Best Deals on Headphones During Amazon Sale

Apple’s much-awaited quarterly earnings report failed to soothe investor concerns about its biggest challenges, including escalating tariff costs and a slowdown in China.

The company’s shares declined about 2.8 percent in premarket trading Friday. Apple had released second-quarter results that included worse-than-expected sales in China. The iPhone maker also warned in the Thursday statement that tariffs will increase costs this quarter, a sign that geopolitical tensions are taking a growing toll on the world’s most valuable business. 

Apple expects $900 million (roughly Rs. 7,603 crore) in higher costs from tariffs in the current period, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said during a conference call. Revenue will increase by a percentage in the low- to mid-single digits in the quarter, compared with a five percent average analyst estimate. The company didn’t offer any guidance on the impact of tariffs beyond the current period.

“We will manage the company the way we always have, with thoughtful and deliberate decisions, with a focus on investing for the long term,” Cook said during the call.

Sales from China, meanwhile, fell 2.3 percent to $16 billion (roughly Rs. 1,35,165 crore) in the second quarter, which ended March 29. Analysts had predicted $16.83 billion (roughly Rs. 1,42,164 crore). That shortfall is an ominous sign for what was once a growth market. 

Apple has lost ground to local phone brands, such as Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo, and the government there banned foreign-made technology from some workplaces. Apple’s China-centric production also makes it especially vulnerable to tariffs announced by the Trump administration.

The company is struggling in AI as well, especially in China, where its Apple Intelligence platform isn’t yet available. And the brand is increasingly seen as behind the times by consumers in China, where competitors have rolled out foldable devices.

Apple is preparing to launch its AI services in China in the coming months — relying on partners Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Baidu Inc. — and a foldable iPhone is due next year.

As part of the quarterly report, the company announced plans to increase its share buyback program by $100 billion (roughly Rs. 8,44,670 crore) and boost the quarterly dividend four percent to 26 cents a share. Apple shares had been down 15 percent this year through Thursday’s close.

Overall sales gained five percent to $95.4 billion (roughly Rs. 8,05,821 crore) last quarter, above the $94.6 billion (roughly Rs. 140) average estimate. Apple had projected percentage growth in the low- to mid-single digits. Earnings came in at $1.65 a share in the second quarter, compared with an average estimate of $1.62 (roughly Rs. 135).

Apple sold $46.8 billion (roughly Rs. 3,95,379 crore) worth of iPhones in the period, exceeding estimates of $45.9 billion (roughly Rs. 3,87,804 crore). Still, that’s up less than two percent from $46 billion (roughly Rs. 3,88,355 crore) in the year-earlier quarter and compares with $51.3 billion (roughly Rs. 4,33,391 crore) in the same period two years ago.

The latest flagship iPhones aren’t markedly different than the prior models and mostly offer the same AI features as the iPhone 15 Pro from 2023. That’s given consumers less reason to upgrade.

The company debuted the iPhone 16e during the quarter, replacing its low-end $429 (roughly Rs. 36,240) SE model. That phone’s $599 (roughly Rs. 50,604) price is higher than competitors’ offerings — something that may have deterred some shoppers. Later this year, the company is planning more significant iPhone upgrades, including a skinnier design. Cook praised the company’s homegrown C1 modem chip, which is part of the 16e, saying the new component is the beginning of a “journey.”

The company has been contending with a range of challenges — beyond the looming tariffs. Apple shuffled AI management in recent weeks, and it’s under mounting regulatory pressure in the EU and its home country. On Wednesday, a federal judge demanded that the company open up its App Store to third-party payment options and stop charging commissions on outside purchases.

Services, which includes the App Store and Apple TV+, grew 12 percent to $26.7 billion (roughly Rs. 2,25,568 crore) last quarter — in line with estimates. That business is under threat in a few areas, though. This week’s App Store ruling is poised to hurt the platform’s revenue. And the US government is trying to break up Apple’s lucrative search deal with Alphabet Inc.’s Google. 

The company didn’t provide guidance on future services growth due to “uncertainty.”

The Mac division, which launched new MacBook Air and Mac Studio models during the quarter, generated $7.95 billion (roughly Rs. 67,151 crore) in revenue. That beat estimates of nearly $7.8 billion.

The iPad accounted for sales of $6.4 billion (roughly Rs. 54,051 crore), topping projections of about $6.1 billion (roughly Rs. 51,518 crore). In March, the company rolled out a refreshed low-end iPad as well as iPad Air models with faster M3 processors. It’s planning to introduce a new iPad Pro with an M5 chip as early as the end of this year, Bloomberg News has reported.

The company’s Wearables, Home and Accessories category, which has struggled in recent quarters, generated $7.52 billion (roughly Rs. 63,510 crore) in sales. That missed an average estimate of $8.05 billion (roughly Rs. 67,980 crore).

Tariffs remain one of the biggest question marks. Though Apple is likely to sidestep the 145 percent China levy that the administration originally proposed, new tariffs on electronics are still coming. The turmoil threatens to upend the company’s supply chain and potentially force it to raise prices.

Cook said during the call that he had nothing to announce about possible price increases.

Already, Apple is looking to make more of its US-bound iPhones in India rather than China. That country is now fulfilling half of US demand, Cook said. He said that the majority of production for Apple Watches, AirPods, iPads and Macs sold in the US will be made in Vietnam, which has a lower tariff level than China. 

Highlighting the tariff concern, Apple cited “trade and other international disputes” in the list of risks and uncertainties in its quarterly report. That’s something it typically mentions in its annual filings.

But the Cupertino, California-based company got one boost from the tariff threats in the current quarter: Customers flooded Apple retail stores to buy new iPhones and other products out of fear that price hikes were coming.

Those sales would show up in the June quarter. Cook said the tariffs didn’t create extra demand in the March quarter, and he’s unsure of the precise impact in the current period. 

The Apple CEO sidestepped questions about bringing additional manufacturing to the US. But he touted that the company will use tens of millions of US-made device processors this year.

Cook also defended the company’s AI strategy. He was asked about delays to a new version of the Siri voice assistant and said the company needed more time to work on the features so they meet Apple’s “high-quality bar.” 

“We are making progress,” he said. “And we look forward to getting these features into customers’ hands.”

Apple plans to source more than 19 billion chips from the US this year, part of a global supply chain shift to gradually lessen its reliance on China and elevate India for iPhone production.

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook talked about leaning more heavily on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which is expanding its Arizona operations to half a dozen plants. He also affirmed expectations that Apple will in future make the vast majority of its US-bound iPhones in India — reducing output from China as the Donald Trump administration threatens to slap punitive tariffs on its Asian rival. India was mentioned almost as many times as China on Thursday’s post-earnings conference call, reflecting its rising importance.

Cook however was mum on a series of questions about how potential tariffs on consumer electronics may affect Apple’s business, saying “it’s very difficult to predict beyond June.” Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh said Apple’s commentary on the call assumes that current global tariff rates and policies remain in effect and that the global macroeconomic outlook doesn’t worsen.

“We have a complex supply chain, there’s always risk in the supply chain,” Cook told analysts on the call. “What we learned some time ago was that having everything in one location had too much risk with it and so we have, over time, with certain parts of the supply chain, not the whole thing, but certain parts of it, opened up new sources of supply.”

Beyond India, Trump wants Apple to begin building its devices in the US. But that’s unlikely to happen at scale in the foreseeable future. For now, Cook pledged to ramp up local procurement of chips and other components.

The iPhone maker will obtain tens of millions of advanced processors from a new facility in Arizona operated by TSMC this year, Cook said. That’s started making processors for low-end iPads and Apple Watches, Bloomberg News has reported. Apple and TSMC have both announced US investments amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars in line with the White House’s push to bring advanced manufacturing to the country.

Trump’s administration has imposed tariffs on goods imported from China and threatened additional levies to other nations who don’t negotiate new trade agreements over the coming weeks. Some electronics including iPhones are at present exempt.

The Apple CEO also discussed how the company sources glass for iPhone screens from the US, likely referring to Corning Inc. Earlier this year, Apple said it would invest $500 billion (roughly Rs. 4,225 crore) in the US over the next four years, including by manufacturing AI servers at a plant in Texas.

The Bharat Web3 Association (BWA) has announced a cybersecurity workshop that will be conducted in Bengaluru on May 8. During the upcoming event, the BWA will discuss security challenges related to crypto exchanges and wallets. Representatives from multiple crypto firms like Coinbase and Bitgo have been listed as speakers for this workshop. The BWA is aiming to prepare Indian Web3 firms to deal with the sophisticated hacking and scamming methods used by malicious actors to target the $3 trillion (roughly Rs. 2,52,75,450 crore) industry.

CoinDCX CISO Sridhar Govardhan is one of the speakers scheduled to discuss the lessons that can be learnt from recent breaches that impacted the Web3 space. Other representatives from companies like CoinSwitch and Mudrex are also slated to speak at the workshop, Chenoy told Gadgets 360.

Muralidharan Sundaramurthy, Head of Technology Risk and Security Compliance, APAC, Coinbase and Barath Jawahar, Director of Engineering, BitGo are slated to talk about the risks for Web3 projects around third-party integrations and cloud security.

Marc Krisjanous, a senior committee member from the CryptoCurrency Security Standard (CCSS) will also be joining the discussions virtually. The CCSS is a certification programme that audits Web3 firms on their safety protocols. The certification programme was reportedly founded in 2014 by the CryptoCurrency Certification Consortium (C4).

As part of the upcoming workshop, the BWA plans to highlight critical vulnerabilities that pose a serious threat to the ecosystem’s stability. These are part of ongoing efforts to protect Web3 businesses and the investor community from volatility and scams.

Topics around the safe custody of digital assets, API security, and infrastructure protection have been listed as top priority for the workshop, BWA chairperson Dilip Chenoy told Gadgets 360.

Industry representatives will also discuss cooperative ways to adopt healthy practices to keep their users safe against Web3 crimes.

While the Web3 industry has grown in several cities across India, Bengaluru is touted as the biggest hub in the country. In November 2024, a report by the BWA claimed that Karnataka was home to at least 97 Web3 firms.

A recent survey by Binance said that the crypto players in Asian countries like India, demand advanced security measures. Over half of the respondents to the Asia-focussed Binance survey expressed the desire to participate in platform-organised anti-scam simulations like phishing detection tests.

Following the WazirX hack last year, that led to the loss of over $250 million (roughly Rs. 1,900 crore) in funds, the BWA had released detailed guidelines to promote safe business practices for India’s Web3 service providers in January this year.

As part of its guidelines, the BWA directed its member companies to provide customers with transparent information regarding asset listings, market prices, and trading rules. VASPs have also been instructed to implement measures for detecting activities such as wash trading, insider trading, and pump-and-dump schemes. Additionally, the BWA encourages initiatives to educate investors on safe trading practices.

Asus has refreshed its ROG gaming laptop lineup in India. The new range of gaming-focussed laptops, which were announced during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2025) in January, comprises six models — the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16, ROG Strix Scar 18, ROG Strix G16, ROG Zephyrus G16, ROG Zephyrus G14, and the ROG Flow Z13. The 2-in-1 ROG Flow Z13 has a redesigned vapour chamber and dual second-generation Arc Flow Fans boost airflow to keep thermals in check. It has a 170-degree kickstand and packs a detachable RGB keyboard. The laptop features a dual 2W speaker unit with Dolby Atmos support and Hi-Res certification. It has a 70Wh battery and weighs 1.20 Kg

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 sports a 16-inch 2.5K WQXGA OLED ROG Nebula screen with 240Hz refresh rate, whereas the ROG Zephyrus G14 boasts a 14-inch 3K OLED ROG Nebula display with 120Hz refresh. The former is equipped with Intel Core Ultra 9 285H CPU and Nvidia’s RTX 5080 GPU. The ROG Zephyrus G14 is powered by AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 CPU and Nvidia RTX 5070Ti GPU.

Both models have up to 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 2TB SSD storage. They have a six-speaker system with Smart Amp technology, Dolby Atmos support and Hi-Res certification. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 has a 90Wh battery, and It weighs 1.95kg, while the ROG Zephyrus G14 has a 73Wh battery, and weighs 1.57kg. 

For connectivity, the new Asus ROG Strix Scar 16, ROG Strix Scar 18, ROG Strix G16, ROG Zephyrus G16, ROG Zephyrus G14, and the ROG Flow Z13 have Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. All new models run on Windows 11 Home.

iQOO Neo 10R — the company’s latest midrange gaming handset — was recently launched in India, designed to offer good value for mid-range smartphone buyers. It was equipped with a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC paired with a high-capacity 6,400mAh battery, specifications aimed at the younger gamers. However, as mentioned in our review, it did not seem to be the successor to the iQOO Neo 9 Pro, which is priced higher. It appears that iQOO may have a successor to the Neo 9 Pro on the way. It could be branded as the iQOO Neo 10 and seems to be a rebadged product from iQOO’s China lineup.

iQOO Neo 10 Specfications (Expected)

A listing on Geekbench (via 91Mobiles) has revealed that iQOO might use the recently revealed Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 SoC for the iQOO Neo 10 model. The listing points to a processor with 8 cores, with a prime core ticking at 3.21GHz, and three other cores with a clock speed of 3.1GHz, which basically hints at the recently revealed Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor by Qualcomm.

The benchmark, published on Thursday, also reveals the phone’s model name as the ‘vivo I2405′. This model name previously showed up on another certification website. The device was equipped with 12GB of RAM and was running Android 15. The handset managed a single-core score of 2,093 and a multi-core score of 6,836. For comparison, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 we tested in our review, managed 1,927 and 5,047 points respectively.

We could also be looking at a rebranded version of the iQOO Z10 Turbo Pro, released a few days ago in China. It is the first device to be released with Qualcomm’s latest processor. The phone could also be launched globally as the iQOO Neo 10 Pro Plus.

The iQOO Z10 Turbo Pro has a 6.78-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a 144Hz refresh rate. The device as mentioned above is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 SoC and features up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage. The phone (launched only in China) currently runs OriginOS 5, which is based on Android 15. It has a 50-megapixel primary camera accompanied by a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and a 8-megapixel ultrawide camera as well. A 16-megapixel camera is in charge of selfies. The phone is powered by a 7,000mAh battery with support for 120W wired charging.

Sony Xperia 1 VII is widely believed to be in development as the successor to the Xperia 1 VI. The phone has surfaced on a benchmarking website, which not only hints towards its imminent debut, but also details several of its specifications. It is said to be powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset with 12GB of RAM. It may ship with Android 15. Notably, this development comes following the purported handset’s listing on Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) website.

Sony Xperia 1 VII Geekbench Listing

A handset with the model number “Sony XQ-FS54” has been listed on Geekbench (via GSMArena). It has an octa-core chipset with an ARM v8 architecture featuring two cores clocking speeds of 4.32GHz, six other cores operating at 3.53GHz. This is speculated to be the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, becoming the first Sony smartphone to feature this flagship chipset.

The SoC may be paired with approximately 10.90GB of RAM, which could be rounded off to 12GB. The phone is listed as running Android 15 and has a motherboard with “sun” as the identifier.

Benchmark scores for the purported Sony Xperia 1 VII also give us an idea of what to expect from the handset in terms of the performance upon its launch. In the Geekbench 6.4.0 for Android AArch64 benchmarking test, it registered 2,967 and 9,017 single and multi-core scores, respectively.

Previous reports indicate that the Sony Xperia 1 VII may sport the same 6.5-inch screen as the Xperia 1 VI with chunky bezels at both ends. The back of the handset is expected to feature a triple camera setup with three distinct vertically stacked camera rings. While exact specifications remain unknown, it is suggested to debut with a periscope telephoto sensor. Renders of the purported handset reveal additional cutouts for the autofocus LED flash, and other elements.

Xperia 1 VII could measure 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.5 mm in size. The phone’s right spine may feature the power button, volume rockers, and a dedicated button which may act as the camera shutter. Further, it is also said to be equipped with dual front-firing speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB Type-C port for charging.

More details about the purported handset are expected to surface as its launch nears. Although the company is yet to reveal its official launch timeline, the Xperia 1 VI debuted in May 2024, which points towards the current month being the most likely launch window.

However, after analysing a massive 2017 storm captured by Juno, researchers found that even local storms can punch ammonia deep into the planet, shattering the old assumption. “The top of the atmosphere is actually a pretty poor representation of what the whole planet looks like,” explained study lead author Chris Moeckel from the University of California, Berkeley, told the publication. On April 15, 2025, as per EarthSky, his team’s findings suggest that the atmosphere becomes well-mixed only much deeper down than previously thought.

Ammonia as a Tracer Beneath the Clouds

Jupiter’s thick cloud cover blocks direct observation, and ammonia acts as a critical tracer to understand the hidden activity beneath the clouds. Scientists theorised in 2020 that Jupiter’s powerful storms lift ammonia-rich ice particles to high altitudes, where they combine with water ice to create a mushy, slushy hailstone. These mushballs then grow larger and heavier, cycling up and down in the atmosphere before plunging deep, carrying ammonia and water with them. This process leaves the upper atmosphere depleted, matching observations from Juno.

Confirmation came during Juno’s February 2017 flyby. While passing over a storm zone, the spacecraft detected an unexpected deep signal rich in ammonia and water beneath the storm clouds. Moeckel recalled spotting the discovery while casually running data on his laptop at a dentist’s office, describing the moment he realised the mushball theory must be true.

A Universal Phenomenon Beyond Jupiter

Researchers now believe that Jupiter might not be unique. Gas giants across the universe and even newly forming planets could experience similar mushball processes. “I won’t be surprised if this is happening throughout the universe,” Moeckel told to LiveScience, suggesting that Jupiter’s stormy secrets may echo far beyond our solar system.
