Priyansh Arya’s chancy yet audacious 103 (42b, 7×4, 9×6) was the highlight of Punjab Kings’ 18-run win over Chennai Super Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium here on Tuesday (April 8, 2025).

There were plenty of catches grassed in this IPL fixture and at the end of it all, PBKS defended its 219 for six as CSK’s effort stopped at 201 for five.

The first six of the chase came only in the 10th over when Shivam Dube muscled one off Lockie Ferguson.

Conway then got two reprieves in two balls off Marco Jansen with Yuzvendra Chahal and Yash Thakur being the culprits.

Ferguson castled Dube to redeem himself for dropping the left–hander’s catch off Arshdeep Singh.

A lot happened in Ferguson’s 18th over. M.S. Dhoni smoked a six over long-off. Ravindra Jadeja came in to bat after Devon Conway (69, 49b, 6×4, 2×6) was retired out. Dhoni then hit another maximum to make the equation 43 off two overs.

Yash Thakur, after dropping Dhoni off Arshdeep in the 19th over, dismissed the wicketkeeper-batter off the first ball of the 20th and sealed PBKS’ victory.

Earlier, after choosing to bat, the host lost wickets up front at the cost of going big.

Priyansh, though, kept on playing shots. He started with two majestic maximums over the point region off Khaleel Ahmed. In between, he was dropped by the left-arm seamer.

Priyansh found an able ally in Shashank Singh (52 n.o., 36b, 2×4, 3×6) and forged a 71-run partnership.

During this stand, the opener got another life as Mukesh Choudhary touched the boundary cushion after taking the catch off R. Ashwin.

Priyansh then went into overdrive, smoking Matheesha Pathirana for three consecutive sixes. His boundary right after the hat-trick of maximums signalled a 39-ball ton.

The vociferous crowd enjoyed that as Priyansh soaked in what he had just accomplished.

After Noor Ahmad got Priyansh caught at long-on, PBKS’ score read 154 for six in 13.4 overs. Shashank and Marco Jansen (34 n.o., 19b, 2×4, 2×6) took over from where Priyansh left off with an unbroken 65-run stand. Even Shashank rode his luck as he was dropped by Rachin Ravindra in the 17th over.

While CSK’s lapses proved costly, PBKS walked away with the win.

PBKS vs CSK LIVE: Can Punjab Kings return to winning ways?

  • 17:46 (IST)

PBKS vs CSK LIVE: CSK’s poor form

Chennai Super Kings started off with a classic low-scoring win against Mumbai Indians at home, but it has gone pear-shaped since then. One big factor has been that CSK have had to chase in every single match, and they’ve fallen short badly.

In particular, the match against DC saw the CSK batters show very little intent, with Vijay Shankar and Dhoni stuck at the crease.

  • 17:35 (IST)

PBKS vs CSK LIVE: Focus on MS Dhoni

Will MS Dhoni retire? What position will MS Dhoni bat in? These are questions on the lips of CSK and IPL fans for a few weeks now. Dhoni hasn’t been able to deliver with the bat so far this year. Can this be the game when the constant rumours are silenced? Undoubtedly, he’ll be the biggest focus of the night.

  • 17:34 (IST)

PBKS vs CSK LIVE: CSK in dreadful form

Chennai Super Kings are in tragic form. They’ve lost three games in a row, and what’s worse, they’ve not put up much of a fight either. Form of their stalwarts is under serious question, and they need to pick up a win to stop their season from falling apart.

  • 17:32 (IST)

Shardul Thakur bowls five consecutive wides, leaves Rishabh Pant frustrated | Cricket News

Shardul Thakur bowls five consecutive wides, leaves Rishabh Pant frustrated
Shardul Thakur bowls five consecutive wides, leaves Rishabh Pant frustrated (Screengrabs)

NEW DELHI: It was a bizarre and frustrating sequence at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday as Shardul Thakur delivered five consecutive wides in a single ball (the first of the 13th over) during KKR’s steep run chase against Lucknow Super Giants.
The moment left Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant visibly exasperated behind the stumps, even showing his frustration with his decision not to take a review for a wide call as things unraveled before him.
Also See: CSK vs PBKS Live Score, IPL 2025
With KKR needing 90 off 48 balls, Thakur was handed the ball in a crucial phase.
Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!
But instead of applying pressure, he quite literally released it — again and again, far outside the off-stump.
All five attempts were wide yorkers, and all five missed the mark, each sailing past a disinterested Ajinkya Rahane.
The fifth wide was the worst of the lot — outside the tramline that even skipper Pant was left frustrated as he ended up rejecting Thakur’s request for a review.
What added to the irony, however, was that the over ended with a wicket — Rahane, who had anchored the innings with a fluent 61 off 35 balls, mistimed a full toss straight to Nicholas Pooran at deep midwicket.
Thakur, after all the drama, had his man.

Poll

Should Rishabh Pant have taken a review for the wide calls?

While Thakur did eventually get the breakthrough, the damage from the extras couldn’t be ignored.
Against a team that had posted a colossal 238/3 thanks to fireworks from Pooran, Marsh, and Markram, such loose bowling only gave KKR more breathing room during their steep chase.

The Madras International Karting Arena (MIKA) in Sriperumbudur, near here, received the highly coveted CIK-FIA Grade-1 certification, thus placing the facility among the elite karting circuits in the World.

The circuit, measuring 1.17km, is the longest karting track in India with a multiple-track configuration that is suitable for competitive racing as well as corporate and leisure activities.

The licence, dated April 8, is valid for three years and has certified that the track has fulfilled “the conditions and safety standards laid down by the CIK-FIA for the running of kart races held under CIK-FIA rules”.

The track was inspected by Willibald Zöttl, CIK-FIA Technical Inspector for the Circuit and Safety Commissions.

The MIKA circuit will host a three-round Karting Karnival series in April and May.

Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC) vice-president Vicky Chandhok said: “When we first conceptualised MIKA circuit, the target was to develop an international standard track that can host global competitions, besides offering a great platform for racing aspirants.”

IPL 2025: MI Head coach Jayawardene delighted with Bumrah’s return

Irrespective of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise you support and the outcome of the Monday (April 8, 2025) night mania at the Wankhede Stadium, every Indian cricket fan would have been thrilled to witness Jasprit Bumrah marking his return to competitive cricket after three months.

“I just spoke to him after the game, and he looks in good nick. He is disappointed [with the result] as well. He wanted a win when he came back. But other than that, he looks fine. The pace was up, the execution was good,” Mahela Jayawardene, the Mumbai Indians head coach, after MI fell short of a gargantuan target of 222 set by RCB.

With a spell of 4-0-29-0, Bumrah emerged as the most economical bowler at the Wankhede Stadium on a night that saw 430 runs being plundered in 40 overs. He bowled the 4th, 11th, 18th and the 20th overs of the RCB’s innings. Barring a six off his second ball – a pull by Virat Kohli – and another off his penultimate ball by Jitesh Sharma – tonked over long-on – Bumrah did not concede a boundary.

Jayawardene was delighted with Bumrah’s return after he broke down on the second day of the fifth Test in Australia in early January. “We just wanted to ease him into the competition, but he bowled well and he controlled things really well. The more he starts playing, (gets) game time, he’ll get into it,” Jayawardene said.

“The last time he was playing a Test match, all of a sudden he is playing a T20, so we need to understand that. The skills were brilliant but there are areas for us to improve.”

Shreyas Iyer nominated for ICC Men’s Player of the Month

Shreyas Iyer nominated for ICC Men’s Player of the Month

NEW DELHI: Among the international stars vying for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for March 2025, India’s Shreyas Iyer stands tall as the lone Indian nominee.
He is understood to have been rewarded for his calm, composed, and crucial contributions during India’s victorious ICC Champions Trophy campaign.
Iyer was the backbone of India’s middle-order, compiling 172 runs across three high-pressure matches at an average of 57.33.
Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!
While the numbers are solid, it’s the context of those performances that makes his nomination especially significant.
Iyer was India’s top run-getter in the tournament and delivered each time the team found itself in a tough spot.
In the group-stage clash against New Zealand, Iyer’s 79-run knock was a masterclass in patience and timing, stabilising the innings after early setbacks.
Against Australia in the semi-final, he dug in for a gritty 45 on a challenging surface, before playing yet another match-winning hand in the final.
There, he scored a composed 48 as India lifted the trophy with a win over the Kiwis.
What set Iyer apart wasn’t just the runs he scored, but how he absorbed pressure and rebuilt innings when the top-order faltered.
His ability to rotate strike, soak in pressure, and anchor the chase showcased his maturity and value to the Indian lineup.
While Jacob Duffy and Rachin Ravindra earned their nominations through standout performances for New Zealand, Iyer’s consistent impact in crunch games cements his case as a deserving frontrunner.

Travis Head Refuses Selfie With Fan. Video Sparks Debate On Social Media

Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Travis Head has sparked a massive debate on social media after he refused to take a selfie with a fan. In a video going viral on the internet, a fan approached Head for a picture at what appeared to be a supermarket but the cricketer did not agree with their requests. Despite his refusal, the fans continued to follow him but they were not able to take that picture. The video has resulted in a lot of discussion online with some users calling the cricketer out for his ‘attitude’ while some defended him saying that the fans should respect his privacy in public spaces.

Earlier, after Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) crashed to their fourth successive defeat with a seven-wicket loss to Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2025, head coach Daniel Vettori admitted that the side hasn’t done the work of assessing and respecting conditions as a batting order.

At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, SRH’s ultra-approaching batting line-up failed to live up to the expectations and ended up at 152/8 in their 20 overs. In reply, GT, the IPL 2022 champions, took a mere 16.4 overs to chase the total and win by seven wickets.

“I think we know the style is going to work, but we have to respect conditions, and we have to assess really well and that’s probably something we haven’t done. Also, (we) have to respect how well other teams are bowling, putting a lot of planning into our top three and they haven’t been able to execute it at times,” said Vettori.

He also said SRH were looking to get a total in the range of 160-170, but fell 20 runs short of it. “I think they saw that the wicket was really tough and the assessment coming back was 160-170 would be a good score, which is what we anticipated at the start of the day.

“So we knew that those guys if they could get themselves in, build a partnership and then hopefully attack the back end and we were pretty close to that in the end. We needed 20 more runs to put the pressure on and then obviously bowl really well. But I think their (GT’s) understanding of what was required was spot on,” added Vettori.

SRH, currently at the bottom of the points table, will play their next game against Punjab Kings on April 12. Vettori signed off by saying SRH are very well aware of lifting their game in all three disciplines.

“We haven’t been able to click in a game. We look back to last year and our skills were putting big scores on and then sort of holding on for dear life with the ball. But we haven’t been able to put those big scores together through a combination of things.

“The good thing about the IPL is there are quick turnarounds, there’s opportunities to do well and there are individual performances within those games. So I think there’s still some confidence within the batting group, but it’s the collective that needs to stand up now,” he concluded.

“Hope That Continues…”: KKR Coach’s Cheeky Remark On Rishabh Pant’s Poor IPL 2025 Form

Rishabh Pant has struggled for runs and it seems that the Lucknow Super Giants skipper may promote himself in the batting order. Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Ottis Gibson said their bowling unit is ready for any such plans by the opposition. “We actually just had our planning meetings and we know how dangerous he can be. And of course, he hasn’t had any form yet. We hope that that continues this week as well. So we’ve planned for every possibility. If he opens, if he moves position, we’ve planned for all of that.”

Kolkata Knight Riders have discovered a surprise hero Vaibhav Arora in the post Mitchell Starc era, and the team management trusts the pacer so much now that they are not hesitant to pick him ahead of more reputed international names, assistant coach Ottis Gibson said on Monday.

Arora has been a revelation with the new ball, producing a match-winning spell of 3/29 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. His scalps included the prized wickets of Travis Head and Ishan Kishan, which derailed SRH’s chase.

“Yeah, I think he’s (Arora) done very well for us. You know, both him and Harshit (Rana) have done very well for us,” Gibson said at the pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s game against Lucknow Super Giants.

“You look at the fact that in the last game, for instance, that we were able to leave out Spencer Johnson, an international player, to play these two guys and back them because we trust them. We know what they’re doing,” he added.

Johnson, the Australian left-arm pacer, has struggled for rhythm, managing just one wicket from three matches while conceding 10 runs an over.

But Arora and Harshit led the pace attack admirably alongside Andre Russell. The trio combined to take six wickets, eventually bowling out SRH for a paltry 120 and sealing an emphatic 80-run victory.

Arora is now the joint-leading wicket-taker for the franchise with their ace India spinner Varun Chakravarthy — 6 wickets apiece.

The former West Indies pacer credited Arora’s hard work with mentor Dwayne Bravo for his improved performances.

“We know how hard Vaibhav is working with (mentor) DJ (Dwayne) Bravo in terms of strategies, in terms of how he’s going to set up his overs and how he’s going to look to take wickets. That’s working very well and hopefully that will continue to work,” Gibson said.

“But like I said, the fact that we were able to leave out an international (bowler) and trust these two local guys and they went out and performed for us was a really pleasing sight.” Asked whether spin or pace is the bigger strength of the KKR bowling unit, Gibson offered a nuanced response.

“Bowling is the strength. We have no strengths. If we take wickets with a new ball, then we can be very dangerous in the middle-overs, of course, with Varun and Sunil (Narine),” he said.

“And if we don’t take wickets with a new ball, then we’ve still got those guys that we can utilise in the middle-overs. We played Moeen Ali who bowled very well for us in Rajasthan and he didn’t even get to bowl any overs in the last game. We’ve got some more overs into Russell.” Gibson acknowledged that while Russell could be expensive at times, his knack for picking up crucial wickets makes him a valuable asset.

“He might go for runs but he always takes a wicket for us. He’s a partnership-breaker and we use him in that way as an impact sort of bowler. If you like to come on and take a wicket, then we can get him off and get one of our better bowlers back on,” he explained.

Sunil Narine has been struggling for big runs at the pole position but Gibson played down any concern.

“No concern whatsoever. Still early days in the tournament. Of course, we know what he can do. We know what he did last year.”We’re still trying to, as a team, establish some consistency. We know that Sunil Narine, on his day, can take apart any bowling attack and we look forward to that happening.”

Pant’s middling white-ball record not in tune with his talent

As Rishabh Pant began his disconsolate walk back to the dressing room after being dismissed against Mumbai Indians in Lucknow Super Giants’ Indian Premier League (IPL) match, the television cameras panned to Sanjiv Goenka offering a wry smile in the VIP enclosure. The reaction of the LSG honcho whenever Pant loses his wicket has been a matter of recurring interest in this year’s IPL. And it isn’t merely because the franchise shelled out a record ₹27 crore for the star wicketkeeper-batter in the last mega auction.

It also stems from Goenka’s reputation as an obtrusive owner who doesn’t hold back from openly expressing his displeasure to players following a poor performance. It came to the surface last year when visuals of an animated Goenka offering then skipper K.L. Rahul a dressing-down on the field — you didn’t have to be a lip-reading expert to work that out — after a humbling defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad did the rounds on social media. The episode seemed to strain the relationship between Goenka and Rahul, even though some damage limitation was attempted in the very next game with the two exchanging forceful smiles in a post-match interaction in front of the cameras. It was to nobody’s surprise that the franchise subsequently released Rahul and showed no interest in his services during the auction.

How long then before Goenka’s wry smiles turn into visible frustration with Pant? Having occupied the hot seat following Rahul’s exit, the 27-year-old has had a far from auspicious start to his stint with LSG, tallying just 19 runs across four matches including a six-ball blob in his very first outing. It’s perhaps best not to dwell on his numbers in the ongoing season, for an average of 4.75 and a strike rate of 59.38 after the first two weeks of the IPL are egregious anomalies. It can happen to anyone in a format where you are obligated to attack from the outset.

Cold numbers

The southpaw is bound to better his scores, which read 0, 15, 2, 2 right now, as the season progresses. But there is something more fundamental to this discussion than just Pant’s lean stretch at the beginning of this season. It is that his white-ball career as a whole hasn’t risen to the heights that were widely expected. Be it when he has donned the blue of India or during his nine-year association with Delhi Capitals in the IPL before his big-money move to LSG, Pant’s perceived destructiveness as a white-ball player — blessed as he is with ferocious power to muscle the ball down the ground as well as the cheekiness to manufacture shots behind the wicket — hasn’t translated into match-winning performances in reality. Not on enough occasions anyway. Cold numbers bear testimony.

Over 76 T20Is for India, which is a significant sample size, he has scored 1209 runs at an average of 23.25 and a strike rate of 127.26. The subpar average can be excused given Pant’s high-risk nature, but the latter figure, at a time when the best players in the slam-bang version are striking at over 160, indicates that his extravagant strokeplay hasn’t been up to scratch either. As the No. 3 batter in India’s T20 World Cup triumph in the United States and Caribbean last year, Pant did begin the tournament with a couple of vital contributions against Ireland and Pakistan on surfaces inimical to big-hitting. But as the event reached its climax, he slipped back to being the batter who hasn’t fully found his footing in coloured clothing.

In ODI cricket, where opportunities have been fewer, his 31 matches have produced 871 runs at an unremarkable average of 33.5. There was a feeling that Pant may have turned a corner in his white-ball career when he walloped an unbeaten 125 off 113 deliveries to steer India to a successful chase of 260 in an ODI series decider against England in Manchester in July 2022, but a horrific car accident towards the end of that year derailed his progress. He has only featured in four 50-over games since. While he was part of India’s 15-member squad that won the Champions Trophy in Dubai last month, it was a spot on the bench that he had to be content with right through as Rahul, the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter, offered no reason with his performances for the think-tank to look elsewhere.

In the IPL, his overall numbers are decent. But for a player as outrageously gifted as Pant, the expectations are bound to be sky-high. By the yardsticks used to gauge IPL’s A-listers, it is fair to say Pant has underwhelmed. Not since 2018, after all, has he breached the 500-run mark in an edition. Just 20 years old then, he was actually otherworldly during that season, smashing 684 runs at 52.61 while also achieving a strike rate of 173.6. But he hasn’t come close to replicating that grand run thereafter. That he has managed only seven half-centuries in his last 57 IPL matches illustrates the point.

All of this is in marked contrast to his resounding impact in Test cricket. Despite the five-match series in Australia recently not yielding favourable rewards for the intrepid strokemaker — Sunil Gavaskar’s irate response on air (‘Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!’) to one of Pant’s dismissals has predictably turned into content for an ad featuring the two prior to this IPL — he is already arguably India’s most distinguished keeper-batter in Tests. His 2,948 runs after 43 Tests, while averaging 42.11, entail match-defining contributions etched in our collective memory. And these performances have been clocked up across the world: he is the only Indian gloveman with Test centuries in Australia, England and South Africa.

The Sehwag syndrome?

Pant’s middling white-ball career is reminiscent in a sense to what another fearless dasher from Delhi, or Najafgarh to be precise, went through. Predisposed to treating bowlers with utter disdain long before it became the sine qua non of modern-day batting, Virender Sehwag should have blossomed against the white ball as much as he did against the red cherry over his 14-year spell in international cricket. It was only in the latter part of his career, however, that Sehwag truly began to optimise his ability in 50-over cricket. Perhaps the spread-out fields post the initial phase of restrictions in the shorter formats was a factor. In Tests, slip cordons and attacking fields for longer durations often played into his hands, allowing him to pounce on the faintest error and capitalise with a spree of boundaries.

There are certainly more open spaces in the outfield for Pant to exploit while donning the white flannels. But with captains more inclined to setting in-out fields than ever before in Tests, it’s not as if Pant hasn’t shown the smarts to manoeuvre the ball into gaps and pick his moments to brandish his scything willow for fours and sixes in the classical version. It is perhaps a matter of Pant applying these skills in the other formats consistently enough.

In this IPL campaign, there hasn’t been a discernible pattern to his wickets to underline a pressing chink. If there is a facet of his game that can get better nevertheless, it is his off-side play. The deliveries that have accounted for his downfall have ranged from an almost waist-high full toss by Harshal Patel to a rank long hop by Glenn Maxwell. To excessively ponder over these dismissals in a format where, at the cost of repetition, these things tend to happen would be unreasonable. But the fact that it is Pant who is going through this poor phase, rather than someone with an illustrious white-ball record, means that the scrutiny will not go away in a hurry.

The expensive price tag — he is the costliest buy in IPL history — only fuels the pressure. LSG coach Justin Langer was asked about Pant’s form after the team’s victory over MI in the previous game.

“He will be fine,” the Australian reassured. “I have got one job, it’s just to keep him smiling. Because when you come into a new franchise, often you try so hard. There are a lot of expectations. He is the captain of the team. With that often comes pressure. Nobody understands that pressure. There are probably a dozen out of a billion people in this country who understand that pressure. We will keep him smiling and keep him relaxed. We have won 50% of our games and Rishabh hasn’t made many runs yet. Imagine when he does start making runs. I cannot wait to see that.”

Pant will hope that moment arrives against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Tuesday. Goenka and the LSG faithful will flash a gleeful smile for the cameras as and when it happens.
