Meta Opens Threads to Advertisers Globally

Meta Platforms said on Wednesday it is expanding advertising on its social network Threads to all eligible advertisers globally, as it looks to generate new revenue streams amid brand uncertainty over tariffs.

Launched in July 2023, the Threads app was positioned as a challenger to Elon Musk-owned X, in a bid to win users from the de facto micro-blogging site amid its chaotic takeover by the billionaire entrepreneur.

Meta, one of the world’s largest social media companies, derives most of its revenue from advertising, which funds its multibillion-dollar investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure as it competes to lead in emerging generative AI technology.

However, the deepening trade war between the US and China poses a threat to ad revenue, as marketers seek stability before committing solid budgets. Despite this, some analysts believe that Google and Meta would be the last to experience ad spending cuts.

MoffettNathanson analysts warned on Tuesday that Meta’s online advertising business is at a risk of taking a $7 billion (roughly Rs. 59,895 crore) hit this year due to escalating trade tensions, as China e-retailers could pull back spending.

Nevertheless, a growing user base on Threads—exceeding 320 million monthly users—and uncertainty surrounding a potential TikTok ban in the US could bolster Meta’s ability to attract advertisers.

The company, which started test launching ads on Threads with select brands in the US and Japan earlier this year, said the ads will be delivered in select markets at launch, before rolling out to additional markets.

Meta is scheduled to report first quarter results on April 30.

Perplexity Voice Assistant for iOS Released With Web Browsing, Multi-App Actions

Perplexity has begun to roll out a new voice assistant for iOS. Powered by the company’s native artificial intelligence (AI) answer engine, the new voice assistant comes with web browsing capability and can access multiple apps to complete tasks. The AI assistant for iPhone devices comes three months after the company rolled out the Perplexity Assistant for Android devices. As per the AI firm, the voice assistant can perform complex tasks such as booking a table at a restaurant, sending emails and calendar invites, and more.

Perplexity’s Voice Assistant for iOS Gets Web Search Feature

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Perplexity announced the release of its voice assistant for iOS. Users who have previously installed the Perplexity app on an iPhone can access the AI assistant by updating the app. The feature is currently available for free, and doesn’t require users to download another application.

Once the Perplexity Assistant rolls out to your phone, you can open the app and tap the waveform icon on the bottom right side of the interface, next to the text field. This opens the AI assistant in a full-screen view, where the assistant is represented as a globe of sparkling particles. You can ask a question, and the chatbot will complete respond, or perform an appropriate action.

It can perform all of Siri’s query-based actions, as well as most of the on-device actions such as turning the flashlight on and off, setting a reminder or alarm, and calling a contact.

Additionally, it can also access some apps on the device to complete certain complicated tasks. For instance, if you ask it to “book a table for two at the Taj Hotel tomorrow at 2:30pm,” Perplexity Assistant will be able to access either the hotel’s reservation page or a compatible third-party website. It would then enter your details and share the page with you, for any final adjustments, before booking the table.

Perplexity says the voice assistant can also send emails and calendar invites, as well as find products to buy online. A point to note here is that the AI assistant does not have agentic capabilities and cannot execute actions autonomously. While it can fill out a form or draft an email, you will have to tap the confirmation button at the end.

The AI-powered search platform has recently been taking measures to increase its adoption. Earlier, it added a bot on X that can respond to user queries when tagged in the reply to a post. According to a report, Perplexity has also struck a deal with Motorola to bring the AI assistant to its upcoming devices.

Sennheiser HD 505 Review: Open-Back Wonder

Sennheiser has launched the HD 505 headphones in India. These are claimed to offer a high-fidelity audio experience with in-house 120 Ohm angled transducers. The headsets flaunt an open-back design and are equipped with a 1.8m cable with a 3.5mm plug and a 6.35mm adapter. In the audiophile community, they are being touted as the spiritual successor to the Sennheiser HD 560S headphones, which the company unveiled a few years back. Do they offer noticeable improvements? Priced at Rs. 27,990, do the latest Sennheiser HD 505 Copper edition headphones deserve your consideration? We shall discuss below.

Sennheiser HD 505 Design and Features: Familiar Furtherance

  • Size – 237x191x96mm
  • Weight – 237g (without wires)
  • Colour – Copper

The Sennheiser HD 505 open-back headphones come with a familiar Sennheiser HD 500 series chassis but with subtle improvements that make these more comfortable than most older models. One of the highlights is the weight of the headsets. At 237g, these are lighter not just than the previous iterations in the lineup, but also most competing devices in the segment. Despite the generic, bulky appearance of most over-ear headphones, they sit almost weightlessly on your head and are comfortable even with continuous, long hours of use.

The copper accents add a premium feel to the look

My childhood doctor, attempting to convince me to wear the newly prescribed glasses all day, told me, “Don’t bother taking them off during sleep, they might also help you dream clearly.” Maybe it was that remark (probably not) or the fact that I just need to see; I cannot go a minute without my glasses since. And since then, most over-ear headphones have been at war with my specs. The battle usually continues till I end up with a headache, with the headsets pressing the stems of the glasses into my face. However, the Sennheiser HD 505 have been a welcome comrade in this unspoken battle.

One parameter that helps with the comfort is the reduced clamp force of the HD 505 compared to the existing Sennheiser headsets, especially the HD 560S. The brand has clearly done something right to strike the optimum balance between a lowered clamp force and a steady enough fit. The headphones do not roll off the head even with considerable movement (read: frantic headbanging to Whole Lotta Love), as long as you adjust the metal sliders adequately.

The headband of the Sennheiser HD 505 comes with faux leather cushioning, which adds to its premium look. The elongated ear cups have a metal mesh grille exterior and are padded inside with thick, synthetic velour cushions, which allow the headset to perch comfortably around the ears. The inside of the ear cups has a more transparent finish than existing models as well. This likely adds to the openness of the audio tuning.

sennheiser hd 505 g360 review inline2 hd505

The synthetic velour ear cup padding is quite thick but comfortable

The headsets come in a predominantly black colourway with copper accents around the ear cups and the edges of the headband. The Sennheiser logo on both ear cups is etched in a copper shade as well. The colour is not too loud, and the metallic finish adds to the high-end appearance of the Sennheiser HD 505.

Sennheiser HD 505 Specifications: Classic Consistency

  • Impedance – 120 Ohm
  • Frequency response range – 12Hz to 38,500Hz

Sennehiser claims to pack 120 Ohm angled in-house transducers, made in the company’s facility in Ireland, into the HD 505 headphones. The latest 500 series headphones are said to offer a wide frequency range of 12Hz to 38.5kHz, which is claimed to provide users with a balanced and rich audio experience. Paired with the open-back design, this helps the headphones provide a more natural, more open sound stage.

Unlike closed-back headphones, the design also allows no noise isolation. Therefore, the sound bleeds out of the headsets and can be heard by neighbouring people aside from the user. You are advised not to use them in a shared or public space unless you are ready to deal with judgments of your playlist or, worse, noise complaints.

sennheiser hd 505 g360 review inline3 HD505

The 3.5mm jack is compatible with most PCs

While the open-backed ear cups do not keep sound leaking out, they also do not keep outside noise from seeping in. Unless you are in a relatively quiet spot, you will have to deal with outside disturbances. However, this is a common issue with open-back headsets, and I point it out not as a flaw but more as a reminder. I guess it is safe to assume that we will mostly use these wired headphones in their native space, that is, indoors, where the environmental disturbance or disturbing the environment will not be of much concern.

They are claimed to offer a sound pressure level (SPL) of 107.9dB and are said to provide total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 0.2 percent. The latter suggests that the headsets offer high-fidelity audio with precise reproduction and minimal distortion. These claims are not unfounded.

Sennheiser HD 505 Performance: Shipshape Sound

  • Cable length – 1.8m
  • Cable Type – 3.5mm jack; 3.5mm to 6.35mm screw on adapter

Before we break down the audio experience of the Sennheiser HD 505 headphones in granular detail, it is safe to say that we get what we expect from Sennheiser sound, with a few exceptions. We are presented with a largely rounded, warmer, well-balanced sound stage. The bass, as well as some high-pitched sounds, can be too bright for comfort for some of us, but this mostly depends on our subjective sensitivities to certain levels. Personally, the bass was at times a little too punchy for my taste, but nothing that a slight volume adjustment could not fix.

sennheiser hd 505 g360 review inline4 HD505

The faux leather cushioning of the headband offers a sleek look

Sennheiser markets the HD 505 for “critical music listening, movies, and gaming,” which makes sense for premium open-backed headphones. The lack of a pressurised chamber behind the dynamic drivers helps offer users a more natural and open sound experience than the closed-back counterparts. The lower registers are clearer, and you get an overall immersive audio exposure. Well, not as immersive as 3D spatial sound arrangements, but as close to real-life arrangements as possible. This is why open-back headsets are popular among mixers or sound engineers. And if you are interested in something similar, or are looking to start exploring premium headphones, these are a good place to start.

The Sennheiser HD 505 are tuned to near perfection. Whether it’s gaming, podcasts, movies, or just good old music playback, there is no avenue where I have had any marked issues with the sound. For instance, I watched Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with these headsets during the review period, and I was not disappointed. Well, that’s not entirely true. But the headphones cannot riddle us why in an expected “buddy cop” Monsterverse film, we only not see the titular titans together on-screen for about 10 minutes towards the tail end. The headsets allowed me to enjoy the soundscape, including Kong’s pained, toothache-related groans and Mothra’s shrill chirps, with crisp clarity.

From Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence track The Ballade of Puppets by Kenji Kawai to Contre-Temps by Flavien Berger and Bonnie Banane, the Sennheiser HD 505 allows us to delve into the intricate layers of each composition and observe the grittier nuances. Agust D, as a rapper, is known to use his breaths to punctuate and rhyme his verses, especially in a song like People from the D-2 mixtape. With these headsets, each draw and release of said breaths in the song was clearer than I had perceived previously. While the low and high notes are well defined, we hit a bit of a snag with the mids. They can sometimes appear to be slightly muddled than other sounds, but it did not dampen my experience much.

sennheiser hd 505 g360 review inline6 HD505

The metal mesh grille covers allow noise to bleed out

Sennheiser HD 505: Verdict

The Sennheiser HD 505 retails in India for Rs. 27,990 and is a safe pick for most audiophiles or studio professionals. They are, however, slightly steeply priced for casual customers. However, if you have the budget and want to explore the niche of high-end headsets, the Sennheiser HD 505 is a good place to start. Keep in mind that with the high-fidelity audio experience, the open-back design will also not offer noise isolation or cancellation. You may run the risk of causing a distraction or being distracted to prompting mild annoyance or being mildly annoyed. I did not have to worry about the same, as I only used them in my personal living space, and my cats did not (read: could not) complain about my music taste.

A closed-back option from Sennheiser, the HD 620S (Review), is also available in the country. They were priced at Rs. 32,990 during launch and offer considerable passive noise isolation support.

Ray-Ban Meta Glasses to Launch in India Soon; Live Translation Feature Rolls Out Widely

Meta Platforms on Wednesday announced that the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses will soon be available for purchase in India among other regions. The smart glasses were first launched in September 2023 and only in the US. Although their availability has since been expanded to include more regions, they haven’t been made available for sale in India, until now. Alongside their expanded availability, the company introduced new styles and features, such as expansion of live translation, and the ability to send and receive direct messages (DMs) and video calls through Instagram.

As per Meta, the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses will soon be launched in India, Mexico, and the UAE. Priced at $299 (roughly Rs. 25,000) for the base frame in the US, the smart glasses, which have been developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, feature a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, open-ear speakers, and microphones. These are said to enable users to capture snapshots, listen to music, and have conversations — all on the go.

However, the company is yet to share details regarding the pricing and the availability of the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses in India.

Ray-Ban Meta glasses is now available in new designs. Customers can choose from new styles for the glasses, such as the Skyler Shiny Chalk Grey with Transitions Sapphire lenses, Skyler Shiny Black with G15 Green lenses, or the Skyler Shiny Black variant with Clear lenses.

The company introduced live translation in December 2024 but it was limited to the US and Canada and only in early access. This feature is now being rolled out widely to include all the markets in which the smart glasses are available. It brings real-time speech translation capabilities between English and either Spanish, French, or Italian languages with a simple “Hey Meta, start live translation” command.

Users can play the translated audio through the open-ear speakers and get a transcription of the conversation. Additionally, language packs can be downloaded which eliminate the need of connecting the glasses to a Wi-Fi network for the live translation feature to work.

Meta is also upgrading Instagram’s integration with a new feature which lets users send and receive DMs, photos, audio calls, and video calls from the app on your glasses. They can simply say, “Hey Meta, send a message to Lisa on Instagram”, and the smart glasses will send a DM on Instagram, the company explains.

It is also expanding the access to music apps beyond the US and Canada. Ray-Ban Meta Glasses users in other regions can play music on the smart glasses through apps like Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music. It allows you to ask queries about the tracks you’re listening to.

Another notable improvement is said to be to the Live AI feature. Introduced in December last year, it grants Meta AI access to Ray-Ban Meta Glasses’ cameras to monitor the video feed in real-time. The company says its chatbot can continuously see the user’s surroundings and answer questions about them. They can invoke Meta AI without the “Hey Meta” command and can even ask follow-up questions. With the update, Meta AI can hold conversations more naturally, with a smooth, natural tone. Live AI is also being made available to more regions in the EU.

New Study Finds Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall Bigger and Nearer Than Thought

Astronomers have revealed that the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall, a massive network of galaxies, might be bigger than they realised. By mapping the cosmos with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)—the brightest explosions in the universe—astronomers found that this structure is even bigger than previously estimated. Surprisingly, portions of it also lie significantly closer to Earth than previously believed, challenging fundamental assumptions about how the universe is structured and evolves.
This cosmic structure was first observed in 2014 — a dense galaxy forming a filament of a supercluster.

A new study now extends the researchers’ previous work, but with a wider GRB sample. Hakkila and Zsolt Bagoly, authors of the study, have refined the measurements. They detected a number of relatively nearby GRBs in their sample. The evidence also shows the Great Wall is larger and wider than previously predicted.

Gamma-Ray Bursts Expose Structure Too Large for Current Models

According to a Space.com report, the GRBs figure prominently in the early discovery and more recent growth of the Hercules–Corona Borealis Great Wall. These explosive outbursts — from either collapsing massive stars or colliding neutron stars — produce powerful jets that can be spotted over cosmological distances. Hakkila told the publication that GRBs act as another bright beacon for identifying galaxies, even those too faint to see directly. Because of their brightness, scientists can follow matter throughout the universe more distinctly than ever.

The Great Wall, over 10 billion light-years long, challenges the cosmological principle of uniform universe appearance. Its massive size indicates gaps in current theories and implies that the universe’s formation time was insufficient for such massive structures.

THESEUS May Reveal Full Scale of Cosmic Great Wall

NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Burst observations reveal 542 GRB events, but more data is needed to fully understand the Great Wall’s scope due to misidentified origins and sparse sampling. Hakkila points toward the upcoming ESA mission THESEUS — the Transient High Energy Sources and Early Universe Surveyor — as the next major leap.

The mission aims to dramatically expand the catalogue of known GRBs, particularly at extreme distances. “It could finally provide the observational leverage needed to map the Hercules–Corona Borealis Great Wall to its full extent,” Hakkila told Space.com, emphasising its role in refining our understanding of the universe’s large-scale structure.

Ancient Greenland Rocks Found in Iceland Sheds Light on Late Antique Ice Age

A study published in April 2025 provides new insight into one of the mysterious historical climate change periods known as LALIA (the Late Antique Ice Age). This period is known to last from 536 to 660 AD. The trio of scientists, namely, Christopher Spencer, Ross Mitchell and Thomas Gernon, published in a journal describing the analysis of misplaced Greenland rocks found lodged in the cliffs of Iceland, offering direct evidence of iceberg activity connected to this period of an ice age.

Discovery of the LALIA

The study was published in the journal Geology. As per Phys.org, the earlier research has depicted that the Earth’s northern hemisphere had undergone a chilly spell beginning around 540 AD because of the eruption of huge volcanoes, which led to the rise in debris in the atmosphere, leading to the darkening of the skies. A few historians speculated that the sudden cold weather led the Goths to attack the Romans in Europe, as they moved toward the south, warmer regions led to the fall of the Roman Empire.

Understanding the Misplaced Rocks

The researchers studied some cliffs on the western coast when they noticed that the rocks actually looked out of place. They collected a few rocks to study in the lab. The team crushed the rocks in the lab to study their remnants under a microscope. They pulled the zircon crystals from the centre of these rocks.

In their lab, the team crushed the rocks and looked at their remnants under a microscope, allowing them to pull out zircon crystals from their centres. These crystals can be used as a time capsule. After studying their age and composition, the scientists could trace the original place of these rocks across Greenland. This predicts that these rocks were moved by someone more than 1500 years ago.

The scientists studied the rocks’ age placed at the LALIA, depicting that the rocks were moved after breaking the ice from the large glaciers of Greenland that formed as per the colder scenarios formed during that period.

Scope of the Study

The research stands as a major step forward in understanding the Earth’s climate in the past. These rocks have given clear proof of increased glacial activity at the time of LALIA, indicating the outcomes of modern and future climatic changes.

SpaceX Sends Europe’s First Reentry Capsule into Orbit on Bandwagon-3 Rideshare Mission

A Falcon 9 rocket soared into space from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on April 21 at 8:48 p.m. EDT (0048 GMT, April 22), carrying multiple payloads on SpaceX’s latest rideshare mission, Bandwagon-3. Among the diverse cargo onboard was Phoenix 1, a European-built reentry capsule developed by the German company Atmos Space Cargo. History will be made here in European aerospace with this launch, as Phoenix 1 becomes the first capsule from Europe intending to return from space and splash down on Earth after just one orbit, barely 1,200 miles offshore of Brazil.

Phoenix 1 Debuts as Europe’s First Private Reentry Capsule on SpaceX Bandwagon-3 Flight

According to Atmos Space Cargo, this mission is the first-ever atmospheric reentry attempt of a European private entity. Phoenix 1 is meant to test out essential technologies, including the company’s inflatable heat shield needed to return high-value cargo from space safely, the company noted. “Our mission is to revolutionise space logistics by enabling groundbreaking advancements in microgravity research, in-orbit manufacturing, defence applications, and life sciences,” says the firm’s website. The successful reentry and splashdown will support future commercial applications across these sectors.

Phoenix 1 shared the ride with several other payloads, including 425Sat-3, operated by South Korea’s Agency for Defence Development, and Tomorrow-S7, a weather satellite from the meteorological technology company Tomorrow Companies Inc. These collaborative launches are part of SpaceX’s growing commitment to enabling diverse and cost-effective access to low Earth orbits via its ridesharing programs. The Bandwagon missions, which began in April 2024 and continued with a second flight in December that year, operate alongside the long-established Transporter series, which has completed 13 missions since 2021.

Phoenix 1 Marks Shift Toward Scalable Reentry Missions in European Space Logistics

While the Transporter program is known for launching a large number of satellites—including a record-breaking 143 on a single flight in January 2021—the Bandwagon series focuses on smaller, more flexible ridesharing configurations. The dispatch of Phoenix 1 on Bandwagon 3 is the latest sign of a trend toward greater mission flexibility to develop and operate bespoke space technologies in support of different kinds of space exploration and logistics, and yet another indication of commercial innovation extending the boundaries of the possible in space.

A successful test flight of Phoenix 1 would have significant ramifications for European space companies, being positioned as proof of the Phoenix program—demonstrating mission-critical capabilities regarding return flights and retrofitting, while being the seed for a scalable reaping capability for research institutions and commercial entities.
