What Warren Buffett’s $334 billion cash pile says about his view of the market — and life

What Warren Buffett's $334 billion cash pile says about his view of the market — and life

Warren Buffett isn’t just hoarding cash — he’s sending a message.
As per a Bloomberg report, Berkshire Hathaway is entering 2025 with a record $334 billion in cash, amounting to 29% of its total assets. That kind of war chest is raising eyebrows across Wall Street. But for Buffett, this isn’t panic. It’s discipline.
The 94-year-old investor has seen more cycles than almost anyone alive. His moves are rarely impulsive and often signal something deeper. When Buffett refuses to buy, it usually means he believes things are overpriced — and that better opportunities are coming. His favorite valuation yardstick, the ratio of the stock market’s total value to US GDP, is flashing red.
He’s said it before: “Be fearful when others are greedy.” Right now, he’s acting on that.
But this moment also lines up with a bigger shift in Buffett’s tone. In a memo accompanying his recent $1 billion donation to family foundations, he sounded more reflective than ever. Less about stock picks, more about life choices. At 94, Buffett is thinking about legacy, responsibility, and what truly lasts.

What Warren Buffett’s $334 billion cash pile says about his view of market

One core idea? Live below your means — and let the snowball of compounding do the work. Buffett’s lifelong frugality has allowed him to build up what he calls “units of deferred consumption,” now ready to be deployed when the market cracks open. Cash isn’t just safety to him — it’s potential.
Another takeaway from his letter: don’t get cocky. Buffett attributes much of his success to luck — being born in the US in 1930 as a white male. That humility keeps him grounded when markets roar with overconfidence. Where others rush in, he waits.
And maybe most telling of all: Buffett isn’t trying to create dynasties. His children won’t run Berkshire, and they’ve long known it. He believes wealth should empower, not enable idleness, said an opinion piece in Bloomberg. That principle applies to investing too — hoarding cash isn’t laziness, it’s restraint.
For investors looking to follow the Oracle of Omaha, it’s worth remembering: he’s not timing the top. He’s preparing for the bottom. When the right deal shows up, Buffett will be ready — snowball in hand.

US says ‘golden age’ of US-India ties ahead as Trump’s April 2 tariff deadline looms

US says 'golden age' of US-India ties ahead as Trump's April 2 tariff deadline looms

The TOI correspondent from Washington: Predicting that a “golden age” for ties between US and India is coming up ahead, the Trump administration is giving out an “all is well” signal despite the failure of the two countries to close out a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) hours ahead of the April 2 Trump deadline of reciprocal tariffs.
Just a week into his job, the US Deputy Secretary of State and the country’s second ranking diplomat Christopher Landau reached out to India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri over the weekend to talk trade and other issues even as delegations from the two countries were hashing out details of a BTA to avert the sting of Trump’s universal reciprocal tariffs, with a possible exception or deferment carved out for New Delhi.
Even as a delegation led by Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Brendan Lynch was headed back after four days of intense negotiations where the two sides narrowed gaps but did not close out a deal, Trump, after calling out India as “one of the highest tariffing nations in the world,” said “it’s going to work out very well” with New Delhi, with complimentary remarks about Prime Minister Modi.
Landau brought a similar personal touch, posting warm, fuzzy photos of a family visit to India, saying, “I fully expect this to be a golden age for relations, and will always cherish memories of a family trip there a decade ago. I hope to return soon!”
“India is one of the world’s great civilizations, and an important partner for the US in both the political and commercial spheres—each country has much to offer the other,” Landau said, talking of his phone call with Misri to discuss issues of mutual concern, including “repatriation challenges” — a reference to US efforts to deport thousands of undocumented Indians.
Although Landau did not elaborate on the wrinkles, a state department readout said he thanked Misri for India’s assistance addressing illegal immigration to the U.S and asked New Delhi for continued cooperation on this issue. India has agreed to take back verified illegal immigrants but expressed concern over the strong-arm methods employed on deportation flights while also seeking action against human trafficking cartels that entice prospective immigrants with false promises.
The state department also said Landau and Misri discussed “ongoing efforts” to reduce barriers to achieve a fair and balanced bilateral trade relationship, strengthen collaboration in defense and technology, and boost security and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific region, suggesting the two sides took a whole body approach to ties that PM Modi recommended.
India is understood to have made significant concessions in the talks, agreeing to cut tariffs on more than half of U.S. imports, valued at over $23 billion, including on farm products, medical devices, and industrial goods, while proposing a phased approach to opening up on sensitive items such as wheat, maize, meat, and dairy.
Whether the generic concessions — pending virtual talks over the next few weeks on specific sectors and items — are enough to mollify the mercurial US President to carve out an India exception will be known in the coming 48 hours. In some interviews, Trump has said there will be no exceptions.
The issue with India is complicated by New Delhi’s stodgy refusal to move quickly on some farm products, notably dairy, where India is not only the world’s largest milk producer with a robust domestic industry but also has strict import regulations due to religious considerations — for e.g., requirements that animals not be fed ruminant-derived feed).
While this is a dampener on states like Wisconsin (America’s biggest dairy state which has a key election coming up Tuesday), some of New Delhi’s previous concessions, notably with import of almonds and apples, benefit Democratic governed states (California and Washington) that Republicans have no chance of winning. India subsequently lubricated matters by keeling over on bourbon (from Kentucky, a heavily Republican state), but the US is demanding more good cheer from New Delhi.

Tension At Hyderabad University As Students Protest Bulldozers On Land Next To Campus

Hyderabad:

Tension erupted at the University of Hyderabad yesterday after the police clashed with students protesting against the Telangana government’s plan to redevelop 400 acres of land next to their campus. This has led to a political row with the opposition BRS accusing the police of dragging the protesting students by their hair and thrashing them.

Several students, who alleged bulldozers and earthmovers were brought as part of the redevelopment plan, were detained but they were released later.

The state government, which plans to set up an IT park on the land bordering the varsity campus, reportedly issued a proposal to auction the land. Opposing this, a section of the students raised environmental concerns and staged demonstration.

The government claimed its goal is to promote investment in the state and that the land has nothing to do with the university. The students said they rushed to the land to the site after noticing bulldozers and climbed atop the heavy machines while raising “go back” slogans.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), led by former chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, said dozens of bulldozers were brought to flatten the land under police protection and the students who opposed were beaten with batons and dragged by their hair.

“Girls were crying that their clothes were torn, but they ignored them and took them to the police station. About 200 people were arrested. On Sunday, when the police officers started work to level 400 acres of land belonging to the university, they showed such harshness on the students who tried to stop them,” the opposition party said.

Targeting the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, it said, “This is a market of betrayal and not Mohabbat ki dukaan (shop of love)”.

“The Congress’ “Mohabat ki Dukaan” has now reached the Hyderabad Central University. Rahul Gandhi goes around holding a constitution in hand and preaching while his government is doing exactly the opposite,” the BRS added.

The police, however, said only 53 students were taken into preventive custody for obstructing government officials from doing their work. An official alleged some of them even assaulted the police. Polcie cases will be filed against them, he said.

Condemning the police action, the university’s students’ union claimed they had only staged a peaceful rally in the area. The students have a democratic right to protest, they said, accusing the police of forceful detentions and “manhandling” the students.

‘Aaj Lal, Gerua ek ho gaya’: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee criticises opposition amid tensions over Mothabari violence | Kolkata News

'Aaj Lal, Gerua ek ho gaya': West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee criticises opposition amid tensions over Mothabari violence

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited an Eidgah in Kolkata during Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations on Monday, addressing recent tensions following violence in Mothabari.
She criticised opposition parties and emphasized her government’s commitment to preventing riots while highlighting the unity between majority and minority communities.
Banerjee directly addressed the gathering about her government’s stance on maintaining peace and religious harmony.
“We are ready to sacrifice our lives for all religions…The duty of the majority is to protect the minority, and the duty of the minority is to stay with the majority. We will not let anyone riot. We have only one voice, which is to stop the riots,” she said.
The chief minister took aim at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India (Marxist), suggesting they were working together to create unrest.
“We are secular. Navratri is going on; I extend my best wishes for that as well, but we do not want anyone to create chaos…Common people do not create chaos, but political parties do. Aaj Lal aur Gerua ek ho gaya (Today Red and Saffron are one). Let it be. This is a matter of shame,” Banerjee stated.
Her comments followed recent clashes between two groups in the Mothabari area of West Bengal’s Malda district, which led to 61 arrests and internet suspension in three areas after violence erupted on March 27.
Additional director general (ADG) Law and Order Jawed Shamim provided an update on the situation in Mothabari.
“The situation in Mothabari is completely under control. Till now, 19 cases have been registered, and 61 people have been arrested in this matter…Soon, the situation will be completely normal. Today, there have been no incidents (of violence) in the region,” said Shamim.
The BJP responded to the Mothabari incident by organizing a protest on Friday.
The state government has implemented measures to restore peace in the affected areas, with law enforcement maintaining vigilance to prevent further unrest.

Trump on Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky

Washington:

US President Donald Trump, on Sunday (local time), addressed Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s intentions regarding the rare earth deal with the US and his aspirations for NATO membership.

Trump warned that Zelenskyy could face “big problems” if he attempts to back out of the agreement, suggesting that Zelenskyy’s push to renegotiate the deal is tied to Ukraine’s NATO ambitions, which Trump dismissed outright.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “I think he wants to make a deal. And I think Zelenskyy, by the way, I see he’s trying to back out of the rare earth deal. And if he does that, he’s got some problems. Big, big problems.”

“We made a deal on rare earth, and now he’s saying, well, you know, I want to renegotiate the deal. He wants to be a member of NATO. Well, he was never going to be a member of NATO. He understands that,” Trump elaborated.

“So if he’s looking to renegotiate the deal, he’s got big problems,” he added, emphasising the potential consequences of altering the existing agreement.

According to CNN, the Rare Earth Deal is an agreement between the two nations where the US will be tapping into the rare mineral resources of Ukraine in exchange for USD 350 billion, military equipment and ‘the right to fight on”.

When asked if his relationship with Russian Vladimir Putin was at its lowest point amid the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump said that he doesn’t think so and that they have always “got along well”.

“No, I don’t think so. I don’t think he’s going to go back on his word. You’re talking about Putin. I don’t think he’s going to go back on his word. I’ve known him for a long time. We’ve always gotten along well, despite the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax,” Trump said.

Meanwhile, Trump issued a stern warning to the Russian President giving him two options: to either cooperate on ending the Ukraine war or face additional tariffs on Russian oil, CNN reported.

During a telephone interview with NBC news, Trump stated he’s “pissed off” with Putin’s actions and may impose additional tariffs on Russian oil if Putin doesn’t cooperate in ongoing negotiations to end his war in Ukraine.

“I was very angry – pissed off – when Putin started getting into Zelensky’s credibility, because that’s not going in the right location, you understand?” Trump said in the interview with “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker.

“But new leadership means you’re not going to have a deal for a long time, right?” Trump said.

Trump further warned that a failure to reach a deal could result in significant consequences, including secondary tariffs on Russian oil, as per CNN.

‘He didn’t name Eknath Shinde, but they took it personally’: Asaduddin Owaisi backs Kunal Kamra, slams ‘selective’ law enforcement | Hyderabad News

'He didn’t name Eknath Shinde, yet they took it personally': Asaduddin Owaisi backs Kunal Kamra, slams ‘selective’ law enforcement
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi supported comedian Kunal Kamra amid controversies about remarks on Maharashtra’s Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, calling selective law enforcement the real betrayal

NEW DELHI: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday expressed his support for stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra amid the alleged controversies surrounding his remarks about Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, questioning why his comment was taken on a personal level.
Owaisi further stated that the biggest “gaddar” (traitor) in the country is someone who applies the law selectively.
“Kunal Kamra is a stand-up comedian. He is not a politician. He has no interest in contesting elections. He has not named Eknath Shinde, but Eknath Shinde, his party, and the chief minister of Maharashtra have taken it on a personal level. How can you call him a ‘gaddar’?” Owaisi said, speaking to ANI.
“The biggest traitor in this country is one who forgets the rule of law. The biggest traitor in this country, or ‘gaddar’ in this country, is the one who applies the law selectively,” he added.
Owaisi also took a dig at Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, questioning why he had forgotten an incident in his state where someone had previously spoken rubbish about Prophet Muhammad.
“Why is CM Fadnavis forgetting that in his state, when Eknath Shinde was the chief minister, one person had talked complete rubbish and lies in a very demeaning way about our Prophet Muhammad? That didn’t hurt CM Fadnavis? That didn’t hurt Eknath Shinde’s ego?” Owaisi questioned.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has demanded special protection for Kunal Kamra following the filing of three additional cases against him at the Khar police station over the controversial remarks.
Sanjay Raut said that just like Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut was given protection following her “rift” with Shiv Sena, Kamra should be provided the same.
“I also demand that the Maharashtra Govt should provide special protection to Kunal Kamra. Kangana Ranaut was also provided special force for her security when she had a rift with us,” Raut said during a press conference.

‘May have chosen wrong words, but loves country’: Prashant Kishor on Kunal Kamra joke row | India News

'May have chosen wrong words, but loves country': Prashant Kishor on Kunal Kamra joke row

Jan Suraj Party chief Prashant Kishor has extended support to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who faces intense backlash over his controversial remarks about Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde.
Describing Kamra as a friend, Kishor said that the comedian has no political agenda. “He has no ulterior motive, and those who think he is playing politics are mistaken,” Kishor stated.
He highlighted Kamra’s simple lifestyle in Puducherry, where he practices organic farming alongside his comedy career.
“Kunal Kamra is my friend,” Kishor said, acknowledging that the comedian’s comments had sparked controversy. However, he maintained, “But so far as I know him, he has no ulterior motive. People who think he is playing politics—he would not do anything like that.”

“He has no political rivalry. He is one of those who love their country. Maybe he has chosen his words wrongly. If he has done so, then there should be legal action. But I can say he has respect for the country and its constitution,” he added.
The controversy erupted after Kamra referred to Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) during a performance, leading to multiple police complaints, venue vandalism, and death threats from right-wing groups. Several political figures, including Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, have condemned his remarks. However, the Madras high court recently granted Kamra interim anticipatory bail.
Remaining defiant, Kamra took to X (formerly Twitter) to assert that he won’t be intimidated by mob pressure or “hide under the bed.”
When asked about potential alliances, he reiterated that his party is open to discussions but dismissed speculation about an alliance with Chirag Paswan and said, “Oh brother, anyone in the world should come—Chirag should come, lamp should come, lantern should come in hand—there is no question.” However, he praised Chirag Paswan, calling him a “mature person, a good person, a young leader” who is advocating for development beyond caste politics in Bihar.

Kishor also spoke about the need for a new political alternative, stating, “Some new option should come. Whether that option is Jan Swaraj or not, there can be a debate on this, but people want change.” He acknowledged that Asaduddin Owaisi’s party had positioned itself as an alternative in parts of Bihar in the last election, saying, “It’s a democracy, everyone has the right to contest elections, and Owaisi sahab also has a right.”

4 Chinese Men Try To “Remove” Documents From Bangkok Collapse Site, Detained

Bangkok:

Police in Thailand detained four Chinese nationals on Sunday for unlawfully entering the site of an under-construction building that collapsed after a powerful earthquake in Chatuchak District last week. The police said these men were trying to retrieve documents from the building site.

A Chinese-backed construction firm is being investigated over the collapse of the 30-story under-construction high-rise during Friday’s 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar. The unfinished building crumbled in seconds, sending a cloud of dust and debris into the air and trapping dozens under the rubble.

Police Major General Nopasin Poolswat, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said that four Chinese nationals were apprehended for illegally removing 32 files of documents from the rear of the collapsed State Audit Office (SAO) building, without permission, according to a report by the National Thailand.

After the powerful quake, the Bangkok Governor declared the area of the building collapse a disaster zone, thereby designating it as a restricted area where no one was allowed to enter without authorization. However, the police said that on Saturday, they received information about some individuals removing documents from the site.

Upon investigation, they located one of the Chinese men near the incident site, who claimed he was the project manager for a building construction project.

During the probe, it was confirmed that the apprehended man had a valid work permit and that his company was employed by a joint venture with Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, the contractor for the building under construction.

Police also located three other men and confiscated 32 documents they were carrying, which included various types of paperwork, the National Thailand report said.

The four Chinese individuals told police that they were subcontractors working for a contractor under Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited. They said they entered the area to retrieve the documents that were needed for an insurance claim and were stored in a container that was being used as a temporary office by the company.

After completing the questioning, the police temporarily released the suspects. But, later on Sunday, authorities from the Chatuchak District Office filed a complaint against five Chinese nationals for violating the public announcement by entering the building site and removing blueprints and other documents from the collapsed SAO building.

As a result, the police will proceed with legal action against the four individuals. The fifth individual, their employer, is under investigation, and further actions will follow.

Bangkok Building Collapse

According to news agency AFP, as of Sunday, 17 deaths have been confirmed, with 32 injured and 76 still unaccounted for – most of them construction workers from the site of the collapsed building. Search and rescue teams continue working under intense heat to locate possible survivors.

Despite Bangkok’s skyline being filled with high-rise buildings under construction, no other projects suffered similar destruction. Experts and officials are now questioning the structural integrity of the collapsed building, which belonged to Thailand’s State Audit Office (SAO) and had been under construction for three years at a reported cost of over two billion baht (45 million pounds).

Axar Patel reveals tactical use of Mitchell Starc that powered Delhi Capitals to victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad | Cricket News

Axar Patel reveals tactical use of Mitchell Starc that powered Delhi Capitals to victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad

After Delhi Capitals (DC) secured a dominant seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), captain Axar Patel expressed his delight over Mitchell Starc’s sensational five-wicket haul and provided insights into the franchise’s approach for their upcoming games at their primary home venue, Arun Jaitley Stadium.
With this win, DC registered their second consecutive triumph in IPL 2025, climbing to second place in the points table. Meanwhile, SRH, who had previously put up a stellar performance against Rajasthan Royals (RR), slipped to seventh after their second loss of the season.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Axar emphasised the importance of maintaining focus and executing game plans effectively.
“I have told before that I am going to lead the side in the same manner. You need to be up with your game. You cannot take any game easily, there are 10 good teams playing. We need to focus on our plans and process. Today we were successful in doing so. Plan was to give Starc two overs at the start and two overs at the end, but he was in good rhythm. Hence, I gave him the third over and he was able to pick an important wicket. We have experienced players in the team, they give me suggestions. Sometimes I follow them. Enjoying playing with these players. We are playing at Kotla since many years, we will have similar plans. Need to assess the conditions after going there,” Axar stated.
After opting to bat first, SRH found themselves in early trouble as Starc’s fiery opening spell left them reeling at 37/4. A crucial 77-run partnership between Aniket Verma (74 off 41 balls, including five fours and six sixes) and Heinrich Klaasen (32 off 19 balls, with two fours and two sixes) helped SRH recover.

However, DC’s bowlers continued to dominate, with Kuldeep Yadav (3/22) and Starc (5/35) dismantling the middle and lower order, restricting SRH to 163 in 18.4 overs.
Chasing 164, DC got off to a strong start, courtesy of an 81-run opening stand between Jake Fraser-McGurk (38 off 32 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) and Faf du Plessis (50 off 27 balls, with three fours and three sixes).

Though DC lost a few quick wickets, Abishek Porel (34* off 18 balls, with two fours and two sixes) and Tristan Stubbs (21 off 14 balls, with three fours) ensured a comfortable finish. The duo guided DC home with four overs to spare, sealing a convincing seven-wicket victory.
For his match-winning spell of 5/35, Mitchell Starc was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match,’ further solidifying his impact in DC’s campaign.
