Apple Appoints Indian-Origin Sabih Khan as New COO; Jeff Williams Shifts Focus to Apple Watch

Apple announced the elevation of Sabih Khan to the company’s Chief Operating Officer on Tuesday. Khan, who currently serves as the Senior Vice President of Operations, will take the new position later this month, as the existing COO, Jeff Williams, transitions from the role. It is understood that Williams will continue to work in an advisory role and take retirement later this year. Khan, on the other hand, is being promoted to the C-suite position after spending three decades at the Cupertino-based tech giant.

Who Is Sabih Khan?

Khan is an Indian-origin individual who was born in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, in 1966, according to an India Today report. He reportedly moved to Singapore when he was in fifth grade and earned his degree in Bachelor of Economics and Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University. Khan is also said to have pursued a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, Apple noted in the announcement post.

Initially, he worked at GE Plastics as an applications development engineer and key account technical leader. Khan joined Apple in 1995 and has been working there ever since. In 2019, he joined the executive team as the Senior Vice President of Operations. Khan has also been in charge of Apple’s global supply chain for the past six years.

His responsibility during this time included planning, procurement, manufacturing, logistics, and product fulfilment functions, and ensure product quality. Khan has also played a key role in Apple’s environment-focused initiatives.

Apple noted that Khan was being elevated to the COO role as part of its long-planned succession. Meanwhile, Williams will oversee the company’s design team and Apple Watch, as well as health initiatives. Later this year, the design team will be transitioned to reporting directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook as Williams takes retirement.

“Sabih is a brilliant strategist who has been one of the central architects of Apple’s supply chain. While overseeing Apple’s supply chain, he has helped pioneer new technologies in advanced manufacturing, overseen the expansion of Apple’s manufacturing footprint in the United States, and helped ensure that Apple can be nimble in response to global challenges. He has advanced our ambitious efforts in environmental sustainability, helping reduce Apple’s carbon footprint by more than 60 percent,” said Cook.

Meta Invests $3.5 Billion in Ray-Ban Maker EssilorLuxottica in AI Glasses Push

Meta Plaforms bought a minority stake in the world’s largest eyewear manufacturer, EssilorLuxottica SA, deepening the US tech giant’s commitment to the fast-growing smart glasses industry, according to people familiar with the matter.

Facebook parent Meta acquired just under three percent of the Ray-Ban maker, a stake worth around EUR 3 billion ($3.5 billion or roughly Rs. 29,998 crore) at market prices, said the people, who asked not to be identified because deliberations are private.

Meta, based in Menlo Park, California, is considering further investment that could build the stake to around five percent over time, the people added, though those plans could change.

Shares of EssilorLuxottica surged the most in three months in Paris. The growing ties with Meta should be seen as a vote of confidence in the eyewear maker and the opportunity in eyeglasses, according to analysts at Bernstein.

“This represents another step in Meta’s commitment to the smart-glasses category,” the analysts said in a research note.

Representatives for Meta and EssilorLuxottica declined to comment.

The two companies have worked together for several years to develop AI-powered smart glasses. Meta currently sells a pair of Ray-Ban glasses, first debuted in 2021, with built-in cameras and an AI assistant that provide image-captioning or real-time stock prices.

Earlier Interest

Last month, Meta launched separate Oakley-branded glasses with EssilorLuxottica. The eyewear maker’s chief executive officer Francesco Milleri said last year that Meta was interested in taking a stake EssilorLuxottica, but that plan hadn’t materialized until now.

The advance of as much as 5.5 percent on Wednesday gave EssilorLuxottica a market value of  EUR 116.5 billion (roughly Rs. 11,68,623 crore). Warby Parker, a competing glasses-maker, rose 4.5 percent in the US on Tuesday after Bloomberg’s report.

The deal aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s commitment to AI, which has become a top priority and major expense for the company. Smart glasses are a key part of that plan.

While Meta has historically had to deliver its apps and services via smartphones created by competitors, glasses offer Meta a chance to build its own hardware and control its own distribution, Zuckerberg has said.

Manufacturing Know-How

The arrangement gives Meta the advantage of having more detailed manufacturing knowledge and global distribution networks, fundamental to turning its smart glasses into mass-market products.

For EssilorLuxottica, the deal provides a deeper presence in the tech world, which would be helpful if Meta’s futuristic investments pay off. Meta is also betting on the idea that people will one day work and play while wearing headsets or glasses.

So-called non-AR smart glasses display information but don’t provide a full alternative-reality experience that would alter users’ perception of the environment. Apple Inc. has also recently pivoted to non-AR smart glasses, the Bernstein analysts said, as full AR is “some years away from being practical.”

The market for smart glasses is expected to grow to $8.26 billion by 2030 from $1.93 billion in 2024, according to GrandView Research.

Other tech players are also dabbling in eyewear, suggesting that smart glasses may become mainstream soon, according to analysts at Jefferies. In a research note, they pointed to Google’s recent decision to team up with France’s Kering Eyewear, and China’s Xiaomi announcing its entry into the market.

“We would not be surprised to see new entrants soon,” they wrote in a note.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered Gets New Free Update That Allows Players to Experience Story Chronologically

Naughty Dog and Sony just can’t let The Last of Us go. After remastering The Last of Us Part 2 last year, the developer has now released a new update for the remaster that reorders the game chronologically, allowing for a more linear narrative experience. Sony announced and rolled out the free update to both PS5 and PC versions of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered Tuesday.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered New Update

The update, dubbed The Last of Us Part II Remastered Chronological Experience, allows players to experience the game in chronological order. The Last of Us Part 2 originally features a non-linear narrative that jumps between Ellie and Abby’s stories told across several days and features crucial flashbacks that add context.

“Through the new Chronological mode, we believe players will gain even deeper insight into Part II’s narrative,” Naughty Dog said in a post on PlayStation Blog Tuesday. “Players will be able to see how Ellie being gifted a guitar flows so neatly into her learning to play, for example, while the journey through Seattle will showcase the fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abby’s crisscrossing journeys. You’ll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more.”

The update will add a chronological mode to the game in addition to the default game mode. The downloadable update is now available on PS5 as Patch 2.1.0 and on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store as Patch 1.5. In addition to the chronological mode, the update also fixes bugs and improves the performance of the game.

Nuaghty Dog is also rolling out new rewards as part of the update, including a new PlayStation trophy for completing the game in chronological mode and two new Uncharted 4 skins for Joel and Tommy in No Return, the game’s roguelike survival mode.

Sony and Naughty Dog have kept returning to The Last of Us franchise since it was adapted into the hit HBO TV series starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in 2023. In April, the developer released The Last of Us Complete Edition that offers The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2 Remastered in a single package on PS5. The Complete Edition of the game launched days before the second season of The Last of Us series started streaming.

Gemini AI Upgraded to Support Google Home’s Broadcast Messages Feature

Gemini is now getting a new capability that will allow Google Home users to broadcast messages using the chatbot. The new feature was previewed last month as part of the new upgrades coming to the Google Home web app. It is now rolling out to users. The new feature also improves the integration between Gemini and the Google Home platform, which was likely planned to facilitate the departure of Google Assistant from Android, planned for later this year.

Gemini Can Now Broadcast Messages via Google Home

In its support pages, Google community manager Anish K. announced the rollout of the new feature. With this, Google Home’s Broadcast feature can be accessed by the Gemini AI. Earlier, it was only accessible via Google Assistant, and let users send voice or text messages from one device to multiple connected Nest speakers or smart displays. It acts like a house-wide intercom system.

Google is now shifting this capability to Gemini, allowing the chatbot to broadcast messages across the Google Home connected displays and speakers. Users can also choose to broadcast the message to a specific device, a room, or the entire house. The feature will not work if the user does not have any connected Nest speakers or Google’s smart displays.

The feature is accessible from the Gemini mobile app on a smartphone or tablet. Users will need to ask the AI to broadcast a message or it can also be a voice note. If Google Home is not connected to the Gemini app, the user will be prompted with a message to toggle on the extension. After that, Gemini will automatically use the platform to broadcast the message.

Users can prompt Gemini to broadcast messages such as “Broadcast I’m on my way home,” “Broadcast to the living room, it’s time for homework,” and “Find a recipe for gazpacho and broadcast it on the kitchen display.”

Notably, Google Home’s feature has some limitations as well. All the speakers and smart displays need to be on the same Wi-Fi network (the smartphone that is being used to broadcast the message is an exception to this). All the devices should be logged into the same Google account or be part of the same Google Family group. Additionally, these broadcasts are one-way, and there is no way to send back-and-forth messages. No third-party speakers or displays work either.

Samsung W26 Foldable Phone Allegedly Spotted on China’s 3C Site; Charging Speed Tipped

Samsung W25 was launched in China last year as the Chinese variant of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. Now, Samsung seems to be gearing up to unveil the W26 as a successor. Ahead of any official announcement, the book-style foldable phone was reportedly spotted on China’s Compulsory Certification (3C) authority, hinting at its charging speeds. The Samsung W26 foldable phone is likely to offer the same charging speed as its predecessor.

Samsung W26 Reportedly Gets 3C Certification in China

According to a report by Xpertpick, a Samsung phone bearing model number SM-W9026 has received 3C certification in China. Since last year’s Samsung W25 carried the model number SM-W9025, the report suggests that the upcoming SM-W9026 will likely launch as the Samsung W26 in the Chinese market.

The screenshot of the listing shows that the upcoming Samsung W26 foldable is compatible with a charger bearing model number EP-TA800 that supports up to 25W wired charging speed.

Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 6, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, and Samsung W25 offer the same 25W wired charging speed. The reported 3C listing suggests satellite connectivity on the device. It also indicates that the phone will not include a charger in the box.

Samsung W25 was unveiled in November last year as a Chinese equivalent of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition that was announced in South Korea in October. The W25 is available in China with a starting price of CNY 15,999 (roughly Rs. 1,90,000) for the base model with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is thinner and lighter than the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6. It was announced with a price tag of KRW 2,789,600 (roughly Rs. 1,70,000) for the single 16GB RAM + 512GB storage configuration.

Like the regular Galaxy Z Fold 6, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy SoC and a 200-megapixel primary rear camera. It has an 8-inch internal screen and a 6.5-inch external display. The foldable measures 10.6mm in thickness in the folded state and weighs 236g.

Notably, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 are expected to be launched later today at Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to pack a 4,400mAh battery with the same 25W wired charging speed.

Redmi 15C Leaked Renders Show Design, Colour Options; Reportedly Spotted on NBTC Site Alongside Poco C85

The Redmi 15C is likely to debut in select global markets soon. Ahead of anything formal, a report has leaked alleged design renders of the handset, suggesting its design and possible colour options. The rumoured Redmi smartphone has also reportedly appeared on several certification sites, indicating an imminent launch. Alongside the Redmi 15C, the Poco C85 has been listed on multiple certification databases as well. Both phones are expected to offer similar, if not identical, features. The Redmi 15C is expected to succeed the Redmi 14C, which was unveiled in August 2024.

Redmi 15C Design Renders Leaked

The Redmi 15C will likely arrive in at least four colour options, according to a NieuweMobiel report. The handset is expected to be offered in Midnight Black, Moonlight Blue, Twilight Orange, and a fourth green colourway. The report added that the phone may support 4GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage.

The design of the Redmi 15C appears markedly different from its predecessor, the Redmi 14C, as seen in the leaked images. Instead of a circular camera module, the purported 15C model features a square camera island with rounded corners. Positioned in the top left corner of the rear panel, the island seems to house two separate circular camera slots arranged vertically, alongside an LED flash unit placed within a smaller circular slot.

Towards the bottom of the rear panel, the Redmi branding is located on the left side. The handset’s flat display appears to have narrow bezels, a slightly thicker chin, and a centrally placed waterdrop notch for the front camera. The volume rocker and power button are located on the right edge, while the SIM card slot is positioned on the left.

Redmi 15C Appears on NBTC Site Alongside Poco C85

According to an Xpertpick report, the Redmi 15C with the model number 25078RA3EA has appeared on Thailand’s NBTC certification site. The Poco C85 with the model number 25078PC3EG was spotted on the same database, according to the report. The similar model numbers suggest that the two purported smartphones are expected to launch with similar features, if not the same.

The NBTC listings for the Redmi 15C and Poco C85 confirm that both are LTE-enabled models and, therefore, not expected to support 5G connectivity. The report also notes that the phones were previously spotted on Europe’s EEC and Singapore’s IMDA certification sites, suggesting an imminent launch in select regions.

The “2507” in the model numbers of the Redmi 15C and Poco C85 may hint at a July launch, but it does not confirm it. The handsets could be officially unveiled later than July, though they are still expected to launch sometime soon and not too late in the year.

An earlier FCC listing of the Redmi 15C suggested that it will likely have a 6.9-inch HD+ LCD screen. It may pack a 6,000mAh battery with 33W charging support. The phone is expected to run on HyperOS 2, based on Android 15, out-of-the-box.
