HTech’s Madhav Sheth Joins Nxtcell to Lead Launch of Alcatel Smartphones in India; Teases New Honor Products

HTech CEO Madhav Sheth has revealed that he has joined Nxtcell to lead the launch of Alcatel smartphones in India. This move comes shortly after Alcatel announced its plans to make a comeback in the Indian smartphone market. The French brand, operated independently by TCL Communication under trademark licensing from Nokia, has been inactive in the Indian smartphone arena for the last couple of years. Sheth is likely to maintain his position at HTech, which serves as Honor’s distributor in India. Meanwhile, Sheth teased the launch of new Honor products shortly after revealing his involvement with Nxtcell.

Madhav Sheth Joining Nxtcell to Reintroduce Alcatel Smartphones

In an X post on Tuesday, Madhav Sheth announced his close collaboration with the Nxtcell team. “I am thrilled to announce the launch of Alcatel smartphones in India. I will be working closely with the Nxtcell team to spearhead technology transfer, foster patent-driven innovation, and ensure that local manufacturing aligns with India’s vision for tech self-reliance,” said Sheth.

The technology agreements are signed, and the local manufacturing efforts are set to play a major role in strengthening India’s tech ecosystem and expanding export capabilities, he added.

Shortly after disclosing his decision to venture into a new chapter with Alcatel, Madhav Sheth posted on X that Honor has secured approvals to launch five products in India. The HTech’s CEO did not disclose any specifications for the phones. The post, however, suggests that Sheth may continue his role at HTech while working with Nxtcell.

After leaving Realme, Sheth joined HTech in 2023 to bring Honor smartphones back to the Indian market.

Alcatel announced its return to the Indian market in the first week of April. The brand, operated independently by TCL Communication, is planning to bring a range of premium smartphones to the country, and they will be sold via Flipkart’s main platform and its quick-delivery service, Flipkart Minutes. The e-commerce company is teasing the arrival of new handsets through a dedicated landing page on its website.

Alcatel has already confirmed that it will introduce a smartphone equipped with a stylus. The brand’s product line will incorporate some unnamed patented innovations. Alcatel smartphones will be manufactured locally in the country, aligning with the government’s Make in India initiative. It is aiming to establish a pan-India service network to offer customer support.

Uber Sued by FTC Over ‘Deceptive’ Subscription Sign-Ups

Uber Technologies was sued by the US Federal Trade Commission, which claims the rideshare and delivery company hurt consumers through “deceptive billing and cancellation practices” as part of its flagship subscription service.

In a complaint filed Monday, the FTC alleges the company charged consumers for its Uber One product without their consent, misled users about the program’s savings and made it “unreasonably” burdensome to cancel the service. The agency found users can be required to navigate as many as 23 screens and take up to 32 actions to cancel, according to an FTC statement.

Uber shares dropped, extending declines after the announcement to as much as 5.3 percent in New York. They were down 4.5 percent at 2:15 p.m. to $71.84 (roughly Rs. 6,120).

The company denied the FTC’s claims, saying the company doesn’t sign up or charge consumers without their consent, and that cancellations now take most people 20 seconds or less. “We are disappointed that the FTC chose to move forward with this action, but are confident that the courts will agree with what we already know: Uber One’s sign-up and cancellation processes are clear, simple, and follow the letter and spirit of the law,” a spokesman said.

The FTC’s three commissioners voted 2-0 to bring the case, with Mark Meador, the newest commissioner, recused. The lawsuit confirms a Bloomberg News report last year that the regulator had opened an investigation into the company over the enrollment and cancellation aspects of Uber One. In the final days of the Biden administration, the FTC also began probing whether Uber and rival Lyft Inc. illegally coordinated to limit drive pay in New York City.

The FTC enforces consumer protection laws against companies that mislead consumers about subscription terms. The agency has recently sued several companies, including Amazon.com Inc. and Adobe Inc., for allegedly making it too difficult to cancel subscriptions.

ElevenLabs Unveils Agent Transfer Feature to Share Data Between AI Agents

ElevenLabs introduced a new enterprise-focused feature on Monday that will allow artificial intelligence (AI) agents to communicate with each other. Dubbed Agent Transfer, the feature transfers a conversation from one agent to another when specific conditions are met. The first agent also shares the previous conversation data with the onboarding agent to help it contextualise the information and carry forward the conversation. The AI audio-focused company says this feature will allow businesses to build parallel AI agents with different specialisations.

ElevenLabs Introduces a New Agentic Feature

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the AI firm announced the release of the new agentic feature. Agent Transfer is part of Conversational AI and allows two AI agents to communicate and share conversations. It is currently available to enterprises, but the company has not mentioned if the capability will be priced separately or will be part of the existing plans. ElevenLabs has also detailed how developers can set this capability via the Conversational AI in a support page.

As businesses increasingly adopt AI agents into their internal and external workflows, there is a need to avoid data silos, so that the information does not remain limited to one business function while being unavailable to the rest. While different AI giants are coming up with different solutions to create centralised data hubs, ElevenLabs is trying to get agents to talk to each other to share data.

How it will work is interesting. Imagine the first AI agent is having a conversation that leads to an escalation or a scenario where its knowledge base is not able to assist the human user any further. Typically, AI agents hand over the conversation to a human agent who then takes the conversation forward, or they register the request or complaint for a human agent to review later.

With Agent Transfer, the AI agent will be able to transfer the conversation to another agent, which might have the knowledge to better assist the user. The first chatbot will also transfer the conversation history, allowing the onboarding agent to gain full context of the conversation so far.

One key area where such a system would benefit businesses is the customer support department. Enterprises could build specialised AI agents capable of handling general queries, technical queries, complaints, and so on. By running these AI systems in parallel, businesses can further optimise the operation, the company claimed.

Zoom Expands Agentic Offerings With Custom AI Companion, Zoom Tasks and Other Features

Zoom launched several new enterprise-focused features last week, expanding its agentic tools. The San Jose-based communications technology company is introducing several AI agents across the Zoom Workplace, including Custom AI Companion, Zoom Tasks, and more. Additionally, the company is also rolling out multiple new features for its existing products, such as Zoom Phone, Whiteboard, and Zoom CX. The new features arrive a month after Zoom unveiled its agentic strategy and revealed the roadmap for the features arriving in the coming months.

Zoom Introduces New Agentic Features for Enterprises

In a press release, the company announced the launch of agentic tools such as the Custom AI Companion, Voice Recorder, Tasks, and Custom Avatars. Apart from this, it is also introducing new features for Zoom Meetings, Zoom Team Chat, Zoom Whiteboard, Zoom Revenue Accelerator, and more.

Zoom Tasks is a new feature being added to the AI Companion. It can detect, manage, and complete tasks across Zoom Workplace. It can automatically generate tasks from Zoom Team Chat, Mail, or Docs, and convert them into actionable tasks that users can do themselves or delegate to the AI Companion.

Tasks can also provide insights and recommend next steps. Additionally, the feature utilises the centralised task management tab to help the entire team keep track of its actions. Zoom Tasks is now available with Zoom Workplace plans. The AI Companion capabilities are only available to paid users.

Custom AI Companion Features and Pricing

Custom AI Companion is also rolling out for enterprises. It is an AI agent that is powered by Zoom AI Studio. Essentially a customised version of the AI Companion, it can connect to integrated third-party AI agents to carry out a wide set of tasks. The company says the agent will support Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Google’s Agent to Agent Protocol to seamlessly connect to external tools.

Apart from that, the Custom AI Companion can also be connected to enterprise data via the new “Bring Your Own Index (BYOI)” feature. Zoom says the tool can be integrated with data sources such as project management tools, cloud storage, email accounts, and customer databases.

Custom AI Companion will also offer the Custom Avatars for Zoom Clips feature. It can be used to create an AI-generated clip. The clip will contain an avatar in the user’s likeness, which will speak a script shared by the user. Zoom says such clips can be used for employee orientation, project briefs, and more. The company is also adding several safeguards to ensure the tool is not used to generate offensive or harmful clips.

Currently, Custom Avatars are available as a part of the Custom AI Companion add-on, but in May, the company plans to release it as a separate product. The Custom AI Companion add-on is available for $12 (roughly Rs. 1,020) per user per month.

Other Notable Features

A new Voice Recorder feature in AI Companion can transcribe, summarise, and capture action items from Zoom Meetings or Zoom Phone calls, eliminating the need for note-taking while interacting with others. It will be rolled out later this month in the mobile app, and the company plans to bring it to Rooms later this year.

Zoom Team Chat is also expanding its multilingual support. The company is using a native small language model (SLM) to provide improved translations from eight languages, including German, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Portuguese-Brazilian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese (to English).

The platform is also adding a new capability that will let participants mention people who are not in a chat or channel and share their contact information without adding them. AI Companion can also schedule meetings with multiple participants, and the chatbot will find the best times for all invitees by pulling data from across the platform. It will then suggest the scheduling options, and the user can either accept or make changes to it.

Once the schedule has been fixed, the AI Companion will set up a Zoom meeting, add it to the participants’ calendars, and generate suggested meeting topics and agendas. During meetings, users can also create private group chats, either with a single participant or with a specific subset. Users will be able to add a custom name to the groups.

The company is also adding agentic features to the Zoom Revenue Accelerator. The agent can run on admin-configured sales methodologies, and admins can deploy custom frameworks to ensure repeatable approach based on what works for an organisation. Zoom claims the new feature uses large language models (LLMs) to analyse sales conversations to surface key customer insights.

Further, a deal explorer feature in Zoom Revenue Accelerator will allow users to surface sales insights via natural language prompts. The tool can analyse information across customers’ entire opportunity cycle, and present the information. Citing an example, the company said sales professionals can ask queries such as “What are the next steps for this opportunity?” or “Has pricing been discussed?” and the AI will provide a contextual answer.

Ethereum’s Upcoming ‘Pectra’ Upgrade to Improve Blockchain’s Stability, Efficiency: All Details

Ethereum, touted as the most commercial blockchain in existence, is set to undergo a significant upgrade in the coming days. Dubbed “Pectra”, the upgrade is aimed at improving Ethereum’s efficiency, stability, and usability. Initially, the upgrade was slated to be completed around early April, however, owing to the ongoing tests on the upgrade its deployment has been pushed by some days. According to Tim Beiko, who runs the core protocol meetings for Ethereum, the upgrade could be completed by April 30.

Pectra’s introduction to Ethereum will improve the blockchain’s ability to augment accounts and upgrade the experience for its validators, as per an official blog from Ethereum. It will also expand Ethereum’s scalability range for the supported Layer-2 blockchains like Arbitrum, Base, and Polygon among others.

Some Key Highlights

With Pectra, Ethereum users will be able to replace traditional private key-controlled accounts with programmable smart contracts for greater flexibility and security. This will notably advance Ethereum’s “account abstraction” features.

Explaining the feature, Ethereum said it represented “a major step toward widespread account abstraction, enabling users to enhance their Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs) with smart contract functionality.

“This hybrid approach combines the simplicity of EOAs with the programmability of contract-based accounts,” the blog post read.

Through the feature, users will be able to execute multiple operations within a single transaction. This will eliminate the need to execute separate transactions for transaction approvals and token swapping.

Another significant feature that will come with Pectra is the “Gas Sponsorship”. Essentially, users will be able to process gas fee payments through other crypto tokens instead of accepting only ETH tokens.

For network validators, Pectra will introduce profitable rewards. “Pectra raises the maximum balance a validator can receive rewards on from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH, through an opt-in update of withdrawal credential type. For smaller stakers, this enables automatic reward compounding. Both existing and new validators can be configured to earn rewards on the entirety of their stake, up to 2048 ETH per validator,” the network explained.

Beiko has posted more details on the upcoming upgrade on X.

The word “Pectra” has been explained as the combination of Prague, the location of Devcon IV, and Electra, a blue-white giant star in the constellation of Taurus. Its testnet was activated on February 24.

Previous Ethereum Upgrades

In March 2024, Ethereum had undergone the Dencun upgrade. It was aimed at lowering the expenses for the Ethereum-supported Layer 2 networks.

Before that, Ethereum had completed its Shanghai upgrade in April 2023. That upgrade started allowing validators to withdraw their staked ETH tokens on the PoS network.

In 2022, Ethereum saw one of its biggest upgrades when its consensus shifted from energy-intensive Proof of Work (PoW) mechanism to the eco-friendly Proof of Stake (PoS). This upgrade was called the “Merge”.
