj lead Gujarat Titans' big win over Sunrisers Hyderabad

Shubman Gill‘s classy unbeaten half-century and Mohammed Siraj‘s brilliant four-wicket spell led Gujarat Titans‘ (GT) impressive seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday in Hyderabad.
If it was Siraj who kept the SRH batters on their toes in his spell of 4/17 to limit the hosts to 152 for 8, GT skipper Gill once again showed why he is so highly rated around the world — carrying his bat through with 61 not out off 43 balls.

Siraj, who removed the dangerous SRH openers Travis Head (8) and Abhishek Sharma (18) cheaply before coming back to take two wickets in the 19th over, was named the ‘Player of the Match’. Siraj also took his 100th IPL wicket during his spell.
Later, Gill and Washington Sundar (49 off 29 balls) revived the GT run-chase from 16/2 in 3.5 overs with a 90-run counter-attacking partnership, after the in-form Sai Sudharsan (5) and Jos Buttler (0) were removed in quick succession by Mohammed Shami and Pat Cummins, respectively.
After Gill and Washington’s stand had put GT on course, the ‘impact sub’ Sherfane Rutherford smoked unbeaten 35 off just 16 balls to take the visitors home with 3.2 overs to spare.
Hyderabad suffered their fourth consecutive loss, while Gujarat secured their third victory in the IPL 2025 campaign, which took them to No. 2 on the points table with six points.
The pitch at Hyderabad deviated from its typical batting-friendly nature, presenting a challenging surface where the ball’s pace was considerably slower. Gill, alongside GT debutant Sundar, effectively managed the middle phase of the innings while maintaining a steady scoring rate.
In the over bowled by Simarjeet Singh, Sundar unleashed himself, striking two boundaries and two sixes to amass 20 runs. This big over helped ease the pressure on Gujarat, who were recovering from early setbacks.
The partnership flourished with an impressive scoring rate as both the batters capitalised on poor deliveries. Gill reached his fifty off 36 deliveries, putting Gujarat in a commanding position.
At the other end, Sundar approached his half-century but fell short on 49 when Aniket Verma took an exceptional catch off Shami’s bowling.
Earlier, after being put in to bat, Head hit two boundaries in succession against Siraj, who then claimed his wicket on the over’s last delivery.
The powerplay continued to prove challenging for SRH as Ishan Kishan (17) and Abhishek managed just 29 runs together before Siraj dismissed the latter in the fifth over.
Following the early dismissal of their opening pair, Hyderabad managed 45/2 in the powerplay. Prasidh Krishna claimed Kishan’s wicket in the eighth over.
The partnership between Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen provided some stability to Hyderabad’s innings, as they effectively rotated the strike while facing spinners Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore during the middle overs.
Their fourth-wicket partnership yielded 50 runs before Kishore dismissed both in consecutive overs. Klaasen’s innings of 27 included one six and two boundaries, while Nitish contributed 31 runs from 34 deliveries.
Hyderabad’s aspirations for a strong finish in the final overs suffered a setback when Krishna dismissed Kamindu Mendis (1), reducing them to 120/6 at the end of the 17th over.
Siraj displayed remarkable precision in his final over, claiming the wickets of Aniket Verma (18) and Simarjeet Singh (0) to secure his four-wicket haul. The fast bowler achieved his finest IPL bowling figures, finishing with 4-17.
Cummins (22 not out) struck a boundary and a six, while Shami contributed with a four in Ishant Sharma’s last over, helping the team reach 152/8.
The bowling honours were shared between Siraj and Rashid (2/24) and Krishna (2/25).

Macron Calls For ‘Strong Action’ If Russia Continues To ‘Refuse Peace’

Paris:

French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday called for “strong action” if Russia continued “to refuse peace”, days after a Russian ballistic missile killed nine children in Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown.

Despite US and European efforts to secure peace in Ukraine, Russia continued “to murder children and civilians”, Macron said.

“My thoughts are with the children and all civilian victims of the bloody attacks carried out by Russia, including on April 4 in Kryvyi Rig,” Macron said on X in French and Ukrainian.

“A ceasefire is needed as soon as possible. And strong action if Russia continues to try to buy time and refuse peace.”

On Friday, a missile attack on the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rig killed 20 people, including nine children. The youngest victim was a three-year-old boy. The missile struck a residential area near a children’s playground.

Macron said that even though Ukraine accepted US President Donald Trump’s proposal for a complete ceasefire and European countries were also working to secure peace, “Russia is continuing the war with renewed intensity, with no regard for civilians.”

Zelensky said on Sunday that Moscow was increasing its aerial bombardment after Russia mounted a “massive” missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight, killing two people.

“The pressure on Russia is still insufficient,” he added.

WATCH:
RCB began their IPL 2025 campaign in style, beating defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders by 7 wickets and following it up with a dominant 50-run win over Chennai Super Kings. However, they faced a setback in their third match, losing to Gujarat Titans by 8 wickets.
Up next, RCB face Mumbai Indians in a much-anticipated clash on Monday.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli opened up about his relationship with long-time teammate Rohit Sharma, saying there’s always been a strong trust between them, and that they’ve consistently backed each other to deliver match-winning performances for the team.

Poll

Which match are you most excited about RCB’s upcoming clash against?

“I think it’s a very natural thing to take place when you play with someone for so long and you share so much of your insight of the game. Initially, you’re learning from each other; you’re kind of growing in your careers at probably the same time, and you share all kinds of queries and questions.
“So there’s a lot of back and forth that happens and also the fact that we worked very closely in terms of the leadership for the team. So there were always ideas discussed and more or less we would end up being on the same page in terms of what the gut feel of that particular situation or that particular game demands,” said Kohli in a video posted on RCB’s X account on Sunday.

Bombay Sport Exchange Ep. 2: GroupM’s Vinit Karnik on IPL’s growth and emerging sports

Over the years, Kohli and Rohit have won numerous matches for India and were together in the side winning the 2013 and 2025 Champions Trophy, apart from finishing their T20I careers at the same time after winning the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup.
“There’s a trust factor that builds in terms of you can rely on each other to do the job for the team. We have enjoyed our time playing together for so long for India. We were able to make our careers that long because when we were young, as I said, it was not certain that we were going to end up playing for 15 years for India.
“The journey was so long and consistently (going on). So, very, very, very grateful and very happy for all the memories, all the moments that we’ve shared and continue to do so,” concluded Kohli.

PM Modi Inaugurates New Pamban Bridge, India’s 1st Vertical-Lift Sea Bridge

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the New Pamban Bridge – the country’s first vertical-lift sea bridge – in Tamil Nadu on the occasion of Ram Navami.

PM Modi also flagged off a Coast Guard ship – which passed under the bridge – and the new Rameswaram-Tambaram (Chennai) train. PM Modi, who arrived in Tamil Nadu after a three-day visit to Sri Lanka, also performed a puja at the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram and laid the foundation stone of various rail and road projects worth over Rs 8,300 crore in the state.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the 2.07-kilometer-long bridge, spanning the Palk Strait in Tamil Nadu, stands as a testament to India’s engineering prowess and visionary infrastructure development.

Located in the Ramanathapuram district, the bridge connects Rameswaram Island with Mandapam on the mainland. Built at a cost of over Rs 700 crore by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) – a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways – the bridge features a 72.5-metre navigational span that can be vertically lifted to 17 metres, allowing ships to pass below safely.

The bridge can also support two railway tracks, though it currently operates on a single line. It is cleared for train speeds up to 80 kmph and is built to handle increased rail traffic and heavier loads.

According to a government release, the new bridge has a projected lifespan of 100 years.

It has been constructed with special engineering techniques that reduce the need for frequent maintenance, and uses stainless steel reinforcement, fully welded joints, high-grade protective paint, and a polysiloxane coating to protect against corrosion in the harsh marine environment.

The Pamban Bridge is being compared to famous ones like the Golden Gate Bridge in the USA, Tower Bridge in the UK, and the Oresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden because of its modern design and technology.

The old Pamban Bridge was built in 1914 by British engineers. It used a manually operated Scherzer’s span (a type of rolling lift bridge). The pass over was shut to rail traffic due to safety concerns.

PM Modi witnesses Ram Setu

On the way back from Sri Lanka, PM Modi witnessed the Ram Setu and shared an aerial video.

“On the way back from Sri Lanka a short while ago, was blessed to have a Darshan of the Ram Setu. And, as a divine coincidence, it happened at the same time as the Surya Tilak was taking place in Ayodhya. Blessed to have the Darshan of both. Prabhu Shri Ram is a uniting force for all of us. May His blessings always remain upon us,” he wrote in a post on X.

Ram Setu, also known as the Adams Bridge, is a chain of shoals linking India and Sri Lanka. It stretches 48 km between Rameswaram Island, off the southeast coast of India, connecting the Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. It separates the Gulf of Mannar (south), an inlet of the Indian Ocean, from the Palk Strait (north), an inlet of the Bay of Bengal.

Deesa firecracker explosion tragedy claims another life; toll now 22 | Ahmedabad News

Deesa firecracker explosion tragedy claims another life; toll now 22

AHMEDABAD:”I cannot resist these burns. I feel like dying.” These were the last words of 23-year-old Vijay Kajmi from Harda district, Madhya Pradesh, who died on Saturday, police said.
Kajmi was among the 27 workers who suffered severe burns—21 of whom died—after a massive explosion during firecracker manufacturing on April 1. He was one of the 20 workers initially rescued in the Harda firecracker blast that occurred in February 2024.
Kajmi had been employed by labour contractor Laxmi Nayak, who also died in the blast. A senior police officer in Deesa said, “Kajmi suffered nearly 60% burns and was shifted to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where he breathed his last on Saturday.”
Investigating officer and Deesa DYSP, C.L. Solanki, said his body was sent to his native village after the necessary procedures were completed.
According to the FIR filed by Deesa rural police, the deadly explosion at Deepak Traders was caused by gross negligence by the factory owners—Deepak Mohanani and his father Khoobchand Mohanani—who illegally manufactured firecrackers and allegedly stored around 2,000 kg of explosives.
Speaking to TOI, Solanki said the accused are in police custody and being questioned about the sequence of events leading to the explosion. On sourcing such a large quantity of explosives, he said, “These substances are easily available in the market. But they become dangerous only when there are lapses during the mixing or manufacturing process.”
He added that the explosives were procured from various places, and the investigation into their origins is ongoing. Solanki also noted that there are very few eyewitnesses, but their statements have been recorded and they will be summoned again if required.

Judge Conducting Trial In 2008 Malegaon Blast Case Transferred

Mumbai:

Special NIA court judge AK Lahoti, conducting trial in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, has been posted to Nashik in the annual general transfer of district judges, days before the court was likely to reserve the matter for judgement.

The transfer order, for Lahoti and other judges issued by the registrar general of the Bombay High Court, will come into effect when the courts re-open after summer vacation on June 9.

The order has mentioned that the judicial officers who are under order of transfer are “directed (a) to finish by judgments all cases in which hearing has already been concluded and (b) should endeavour to dispose of all part-heard cases before handing over charge.” In the last hearing on Saturday, judge Lahoti directed the prosecution and defence to wrap up the remaining arguments by April 15 and was expected to reserve the matter for judgement the following day, a defence lawyer said.

Six persons were killed and more than 100 injured when an explosive device strapped on a motorcycle went off on September 29, 2008 near a mosque in Malegaon, a town located about 200 km from Mumbai in north Maharashtra’s Nashik district.

BJP leader Pragya Thakur, Lt Col Prasad Purohit and five others are being tried for their alleged involvement in the case.

The accused are facing prosecution under provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The case was initially probed by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) before being transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2011.

Tostitos chips recalled over undeclared allergen contamination, Frito-Lay warns

Tostitos chips recalled over undeclared allergen contamination, Frito-Lay warns

Frito-Lay issued a voluntary recall of a limited number of Tostitos tortilla chip bags sold across 13 US states, warning that the snack may contain an undeclared milk allergen.
The recall applies specifically to 13-ounce bags of Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips, which may have been accidentally filled with nacho cheese tortilla chips. As a result, the product could contain milk, a potential risk for those with dairy allergies or sensitivities.
According to the company, less than 1,300 bags are affected. The impacted products have a UPC of 28400 52848 and a “guaranteed fresh” date of 20 May 2025, The Independent reported.
The chips were distributed to stores and online retailers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. They were available for purchase starting 7 March.
In a statement, Frito-Lay clarified that the product is safe to consume for individuals without a milk allergy. No allergic reactions have been reported to date, CBS news reported.
The recall does not affect any other Tostitos products, flavours, bag sizes or variety packs.
This marks the second allergen-related recall by Frito-Lay in recent months. Back in November, the company recalled a small batch of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips after discovering the presence of undeclared milk, identified through a customer report. That incident was later classified by the FDA as a Class I recall, indicating a risk of serious health consequences.
Frito-Lay’s announcement follows a string of recent food recalls across the US In the last few weeks alone, Coca-Cola pulled over 10,000 cans after plastic contamination was found, Aldi recalled Happy Farm’s Colby Jack Deli Sliced Cheese due to possible stainless steel fragments, and Target’s Favorite Day New York Style Cheesecake was withdrawn from shelves after undeclared pecans were discovered in mislabelled packaging.

Thousands Of ‘Hands Off’ Protesters Rally Against Donald Trump Across US

Washington, United States:

Tens of thousands of protesters flooded the streets of major US cities on Saturday to oppose the divisive policies of President Donald Trump, in the largest demonstrations since his return to the White House.

Opponents of the Republican president’s policies — from government staffing cuts to trade tariffs and eroding civil liberties — rallied in Washington, New York, Houston, Florida, Colorado and Los Angeles, among other locations.

“I am so angry, I’m so mad, all the time, yes. A bunch of privileged, white alleged rapists are controlling our country. It’s not great,” said New York painter Shaina Kesner, 43, joining a crowd marching through the heart of Manhattan.

In Washington, thousands of demonstrators — many traveling from across the United States — gathered on the National Mall where dozens of speakers rallied opposition to Trump.

“We have about 100 people who have come down by bus and van from New Hampshire to protest against this outrageous administration (that) is causing us to lose our allies across the world, and causing devastation to people here at home,” said Diane Kolifrath, 64, a bike tour guide.

“They’re gutting our government.”

In Los Angeles, a woman dressed as a character from dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” waved a large flag with the message: “Get out of my uterus,” a reference to Trump’s anti-abortion policies.

In Denver, Colorado, one man in a large crowd of protesters held up a placard reading “No king for USA.”

The rallies even extended to some European capitals, where demonstrators voiced opposition to Trump and his aggressive trade policies.

“What’s happening in America is everyone’s problem,” Liz Chamberlin, a dual US-British citizen told AFP at a London rally.

“It’s economic lunacy… He is going to push us into a global recession.”

And in Berlin, 70-year-old retiree Susanne Fest said Trump had created “a constitutional crisis,” adding, “The guy is a lunatic.”

In the US, a loose coalition of left-leaning groups like MoveOn and Women’s March organized “Hands Off” events in more than 1,000 cities and in every congressional district, the groups said.

Anger

Trump has angered many Americans by moving aggressively to downsize the government, unilaterally impose  conservative values and sharply pressure even friendly countries over borders and trade, causing stock markets to tank.

“We’re out here to stop the, honestly, fascism,” protester Dominic Santella told AFP in Boston. “We’re stopping a leader from… jailing his opponents, stopping him from jailing just random people, immigrants.”

Many Democrats are irate that their party, in the minority in both houses of Congress, has seemed so helpless to resist Trump’s moves.

At the National Mall, just blocks from the White House, thousands heard speakers including Representative Jamie Raskin, a Democrat who served as impeachment manager during Trump’s second impeachment.

“No moral person wants an economy-crashing dictator who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing,” he told the crowd.

Activist Graylan Hagler, 71, also addressed the protest, saying: “They’ve woken up a sleeping giant, and they haven’t seen nothing yet.”

“We will not sit down, we will not be quiet, and we will not go away.”

Saturday’s demonstrations were largely peaceful. An upbeat atmosphere prevailed on a mild day in Washington, with protesters ranging from the elderly to young couples with infants in strollers.

A Women’s March shortly after Trump’s first election in 2016 drew an estimated half-million protesters to Washington.

Organizers for the latest Washington rally had predicted a turnout of 20,000 but by Saturday afternoon said the number appeared considerably larger.

As Trump continues upending Washington, his approval rating has fallen to its lowest since taking office, according to recent polling.

But despite global pushback to his sweeping tariffs and bubbling resentment from many Americans, the White House has dismissed the protests.

The Republican president, still popular with his base, shows no sign of relenting.

“My policies will never change,” Trump said Friday.

Waqf Bill: Who’s the ‘girgit’? Lalu, Nitish parties slug it out | India News

Waqf Bill: Who's the 'girgit'? Lalu, Nitish parties slug it out

PATNA: As Bihar prepares for assembly polls in Oct-Nov, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, cleared by both Houses of Parliament, has led to a fierce political storm in the state. The legislation, meant to tighten management of waqf properties, has turned into a flashpoint between NDA and Grand Alliance, triggering a war of words, poster blitz and ideological posturing ahead of the high-stakes electoral battle.
At the heart of the row is JDU’s support for the bill, which has drawn stinging criticism from the opposition, particularly RJD. Defending its stance, JDU claimed it backed the legislation only after JPC accepted all five of its key recommendations. Party spokesperson Anjum Ara listed these as keeping land under the state list, ensuring the law applies prospectively, preserving the status of religious structures on unregistered waqf land, raising the rank of officers resolving disputes, and extending the digitisation deadline.
RJD’s attacks have continued, nonetheless. Calling the bill “unconstitutional”, party functionary Tejashwi Yadav vowed it would be scrapped if Grand Alliance took office. “This bill won’t be implemented at any cost, it will be thrown into the dustbin,” he said.
A poster war has also erupted. RJD kicked it off by likening CM Nitish Kumar to a ‘chameleon’. In retaliation, JDU posters accused RJD chief Lalu Prasad of similar flip-flopping, pointing to his 2010 speech in Lok Sabha demanding strict laws for waqf property, which contrasts with RJD’s opposition to the bill now.
Adding to the fire, governor Arif Mohammed Khan backed the bill, describing it as a necessary reform. “Which waqf board is actually serving the poor – running orphanages or hospitals?” he asked, arguing that waqf assets should be used for public good.
Union minister Chirag Paswan, too, has joined in, accusing the opposition of stoking fear among Muslims.

Michael Lamjathang Haokip, chief of the TSA-GHQ, delivered a keynote on the distinctiveness of the Thadou tribe in Assam with respect to Manipur and other parts of the northeast. The state-level was organised with the aim to promote the distinctiveness of the Thadou tribe, promote traditional cultural heritage and also promote peaceful coexistence with all communities of the state, he said.

The leaders said the Thadou tribe in Assam can help promote peaceful coexistence between different communities in Manipur by reaching out to Thadou in the neighbouring state. The Thadou people are also hopeful that the MLAs of Manipur being the representatives of the people have a huge influence and will earnestly work for restoration of peace.

“It is also pertinent to note that the message of peaceful coexistence needs to be driven through all possible channels. We believe that the people of Assam and the Thadou community having close knit brethren in Manipur, can help spread the message of peace,” Konthoujam Govindas said.

The vote concluded with hope that the festival enriched everyone’s understanding of the Thadou community and that the spirit of unity and peace would carry forward to Hun 2026,” the organisers said in the statement.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

On March 28, with less than a week from the event, Thadou civil society groups and leaders complained to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Assam Police over alleged threats by Kuki militants against celebrating the Hun-Thadou cultural festival.

The Thadou groups requested the MHA and the Assam Police to give “the strongest possible response” to “terror tactics by Kuki militant groups, threats against [festival] organisers, and militants’ plan to punish festival delegates.”

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

“The self-proclaimed Kuki Inpi Assam (KIA) has issued a draconian order demanding the cancellation of the Hun Thadou cultural festival… Their assertion that only the Assam government-recognised Kuki Chavang Kut can be celebrated is absurd and baseless,” the TSA-GHQ had said in a memorandum to the MHA.

In a complaint to the Assam Police seeking a first information report (FIR) to be filed against Kuki militants, Michael Lamjathang Haokip alleged the militants have “openly threatened the people of Assam, including Thadou delegates from Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong, who have confirmed their participation in the Hun 2025 celebrations.”
