The Mumbai Indians’ (MI) latest sensation, Ashwani Kumar, made a dream debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL), delivering a match-winning performance against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The young seamer from Jhanjheri, Mohali, was the star with the ball, picking up 4/24 in his three-over spell and playing a crucial role in restricting KKR to 116.

After being named Player of the Match for his stunning debut performance, an emotional Ashwani said, “It is a big thing for me that I got this opportunity and that I am getting this award. Never thought about this, just did my process and happy (to get this award). I am from Jhanjheri in Mohali district – to come from there to here, that is the result of my hard work and by god’s grace, I am here,” as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

Ashwani’s impact was felt early as he claimed his maiden IPL wicket by dismissing KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane for 11. Gaining confidence with each delivery, he then sent back the dangerous Rinku Singh (17). After that, he cleaned up Manish Pandey (19) and all-rounder Andre Russell (5) to complete a stunning spell. Despite his impressive performance, the young pacer admitted to feeling a mix of emotions before stepping onto the field.

“I was confident, but I was a little nervous as well, thinking about what will happen,” he shared. Ashwani also had a special message for his supporters back home, expressing gratitude and determination to continue performing at the highest level.”I want to make all of you feel proud in the upcoming games,” he said. With a debut to remember, Ashwani Kumar has announced himself on the big stage.

Had banana, says Ashwani

“I didn’t have anything for lunch, I just had a banana. There was a little pressure. I wasn’t feeling hungry,” said Kumar.

“But still, I played well, so it’s good.

“(Captain) Hardik Pandya said that since it’s your debut match, enjoy yourself. Just keep bowling the way you have been,” he added.

Pandya said the credit for his bowler’s impressive debut should go to the extensive Mumbai scouting network.

“We thought Ashwani can come in on this pitch and bowl the way he bowled. It is all the scouts – they picked him,” said Pandya.

“They have gone to all the places and picked these young kids. We played a practice game, he had that zip, that late swing, something off the wicket, a different action and he was a leftie.”

In numbers: Chennai Super Kings' dreadful chasing record in IPL continues
Chennai Super Kings suffered their second loss in three matches in IPL 2025. (PTI)

Chennai Super Kings haven’t had the best of starts to IPL 2025. After winning their opener against fellow five-time champions Mumbai Indians, chasing down 156 runs with four-wickets in hand, CSK have been unsuccessful in their chases since.
Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, CSK were unable to scale a lofty 197 run target at home, coming up 50-run short. On Sunday, CSK once again fell short. With 183 to get versus Rajasthan Royals, Ruturaj Gaikwad’s battling knock wasn’t enough to steer them past the finish line, as they lost by 6 runs.

With three matches played, CSK are seventh in the IPL points table with a negative net run rate of -0.771 after collecting just two points.
After just one win in three while chasing, CSK’s challenges when batting second have been highlighted. Chennai have chased 111 times in IPL history and won 69, losing 40 with two matches not producing outright results (one tie, one no result).
That is a win-loss record of 1.725 for CSK when chasing.

If the target gets lofty, 180-plus, as was the case against both RCB and RR, CSK’s record becomes poorer.
CSK have had 20 instances of chasing 180-plus targets where they’ve come out victorious 12 times and come short eight times. It brings their win-loss record at 1.50.
Most startlingly, CSK have now lost nine in a row when they’ve been handed a 175-plus target. The streak began in 2022, with twin losses against Punjab Kings. Then they suffered two more defeats in 2023 – against Rajasthan Royals.
They endured three losses when chasing 175-plus targets in IPL 2024. They came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals.

2023 Rajasthan Royals – 202/5 (20) CSK – 170/6 (20) Jaipur
2023 Rajasthan Royals – 175/5 (20) CSK – 172/6 (20) Chennai
2024 Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 218/5 (20) CSK – 191/7 (20) Bengaluru
2024 Gujarat Titans 231/3 (20) CSK 196/8 Ahmedabad
2024 Delhi Capitals – 191/5 (20) CSK 171/6 (20) Vizag
2025 Rajasthan Royals – 182/9 (20) CSK – 176/6 (20) Guwahati
2025 Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 196/7 (20) CSK – 146/8 (20) Chennai

Now, after just three matches in IPL 2025, they’ve faced two defeats.
The last time CSK had successfully chased a 175-plus target was back in April 2019 when they had edged Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai. That April night, CSK had won by six wickets but with only one ball to spare.

IPL 2025: RCB Beat CSK Again, This Time On Social Media To Script History

Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni after RCB vs CSK clash© BCCI/Sportzpics

Days after their comprehensive victory against the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have beaten their southern rivals again. RCB went past CSK in the list of IPL franchises with the most followers on Instagram to clinch the No. 1 spot. The Bengaluru side has a total of 17.8 million followers, while the Chennai franchise is only marginally behind at 17.7 million. Since the start of the season, RCB have enjoyed much better results in comparison to CSK. The same is now visible on their Instagram account too.

RCB and CSK squared off in the 8th match of the season, where the Rajat Patidar-led side secured a 50-run victory, their first in Chennai since the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008.

Patidar’s fortuitous fifty received excellent support from an unerring set of bowlers as Royal Challengers Bengaluru snapped a 17-year winless streak at Chepauk with a huge 50-run victory over Chennai Super Kings here on Friday. Having fought their way to a competitive 196/7, RCB applied the perfect squeeze on CSK with early strikes and the five-time winners crumbled without any resistance, making 146/8.

The value of the victory could have been gauged from the wide smile on the face of old warhorse Virat Kohli, the only one man in this RCB line-up who was part of that distant 2008 victory.

RCB’s win came courtesy a heady mix of orthodox game of giving it all with the bat and stifling the opposition with regular wickets.

But the Royal Challengers also had to thank CSK’s shocking lack of gumption as the home side never landed a punch in reply.

CSK never recovered from a poor start which saw them losing skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) among three wickets inside the first two overs.

Dhoni struck three fours and two sixes to make 30 not out off 16 balls to go past Suresh Raina as CSK’s highest run-scorer in IPL history, but that was only a minor consolation point.

‘Dhoni can’t bat ten overs…’: Coach Fleming on CSK’s batting order

Mahendra Singh Dhoni can’t bat ten overs running full stick as his knee remains dodgy and the former captain decides on his batting position based on the match situation, revealed Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming.

Also read:IPL 2025 | CSK should rethink its batting approach

The 43-year-old Dhoni had faced criticism for batting at number 9 during CSK’s 50-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Chepauk last week.

On Sunday (March 30, 2025), the CSK talisman walked out at number 7 with the team needing 54 off 25 balls but could manage just 16 runs off 11 balls as they suffered a six-run loss to Rajasthan Royals.

“It’s a time thing. MS judges it. His body, his knees aren’t what they used to be. He’s moving okay but…. He can’t bat 10 overs running full stick. So he will gauge on the day what he can give us,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference.

“If the game’s in the balance like today, he will go a little bit earlier and he backs other players when other opportunities are up. So he’s balancing that. I said it last year, he’s too valuable to us, (with his) leadership and wicket keeping, to throw him in at 9- 10 overs.

“He’s actually never done that. So look, from around 13, 14 overs he’s looking to go, depending on who’s in.” RR racked up 79 for 1 in the powerplay compared to CSK’s 42-1 and Fleming admitted they lost the match in the powerplays.

“If you analyse the game it’s probably the two power plays. Our power play with the ball went for the best part of 80 runs and we were only able to manage early 40s,” he said.

“So that’s on the scoreboard the big difference and we were also sloppy in the field compared to Rajasthan who were outstanding. So that would be the two immediate takeaways.”

Reflecting on the key moments, Fleming said: “I think (Riyan) Parag’s catch was the turning point in the match. The Dube match-up was going our way but he (Wanindu Hasaranga) had courage. You can’t deny that and he certainly gave the ball air.

“Sometimes you give the ball air and in this competition you can go the distance but he had the courage to do that and Gaikwad’s wicket as well was very clever. So he held his nerve and had a good day.

Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad blamed their poor starts and fielding lapses as key reasons behind their six-run defeat to Rajasthan Royals in the IPL on Sunday (March 30, 2025), marking their second consecutive loss.

Nitish Rana’s blistering 36-ball 81, combined with Wanindu Hasaranga’s four-wicket haul, powered Rajasthan Royals to a hard-fought win at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday (March 30, 2025).

Chasing 183, CSK lost Rachin Ravindra for duck while Rahul Tripathi got out after the power play as they finished at 176/6. They had lost their last match at home to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a first in 17 years.

“We haven’t been getting good starts, but once we do, things will be different,” Gaikwad admitted at the post-match presentation. “We also conceded 8-10 extra runs through misfields, and that’s something we need to improve.”

Gaikwad’s valiant 63 anchored the chase, but with wickets falling at regular intervals, CSK couldn’t cross the line.

On batting at No. 3, the CSK captain explained that it was a pre-planned strategy.

“Over the years, Ajinkya batted at three while Rayudu handled the middle overs. We thought it would be better if I came in later to steady things, while Tripathi could attack upfront.

“It was decided at the auction, and I have no problem with it. Anyway, I’m getting to bat early in every game,” he said with a smile.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals’ stand-in skipper Riyan Parag, leading in his hometown, was relieved to end their Guwahati leg with a win.

“We felt we were 20 short. We were going well in the middle overs but lost a couple of quick wickets. However, our bowlers executed our plans well,” Parag said.

“We’ve had two tough games — one where we conceded 280 and another where we couldn’t defend 180. This win was much needed,” he added.

They were brilliant on the field with Parag taking a blinder to dismiss Shivam Dube for 18, while Shimron Hetmyer’s splendid catch ended MS Dhoni’s late blitz for 16.

“Fielding makes up for the 20 runs that we were short. We have been working with Dishant Yagnik, our fielding coach. So it shows,” Parag said.

Djokovic says losing to protege Mensik makes Miami defeat easier to take

Novak Djokovic fell short in his bid to claim a 100th ATP title following a straight sets defeat by Czech teenager Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open final but the Serb said losing to his protege made it a little easier to digest.

Djokovic was looking to join Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as the only three men in the professional era with 100 or more titles, but the 37-year-old crashed 7-6(4) 7-6(4) in humid conditions after several hours of rain delays on Sunday (March 31, 2025).

Despite the disappointment, Djokovic said he was happy that the 19-year-old Mensik was delivering on his potential with his maiden title.

“I’m never really happy to lose, but he’s one of the very few players that I would be happier to lose to, to be honest,” Djokovic told reporters.

“I’ve seen him play when he was 15 or 16 and invited him. We had some training blocks together. He was training at my club in Belgrade (in 2022) and to see his development and evolution is really great, amazing,” he said.

“I could see back then already that he’s going to be one of the top players of the world. I’m super glad that he’s using the potential that he has, because he’s got the complete game,” he added.

Djokovic said that Mensik would only get better after becoming the second youngest Miami champion since Carlos Alcaraz, who won the trophy in 2022 as an 18-year-old.

“His serve is incredible, powerful, precise and he wins a lot of free points with the first serve,” 24-times Grand Slam champion Djokovic added.

“Backhand, as well. Czech school, they always have a great backhand. But forehand, he’s improved a lot. And movement for a tall, big guy like that, he slides and moves well. He still can improve, of course. So I’m sure we’ll be seeing him around,” Djokovic said.

“It’s unfortunate for me. Two tiebreaks, weird match, weird day with the rain delay and all the things that were happening. I didn’t feel my greatest on the court, but it is what it is. Nothing to take away from his victory.”

KKR coach Chandrakant Pandit: ‘Who wouldn’t be happy about home advantage?’ | Cricket News

KKR coach Chandrakant Pandit: ‘Who wouldn’t be happy about home advantage?’

Mumbai: Even as he sought to downplay the ongoing controversy regarding the pitch conditions at Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Chandrakant Pandit acknowledged that every team appreciates any home advantage it gets. He also emphasised that it was only natural for KKR’s head coach and captain, Ajinkya Rahane, to “expect something to be provided” at their home ground.
The pitch debate erupted after KKR captain Rahane expressed a preference for spin-friendly wickets at Eden Gardens. However, the stadium’s curator, Sujan Mukherjee, maintained that franchises have no say in pitch preparation.

Speaking on Sunday ahead of KKR’s third IPL 2025 match against Mumbai Indians, Pandit, while responding to a question about whether home teams should get pitches tailored to their advantage, said, “Who wouldn’t be happy about that?”
Earlier in the press conference, when asked about the issue, Pandit stressed that his focus remained on the upcoming match.
“As a coach and team management, we play on whatever surface is provided to us. The curator is in control. I am not thinking about what should be done or who controls what. Let’s focus on the match,” Pandit said.
However, the discussion also touched upon a broader point: Should franchises influence pitch conditions at their home venues? Since IPL teams lease stadiums and invest significantly, they naturally expect some level of home advantage.
Responding to this, Pandit stated, “That doesn’t necessarily mean they have control over pitch preparation. Of course, as team management, coach, and captain, we do expect something to be provided. That’s all,” he concluded.

“Playing More As A Brand…”: Sanjay Manjrekar’s Huge Statement On MS Dhoni’s No. 9 Stunt

MS Dhoni copped a lot of criticism from fans and experts alike as he came out to bat at No. 9 in Chennai Super Kings (CSK)’s defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025. Chasing a big total, CSK sent out batters like Sam Curran and Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of Dhoni, who is one of the most reputed power-hitters in the game. Former India cricketer and reputed expert Sanjay Manjrekar has given his take on the decision, stating that Dhoni’s presence in the CSK team is becoming more due to his brand and less due to playing qualities.

“I will look at the larger picture. If you look at this year and even last year, Dhoni is playing more as a brand than as a player,” Manjrekar said, speaking on JioStar.

“When they select the playing XI, they don’t pick an extra batter because MS is there. MS Dhoni is a bonus for them. He has a different role,” Manjrekar said.

While Manjrekar acknowledged the incredible brand of Dhoni, he did admit that his abilities are not being utilised properly by CSK by sending him so low down the order.

Manjrekar even stated that Dhoni should become the captain of the franchise so that his utility increases.

“I think if MS Dhoni is playing and batting so late, he should be the captain. He is doing great as a wicketkeeper, but he would contribute more as captain. Right now, he is being under-utilised,” Manjrekar said.

Dhoni slammed 30 runs off 16 balls against RCB despite coming in to bat at No. 9. However, his late arrival meant that those runs held little value and came at a time when the game was already over.

MS Dhoni was retained for just Rs 4 crore by CSK ahead of IPL 2025, with players who haven’t played international cricket for five or more years being allowed to be retained as uncapped.

NEW DELHI: Growing up in the shadows of Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane, young Mumbai batter Suryansh Shedge has carved his own path. Having made his white-ball debut under Iyer and played red-ball cricket under Rahane, the talented all-rounder is now gearing up for a new chapter — one that he hopes will lead him to his idol Virat Kohli.
The swashbuckling Mumbai batter, also a pacer, was picked by Punjab Kings for Rs 30 lakh at the IPL 2025 auction.
Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!
Shedge first caught the spotlight during the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, where he delivered match-winning performances at a blistering strike rate. A key contributor to Mumbai’s title-winning campaign, he scored 131 runs in nine matches at a staggering strike rate of 251.92, smashing 13 sixes. His all-round brilliance also saw him pick up eight wickets.
One of the most iconic moments of the tournament came during the SMAT quarter-final against Vidarbha when India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav bowed down to Shedge after his stunning knock.

IPL | Punjab Kings’ Suryansh Shedge: From playing under Shreyas to dreaming of meeting Kohli

Walking in at No. 6 with 60 runs needed off 24 balls, Shedge smashed an unbeaten 36 off just 12 deliveries (four sixes, one four), powering Mumbai into the semis.
He was at his explosive best in the final as well, rescuing Mumbai with a sensational 36 off 15 balls to clinch the title. His heroics earned him the Player of the Match award in the summit clash.
His consistency and power-hitting in domestic cricket paved way for an IPL contract.
Shedge made his IPL debut against Gujarat Titans, but didn’t get a chance to bat. However, the 22-year-old is keeping his eyes on the bigger picture—meeting Virat and sharing the field with him when Punjab Kings face Royal Challengers Bengaluru on 18 and 20 April.
TimesofIndia.com caught up with Suryansh Shedge to discuss his journey under Iyer and Rahane, his breakthrough domestic season, and his dream of meeting Virat. Excerpts:

How instrumental was Shreyas in helping you secure an IPL contract with Punjab Kings? Having played under him for Mumbai, did you receive a call from him before the auction?
No, I didn’t receive a call from him, so I’m not sure about his role in my selection. But all I can say is that he’s someone I look up to, and playing under him has always been fun. I played two white-ball tournaments under his leadership, and we won the championship in one of them. The way he manages his players, the environment he creates, and the camaraderie we all share — it all comes from the captain himself. A lot of credit goes to him.
In the match against Gujarat Titans, Shreyas was on 97 but still encouraged Shashank Singh to go all out in the last six balls instead of focusing on his century. Can you recall any other instance where Shreyas prioritised the team over personal milestones?
One moment that comes to mind is a Vijay Hazare Trophy game against Hyderabad. We were chasing a relatively low target, and Shreyas usually bats at No. 3 or 4, but he promoted us youngsters ahead of him and came in at No. 8 or 9. That’s just the kind of selfless player he is. It has always been the case, which is why he has been so successful. That mindset—to always put the team first—is something I relate to. We both believe the team comes first, and that’s why we’ve bonded so well. Over the years, he has always put his team above personal milestones, and that attitude is contagious.
As a captain of a franchise, his leadership will influence every player in the squad, and we’ll all gain from it.

Suryansh SMAT

Suryakumar Yadav (R) bows to Suryansh Shedge during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

A picture of Suryakumar Yadav bowing to you after Mumbai’s SMAT victory went viral. Can you share the story behind that moment? What did it mean to you?
That photo means the world to me because I’ve watched it on repeat. When the current Indian T20 captain rates you highly, it boosts your confidence and puts you at ease. With the IPL happening so quickly, everything felt like a whirlwind, but that moment made it even more special. Having shared the dressing room with so many greats, receiving that gesture from him meant a lot to me.
Would you say your batting style resembles Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, or Shreyas Iyer?
I wouldn’t compare my batting approach to any of the current cricketers—I am my own player. Each of them has a unique style, and you can learn a lot by observing them. I’ve picked up things from everyone, but my playing style is my own. Shreyas Bhaiya plays differently, Rohit Bhaiya plays differently, and Surya Bhaiya plays differently. There’s so much to learn, and I try to incorporate those lessons into my intent, practice sessions, and matches. But I’ve never deliberately tried to replicate anyone’s batting style when I’m out there.
Who are the cricketers you admire the most, and why?
I admire Virat Bhaiya a lot, along with Ben Stokes and Shreyas Bhaiya. I know Shreyas personally now—he’s someone you can look up to, both as a player and as a human being. The way he speaks to you and the conversations we have about cricket, even off the field, show how passionate he is. You can feel his enthusiasm, and it’s contagious.
Virat Bhaiya is the chase master—I’ve learned so much from watching him over the years. As for Ben Stokes, I admire his mindset. Whenever the team needs him, he steps up, whether it’s batting, bowling, fielding, or captaincy. He has done everything for his country, and there’s a lot to learn from that. So, these three are the players I truly look up to.
You’ve mentioned your admiration for Hardik Pandya and Ben Stokes. Have you ever had a chance to meet them or have a conversation with Hardik?
I’ve never met Ben Stokes, but I have met Hardik Pandya. He may not remember, but I have! He has a different aura—you can feel it when you’re around him. The number of games he has won for India speaks volumes about his character and how well he has prepared himself for where he is today.
Punjab Kings are yet to face RCB, where you’ll go up against Virat Kohli. You’ve spoken about him before—how do you feel about meeting him on the field? Do you have any plans or specific things you’d like to discuss with him?
If I get the chance to talk to him, I’d ask how he manages to perform at such a high level so consistently. You have to give credit to someone who has given so much to the country. He has done it for years, and whenever the team needs him, he’s there.
I’d love to pick his brain about how he conducts himself, how he prepares, and how he constructs his innings. He opens the innings, stays unbeaten so often, and maintains such a high strike rate—it’s commendable. There’s so much to learn from him. Sharing the field with him will be unreal. I don’t think I’ll believe it at first when I see him standing there, but it had to happen someday, and I’m just blessed that it’s happening this year.

How has playing domestic cricket and sharing the dressing room with senior Mumbai players contributed to your development as a cricketer?
Playing alongside such individuals teaches you a lot. You observe how they live, how they approach their game, and their lifestyles off the field. At this level, the skill gap isn’t huge—it’s the mental aspect that sets players apart. Those who can perform under pressure prevail.
Sharing the dressing room with greats, especially the renowned Mumbai players who have played at the highest level, gives me an advantage when facing challenging situations. I’ve already picked their brains on how they approach different scenarios. I can’t share everything on camera, but I’ve learned a lot.
How valuable has the presence of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in domestic cricket been for young cricketers in terms of experience and development?
It has helped us a lot. When you share the dressing room with or play against certain players, you observe their preparation, pre-match routines, and mindset in different situations.
For example, if I’m in the dugout waiting to bat and Surya Bhaiya is sitting next to me, our conversations help me understand what needs to be done and how to approach the game. These experiences prepare you for the future so that when you’re on your own, you know exactly what to do. It gives you a lot of clarity.
You’ve often credited Abhishek Nair for shaping your career. Now that he’s part of the Indian team’s coaching staff, have you spoken to him about your aspirations of playing for India?
Every cricketer dreams of playing for India. At some point, we’ve all imagined ourselves wearing that jersey whenever we close our eyes.
I’ve been fortunate to work closely with someone who understands what it takes to play at this level. I’ve been with him for nearly three years, and he knows exactly how things work. He’s someone I can follow blindly. No matter how many questions I have, I can always go to him and ask freely.
That transition from junior cricket to senior cricket was tough, but Abhishek sir helped me a lot. I also talk to Manish Bangera sir, my childhood coach, who laid the foundation for my technique. And I’ve had conversations with Monty Desai sir as well. But when it comes to bridging the gap between junior and senior cricket, Abhishek sir’s guidance has been invaluable. His approach to the game is different, and you can feel it when you attend his practice sessions. I genuinely enjoy training under him and learning from him.
Did Abhishek Nair say anything special to you after you made it to the Indian cricket team?
Our conversations are ongoing. Whenever I’m stuck somewhere, I go to him, and whenever he feels I need improvement, he approaches me. He’ll tell me what needs to be done, and I follow it blindly. That’s how our relationship works.

Despite First Win Of IPL 2025, RR Skipper Riyan Parag Faces Big Blow, Fined Heavily Due To…

Rajasthan Royals’ stand-in captain Riyan Parag has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow overrate during his team’s six-run victory over Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League match in Guwahati. RR posted 182/9 and then restricted CSK to 176/6, with Parag leading his team to their first win of the season at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in front of a home crowd on Sunday. “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Parag was fined INR 12 lakhs,” IPL said in a release.

RR, who lost their tournament opener to Sunrisers Hyderabad, will next face Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on April 5.
