IND vs ENG: Ravi Shastri blames Karun Nair’s ‘huge lapse in concentration’ for Lord’s defeat | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri pointed to two key moments—Rishabh Pant’s dismissal in the first innings and Karun Nair’s wicket in the second—as the major turning points in India’s 22-run defeat to England in the third Test at Lord’s. The result gave England a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, after successfully defending a modest target of 193 by bowling India out for 170.England captain Ben Stokes ran out Pant for 74 with a brilliant piece of fielding just before lunch on Day 3, which Shastri described as a pivotal moment in the contest.

India vs England: India fall short at Lord’s, England lead series 2-1

“The turning point for me in this Test match was, first of all, Rishabh Pant‘s dismissal. Ben Stokes… simply outstanding presence of mind to hit at the right end and pull it off on the stroke of lunch. Because India would have got a lead and they were in the driver’s seat,” Shastri said on The ICC Review. The second crucial moment, according to Shastri, came early in India’s second innings when Karun Nair was dismissed leg-before by Brydon Carse after shouldering arms to a straight delivery, with India at 41 for one. That lapse triggered a batting collapse as India slipped from 42 for two to 82 for seven, handing England control of the game.“Having said that, again at 40/1, I thought that was a huge lapse in concentration from Karun Nair to leave a straight ball, a nothing ball, to leave it and open the door for England. I thought that the timing of that dismissal turned things around,” Shastri commented. He also praised India’s lower order for their resilience on the final day, contrasting it with the top order’s struggles.“Because you saw when Siraj batted, when Bumrah batted, when Jadeja was batting, once the ball was 40 overs old, they hardly put a foot wrong. They were solid in defence and to bring that target down at lunch, 82 to get, you thought in the next 10 minutes it would be done and dusted. But to bring that 82 or 83 to 22 was a massive achievement. So, it just goes to show that the top order had just been a little tougher and mentally stronger on Day 4, towards the end, this game would have been India’s,” he explained.Drawing comparisons with India’s memorable win at Lord’s in 2021, Shastri noted the similarities in match progression.“It reminded me so much of the Test match in 2021. Only on that occasion, it was India who batted first. Scores were very similar, 300, 300 and then a collapse in the second innings. At that time, India won,” Shastri observed.Despite the loss, he remains hopeful of a strong Indian response when the series resumes in Manchester on July 23.“Fifteen days in the series, it’s been riveting stuff. And at times, I think India could have been 3-0 up. A little bit of luck, India could have been 3-0 up,” Shastri remarked. He credited England’s ability to capitalise on crucial moments, while also highlighting Stokes’ role with the ball.“You have to compliment England. When the going got tough, those moments they seized. And when they saw an opening in the door, they just banged their door down. There was hardly anything on that surface, and if you had lost two wickets less the previous day I think India would have chased that down,” he said.“Stokes bowling those spells, I knew something was coming at Edgbaston because he had something back there. He wanted fuel in the tank for Lord’s and he showed it on the last day. Eight overs, nine-over spells. At one stage, 10 overs towards the end to clinch it for England,” Shastri added, referring to Stokes’ 24-over effort that included three critical wickets, among them KL Rahul’s.

IND vs ENG: Throwing, chucking or correct action?: Jasprit Bumrah’s untold story revealed | Cricket News

IND vs ENG: Throwing, chucking or correct action?: Jasprit Bumrah's untold story revealed

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is currently the best fast bowler in the world. He continues to dominate the Test bowling rankings, retaining the top spot with a commanding 50-point lead over South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, another modern-day great.Bumrah is the only Test bowler to have taken more than 200 wickets at an average below 20. He has picked up 217 wickets in 47 Tests at an impressive average of 19.48.

It is not only his action that makes him unique. His childhood coach revealed an interesting story about the Indian fast bowler when he came to his academy for the first time.“When Jasprit first came to the nets, he had this odd action,” Trivedi was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.“The boys were confused. They were asking me, ‘Is he throwing it or is this a correct action?’ They thought he was throwing it. I observed his action closely for three days. It was absolutely fine — there was nothing ‘chuck’ about it.“It’s an odd action, so the boys were confused. But I was also surprised at how much speed he could generate at 16.“His run-up was 10 or 12 yards, but he generated so much speed that the boys were afraid to face him because the ball was bouncing so much. And already, he could bowl a very good yorker.”Trivedi also shared what he told a young Jasprit, which proved to be a turning point in his career.“I said to Jasprit: ‘You should not change your action. That is your weapon. Don’t change anything about it. You can change your line and length, where you aim the ball. But this is your original action — it’s natural. And you never change natural,’” he said.

Indian think tank in a quandary over whether to play Bumrah or not

Jasprit Bumrah has never played a Test match at Old Trafford, but it’s now that India needs him the most.

As the team heads to Manchester, trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, the think tank has a tough task at hand as it needs to decide whether to play Bumrah in what could be a series-deciding fixture or follow the workload protocol and keep him fresh for the final game at The Oval.

Bumrah has featured in two Tests so far. He bowled 43.4 overs in Leeds and claimed a five-fer in the first innings before being rested in Birmingham, where India clinched a convincing victory, riding on the performances of a young pace attack led by Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep.

He returned to Lord’s for the third Test and picked up seven wickets — including a five-wicket haul in the first essay — and bowled 43 overs. While the team management has been particular about ensuring that he doesn’t bowl longer spells at a stretch, it now faces the biggest challenge.

Even though India captain Shubman Gill kept the suspense after the Lord’s Test, saying, “You will get to know soon,” former India fast bowler Irfan Pathan believes that with the series on the line, Bumrah should play in Manchester.

“Every team management wants its best player to feature in every game, but the workload management also depends on the bowler’s fitness — whether he is feeling tired or not, whether there are any other complications. But there is an eight-day gap in between and that should be more than enough for recovery. Since it’s a series-decider, he must play, unless there’s an injury,” Irfan told The Hindu.

According to CricViz data, Bumrah has maintained an average of 1.031 degrees in terms of swing angle so far in the series, just behind Nitish Kumar Reddy (1.621) and Harry Brook (1.037).

However, in crunch situations like these, it’s not just about numbers. As Irfan points out, “a player picking and choosing games is never ideal for any team,” as it often unsettles the unit.

The options, too, are limited for India. While Siraj and Akash took charge of India’s bowling attack in Birmingham, Prasidh Krishna erred in line and length, and conceded 111 runs, with just one wicket. Shardul Thakur too failed to create an impact in the opening Test. And that’s why, Irfan believes there’s no option beyond Bumrah in a must-win game.

“This is the biggest five-match series that you would play abroad in this World Test Championship cycle, and in such a crunch situation, changing too much isn’t ideal — neither for the management nor for the fellow bowlers. In conditions like these, Bumrah’s presence adds a lot of value,” Irfan, who is currently in London, added.

After a short break, the Indian team will train at the Beckenham County ground on Thursday, where Bumrah is expected to have a full session. The team management will ‘observe and assess’ his fitness before taking a call on his availability for the big game.

A video of India cricketer Jitesh Sharma is going viral on social media, where the wicketkeeper-batter can be seen shouting to his Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) mentor Dinesh Karthik, who is doing commentary in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. However, Dinesh Karthik clarified the issue on X (formerly Twitter) and slammed the social media trolls.“These are some issues with social media that a lot of people face,” Karthik wrote on X.“I invited Jitesh to the comm box, he had come, and I came and met him downstairs and took him to the comm box where he met everyone there.

Poll

Should Jitesh Sharma have been more cautious in addressing Dinesh Karthik on social media?

“By the way, this is below the media center, not the entrance to the ground.”For RCB in IPL 2025, Jitesh played key knocks as a finisher, including an unbeaten 85 in a must-win match against Lucknow Super Giants, helping RCB finish in the top two of the points table. He also served as RCB’s captain when Rajat Patidar suffered a finger injury towards the back end of the competition.

The wicketkeeper-batter will represent Baroda in the upcoming 2025/26 domestic season after leaving Vidarbha. Jitesh has played nine T20Is for India. In the last domestic season, Jitesh captained Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and played under Karun Nair’s leadership in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT). A move to Baroda means Jitesh will be able to play both white-ball and red-ball formats, having played only 18 first-class games since making his longer-format debut in the 2015/16 season.

NEW DELHI: England captain Ben Stokes put his body on the line to lead his team to a thrilling 22-run win over India at Lord’s, according to teammate Joe Root. Stokes delivered a remarkable all-round performance, taking five wickets, scoring 77 runs, and effecting a crucial run-out of Rishabh Pant across two innings of relentless effort.Inspired by their skipper, England sealed victory on a dramatic final day to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

‘Pretty cooked’: Ben Stokes after leading England to Epic Lord’s triumph

What stood out most was the physical toll Stokes endured—bowling a total of 44 overs, including demanding spells of 9.2 and 10 overs on Day 5. It was the most the 34-year-old had bowled in more than six years, despite suffering two serious hamstring injuries in the last 12 months.Root, who captained England before Stokes, said he was amazed by the all-rounder’s resilience and recalled how hard it was to stop him from overextending himself.“You can try, but it doesn’t make any difference. I tried for five years,” Root said.“I mentioned it but he doesn’t always listen to me. He didn’t listen to me when I was captain!

Poll

How impressive was Ben Stokes’ performance in the match against India?

“That’s his call now. It was an incredible effort to be able to do that, but that’s just how he’s built, I guess. He’s just desperate to be the man and make things happen.“It’s a great sign for us moving forward, it really is, because that’s back to his best. He’s got that mentality and that desire to win games and we’re lucky to have him as our leader.”During the first innings, England head coach Brendon McCullum even sent a message through bowling consultant Tim Southee asking Stokes to take a break. Root admitted he too feared Stokes might reach a breaking point, but now acknowledges that Stokes knows his body best.“I was just panicking that he wasn’t going to make it through the game after a couple of bad injuries but he clearly trusts his body now,” he said.“He knows what he’s doing and he’s got a good handle on where he’s at physically.”After the match, Stokes spoke about his exhaustion, telling reporters he was looking forward to some well-earned rest.He said, “I could not wait to just lie on my bed for four days and then be raring to go for (next week’s fourth Test at) Manchester.”The fourth Test at Old Trafford begins on July 23.

IND vs ENG: ‘It’s quite simple’ – Ex-England captain has a radical solution to combat slow over-rate | Cricket News

IND vs ENG: 'It’s quite simple' - Ex-England captain has a radical solution to combat slow over-rate
LONDON, ENGLAND – JULY 12: England batsman Zak Crawley and India captain Shubman Gill exchange words after Crawley called for the doctor after being hit on the finger during day three of the Third Test Match between England and India at Lord’s Cricket Ground on July 12, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images)

The time-wasting strategy by India and England in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy has become a biggest talking point. On Wednesday, England were docked two World Test Championship (WTC) points and fined 10 per cent match fees for their slow over-rate after Ben Stokes pleaded guilty to the offence.“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC code of conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the ICC said in statement.Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels there is only one solution to tackle the on-field antick by the cricketers.“I have really never understood why we bowl 90 overs on day five, going as late as we need to get the overs in, but just knock it on the head at 6.30pm (UK time) on the other days,” Vaughan wrote for The Telegraph.

Inside Lord’s: Exclusive Stadium Tour & Must-Do Experiences

“I think if the players knew that we had to bowl 90 overs, regardless of the time it finishes, that would focus their minds. “It was great theatre watching Zak Crawley chew up minutes at Lord’s knowing they were finishing at 6.30, but it wouldn’t have even been on the cards if everyone involved knew they were carrying on regardless of the time. England would have had to front up and face the music.“The players don’t want to be finishing at 7.45pm. They want to be out of the ground and resting up long before then. I think that would help us see fewer unofficial drinks breaks, bathroom stops and the rest. It would be in the umpires’ interests to get it done too.“It would probably mean play does finish a bit later, but I can’t see anyone not wanting that. Broadcasters and punters get more content and value overall.“It’s quite simple: you have to bowl 90 overs in a day regardless of the time.”

England’s thrilling 22-run win over India at Lord’s was followed by a setback, as the ICC docked them two points for a slow over rate. However, former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes the penalty won’t hurt England much as long as they stay focused on winning matches. The ICC announced on Wednesday that England had been fined 10% of their match fee and lost two points in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. Their total dropped from 24 to 22 points, with their percentage falling from 66.67% to 61.11%. As a result, England slipped to third place on the table, with Sri Lanka moving up to second behind Australia.Shastri pointed out how Australia paid the price for a similar mistake in the first WTC cycle. “It hurts as Australia found out in the first cycle of the World Test Championship. They had a slow over rate against India and it cost them the second place and Zealand qualified for that final. So you’ve got to be fully aware about all this. There’ll be certain games where they’ll probably make up for it,” Shastri said in a video posted on ICC’s Instagram handle.

Ollie Pope provides injury update on Ben Stokes and reacts to Shubman Gill’s taunts of being boring

He added that the key for England is to focus on winning games. “But I think more than the over rate, you have to think of winning. If you focus on winning, then come the last six months, you can probably try and adjust, see how you can get those two points back or something of that sort. But you’ve got to win, that’s more important.” “That won’t matter,” said the veteran, but maintained that the only thing England have to be bothered about is to keep winning games.

Poll

Do you think the ICC’s penalty for England will affect their performance in the World Test Championship?

Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan questioned why only England were penalised for slow over rates when both teams were at fault. “How only one team was reprimanded is beyond me,” Vaughan wrote on XIndia and England will face off again in the fourth Test starting July 23 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester.

England secured a narrow 22-run victory over India in a Test match at Lord’s cricket ground but faced penalties for slow over-rate, losing two World Test Championship points and receiving a 10% match fee fine. The match drew large crowds across all five days, though some faced entry issues, including Indian wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma who required assistance from commentator Dinesh Karthik to gain access to the venue. An incident involving Indian cricketer Jitesh Sharma highlighted some organisational challenges at the venue. Sharma encountered difficulties entering Lord’s, requiring verification of his identity at the security checkpoint.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!The situation was documented by a cricket fan with the X (formerly Twitter) username @jadejamayur010, who recorded Sharma’s entry complications. The footage showed Sharma needing to contact Dinesh Karthik, who was serving as a commentator for the series, to resolve the access issue. The video captured Karthik speaking on his phone, presumably with Sharma, and signing autographs for fans before returning inside the stadium.Played over the course of five days, the match delivered competitive cricket. India mounted a strong challenge in their pursuit of 194 runs, though ultimately falling short by 22 runs. The result means England lead the five-match series 2-1, though their World Test Championship campaign has been affected by the over-rate penalties. The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed penalties on England for their slow over-rate. The governing body cited violations of their code of conduct regarding minimum over-rate requirements.“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the ICC stated in their official announcement.

The ICC further elaborated on the point deduction: “In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, two World Test Championship points have been deducted from England’s points total.”The penalties have impacted England’s standing in the World Test Championship. Their points total decreased from 24 to 22 out of a possible 36 points, reducing their percentage from 66.67 to 61.11. This reduction resulted in Sri Lanka moving ahead of England into second place with a 66.67 percentage.
