India was slapped with a reciprocal tax by the United States on Wednesday, as President Donald Trump raised trade barriers on all goods entering America.

Below are some of the key points:

Tariff rate and comments on India 

A flat 26% tariff was imposed on all goods being exported by India to the United States, amidst reciprocal tariffs in the range of 10%-49% unveiled by Trump for other countries.

The United States imposes a 2.5% tariff on passenger vehicle imports, while India imposes 70%, the White House said in a statement. Apples are allowed to enter US duty free, but India imposes 50% duty on US apples coming in to India, while rice attracts 2.7% in US, in India it is at 80%.

On networking switches and routers, the United States imposes a 0% tariff, but India levies higher rates 10-20%, the statement added.

The US has a trade deficit of $46 billion with India.

Which sector may be hit the most?

Nearly $14 billion worth of electronics products and over $9 billion worth of gems and jewellery are among the top sectors to be hit by the US tariffs. While the 26% tariff will not apply to auto parts and aluminium products, those will still attract the 25% tariff that Trump had announced earlier.

The White House said pharmaceutical products, which comprise nearly $9 billion worth of exports from India as per government data, and energy products are exempt under the latest round of tariffs.

Washington’s previous sector-wide average tariffs on India for automobiles, gems and jewellery, chemicals and pharmaceuticals and electronic products stood at 1.05%, 2.12%, 1.06%, and 0.41%, respectively, as per Global Trade Research Initiative.

What are the tariffs other competing asian nations face?

US has levied a 34% reciprocal tax on China, Japan’s exports to US will attract 24%, Thailand 36%, Bangladesh 37%, Malaysia 24%, Taiwan at 32%, South Korea at 25% and Vietnam will attract 46% – one of the highest.

Comment on non-tariff barriers

The White House statement said India imposes its own uniquely burdensome and/or duplicative testing and certification requirements in sectors such as chemicals, telecom products, and medical devices that make it difficult or costly for American companies to sell their products in India.

“If these barriers were removed, it is estimated that US exports would increase by at least $5.3 billion annually,” it said.

Way ahead for India

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit in February, the two nations agreed to start talks towards clinching an early trade deal and resolving their standoff on tariffs.

Reuters has reported that India is open to cutting tariffs substantially for over $23 billion worth of US goods being sold to India.

With Trump charging a higher tariff on China, sectors where India can gain market share in shipments to US include textiles, apparel and footwear, according to an internal Indian government report reviewed by Reuters.

India sees an opportunity in raising exports of iron and steel products too, where it has manufacturing competence, “especially if tariffs on China are higher,” according to the report.

OpenAI’s recent ChatGPT update has made it simple for users to create illustrations that look like the classic style of Hayao Miyazaki’s movies. The trend has turned everything from scenes in movies to personal family photographs into Ghibli-style visual images. Apart from creating digital sensation, the viral trend has also raised privacy concerns among the internet experts and social media enthusiasts. Experts caution against possible data threats, calling on users to be mindful of how their personal data can be treated when using AI image-generation technology. While having fun, privacy concerns cannot be ignored in this fast-emerging trend. 

Proton, a platform that works on data privacy and security, noted on X, “From the risks of data breaches, once you share personal photos with AI, you lose control over how they are used since those photos are then used to train AI. For instance, they could be used to generate content that may be defaming or used as harassment.”

Think this is a fun trend? Think again.

While some don’t have an issue sharing selfies on social media, the trend of creating a “Ghibli-style” image has seen many people feeding OpenAI photos of themselves and their families.

The platform further warns that “many AI models, particularly those used in image generation, rely on large training datasets. In some cases, photos of you, or with your likeness, might be used without your consent.”

British futurist Elle Farrell-Kingsley also tweeted that uploading pics/thoughts to AI tools risks exposing metadata, location, and even sensitive data – esp for kids. If it’s free, you (& your data) are the price. If you’re fine with that, great, but it’s good to be aware.”

These X handles are not alone; many digital privacy activists have raised concerns over OpenAI’s Ghibli-style AI art generator, claiming it may compromise user privacy by using personal photos to train AI, leading to loss of control over their usage.

Elon Musk showcased significant improvements in Tesla‘s Optimus robot, revealing enhanced walking posture in a recent X (formerly Twitter) update. Attributing the progress to precise actuators, Musk’s post was then humorously followed by Optimus itself “requesting” a cage fight, reminiscent of Musk’s own challenge to Mark Zuckerberg.
“Our latest walk! Straight knees, smoother heel-to-toe gait & arms sway, just chilling around. Entirely trained in simulation with RL,” said Milan Kovac, head of engineering for Tesla’s Optimus, in a post on X.
He highlighted the robot’s improved walking, achieved through reinforcement learning (RL) in simulation, a method that allows robots to learn complex tasks via trial and error in virtual environments. According to videos shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the robot now has better posture while walking as compared to its walk in 2022.
This development aligns with Tesla’s broader goal for Optimus, first unveiled in 2021, to handle repetitive or dangerous tasks, with Musk predicting thousands of units in production by 2025.
“Optimus could take Rock ‘em, Sock ‘em to a whole new level!” Musk replied to Kovac’s post.

Tesla Optimus wants a cage fight with other robots

Musk then got a reply from Tesla Optimus (handle on X) saying, “I think I should be allowed to participate in a cage match against myself … or other robots” – reminiscing Musk’s invitation to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for a cage fight.
Zuckerberg accepted it but the saga went on for weeks after which, the Meta CEO said that Musk was not serious, and he is moving on.
“I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious and it’s time to move on. I offered a real date. Dana White offered to make this a legitimate competition for charity. Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead. If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously,” Zuckerberg posted on Meta’s Threads.

Arunachal Pradesh Tourism has launched a new policy and brand identity to establish itself as a global travel destination. The initiative, announced by Tourism Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona at Shangri-La Eros Hotel in New Delhi, introduces the tagline “Arunachal: Beyond Myths and Mountains.”

“The prime focus of our new tourism policy is to position Arunachal Pradesh as a world-class tourism destination, preserving its pristine landscapes, rich tribal culture, and unique biodiversity while promoting sustainable tourism and community empowerment,” Minister Sona said.

The new logo, featuring turquoise mountains and an orange arc for the rising sun, represents Arunachal Pradesh as the “Land of the Dawn-lit Mountains.”

Tourism Director Manjunath R said the rebranding shows the state’s untouched beauty. “The new identity serves as an invitation to explore an unexplored side of India that is profoundly enriching,” he said.

The policy focuses on experiential tourism with key sectors such as farm tourism, wine tourism, wellness and spiritual tourism, adventure tourism, film tourism, ecotourism, tribal tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, and border tourism.

To support this vision, the government will invest in capacity building and skill development. MLA Mopi Mihu, Advisor to the Minister, said training programs will be introduced in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM) and the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM). “Skill gap assessments will be conducted to align with industry demands, in addition to providing skill training for small businesses and local guides,” he said.

The policy also includes measures to attract investors, with district-level land banks and a dedicated tourism facilitation cell to streamline project approvals. “A dedicated facilitation cell will be established as a one-stop solution for disseminating information to investors and addressing their concerns,” said Tourism Secretary Ranphoa Ngowa.

“Arunachal has so much to offer, so I would like to request each and everyone present to come to experience Arunachal and tell the world how beautiful it is and how much we have to offer for visitors,” Minister Sona said.

Arunachal Pradesh saw a 300 per cent surge in foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, with domestic visitors rising by 368.91 per cent to 1.04 million.
 

The Delhi High Court has directed Customs officials to ensure that old and personal jewellery of travellers, including ornaments being worn by them during travel, are not unnecessarily detained at airports and they are not harassed.

A bench of Justices Prathiba M Singh and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta passed the direction after being informed by the Customs that a detailed stakeholder consultation is being carried out by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and some more time was needed to amend the Baggage Rules.

The court was hearing a batch of more than 30 petitions raising issues on the procedure for detention of goods belonging to the tourists travelling to India, of both Indian and foreign origin, by the Customs department.

“Since the CBIC and the Customs department are now seeking further time to amend the Baggage Rules and to place the same before this court, a sensitisation initiative shall be carried out by the Customs department for all its officials.

“The Customs officials shall ensure that old jewellery of even Indian travellers, personal jewellery which is being worn by the travellers during travel or used jewellery are not unnecessarily detained in a routine manner, so as to ensure that no harassment is caused to the travellers coming to India,” the bench said.

It added that if the Baggage Rules can’t be amended by the next date of hearing, a standard operating procedure (SOP) should be placed on record by May 19, which shall be followed by the Customs department till the time the rules are amended.

In the petitions, the court noticed that various travellers, tourists, and Indian citizens coming back from foreign countries were being intercepted and various items which they were wearing, including jewellery, were being detained.

The court considered the Baggage Rules, 2016, and the Indian Customs Declaration form and the Guide for Travellers prepared by the CBIC and observed that the rules were quite outdated and archaic, considering the increase in the price of gold in the last several years.

It noted that the Baggage Rules date back to 2016, i.e., more than nine years old and considering the present market realities, they need a re-look.

The bench, in its March 27 order, said the SOP should cover all the issues, which have been highlighted by the court.

The court said the CBIC, the Customs department, and the other stakeholders should also consider the manner in which the statements were recorded in standard form from all the passengers.

It said the procedures for appraisal and disposal of the detained items were also required to be simplified and re-looked.

The court also asked the concerned authorities to file an affidavit in terms of these directions and place before the draft SOP before it.

BHOPAL: A wave of fear and confusion has swept through the villages surrounding Kuno National Park in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh as a series of wild attacks has left residents on edge.
What started as the peaceful return of cheetahs to India has now sparked growing suspicion and hostility among locals, who are increasingly blaming these cats for attacks on humans and livestock. However, wildlife officials are adamant that leopards, not cheetahs, are responsible for the attacks.
The latest incident occurred in Durredi village, just a few kilometers from Kuno National Park. On a Tuesday morning, 57-year-old farmer Ummed Adivasi was tending to his wheat field when a wild animal pounced on him, striking him with powerful paws. Initially, Ummed thought it was a cheetah, but authorities later confirmed that it was, in fact, a leopard. The farmer’s wounds were severe, but thanks to quick medical attention, he is expected to recover.
This attack followed another event just two weeks earlier when 9-year-old Avinash Dhakad was mauled by a wild animal in Umrikala village. The boy’s mother, Suraksha, fought off the predator with incredible courage, pulling her son from its jaws before it could cause any fatal damage. While villagers were quick to blame the cheetahs for these incidents, wildlife officials have continued to insist that leopards are the culprits.
Despite the official stance, a sense of fear has spread through the locals. Locals are in a frenzy, unsure whether they are dealing with cheetahs, leopards, or both. Sightings of large cats have become more frequent, and each one seems to trigger another round of panic. Some villagers even claim to have seen cheetahs lurking near their homes, further fuelling suspicions that the big cats might be behind the recent spate of attacks.
Last week villagers took matters into their own hands, attacking a family of cheetahs. The cheetahs-Jwala, a female, and her four cubs-had ventured beyond the boundaries of Kuno National Park in search of food.
As they spotted a herd of calves grazing near the Sheopur-Gwalior railway line, the cheetahs moved in for a hunt. Unfortunately for them, the hunt didn’t go unnoticed. A large crowd of villagers, fearing for their livestock, surrounded the cheetahs.
With sticks and stones in hand, they began pelting the animals, trying to drive them away. In the chaos, Jwala and her cubs abandoned the hunt and fled into the forest to escape the assault.
