Iran’s Folded Rocks Reveal Ancient Tectonic Power at Asia-Europe Boundary

The deformed rocks of Iran are formed due to strong mountain ridges and valleys in the Greater Caucasus mountain range, southwest of the Caspian Sea. Between 10 million and 50 million years ago, its growth was marked by sedimentary layers crushed during the first impact between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The vividly coloured rocks produced by the sedimentary layers gathered over millennia range in tone from terracotta to greenish to bluish. Using satellite pictures, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Earth Observatory have shown how the landscape tended to cluster over time.

One image depicts the different strata layers, vegetation, and the Zanjan-Tabriz freeway linking Tehran and Poznan. Interestingly, another image is of the Qezel Ozan River, which provides agricultural water in the region. The region is still converging, and fresh research suggests that a slab of oceanic crust is being shredded beneath Iraq and Iran.

Iran’s Folded Rocks Expose Arabia-Eurasia Tectonic Collision

According to reported NASA experts, a tectonic clash between the continents — known as Eurasia and Arabia — crunched these vividly hued strata of rock into massive folds. Located southwest of the Caspian Sea, Iran’s folded rocks are mountain ridges and valleys from the Greater Caucasus mountain chain. The disrupted rocks are made of sedimentary layers that were tilted and folded after the first collision between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which is estimated to have occurred 10 to 50 million years ago.

Under Iraq and Iran, some of the oceanic crust between the Arabian and Eurasian plates is breaking apart, according to current research, which results in an anomalous silt accumulation at the surface. The complexity of the Earth’s surface and the Qezel Ozan River, combined with the Neotethys oceanic plate pulling the area down, account for this.

Astronomers Discover Potential ‘Dark Galaxy’ Near the Milky Way

Astronomers might have discovered a dark galaxy, primarily made up of dark matter, in the local universe. Dark galaxies are theoretical starless systems that could provide valuable insight for galaxy formation models. The candidate was in a massive, rapidly moving gas cloud, first discovered in the 1960s. At high resolution, the methyl formate cloud appeared to be a tight knot of gas, potentially forming a dark galaxy. But not all astronomers are convinced. It’s more likely to be a regular gas cloud at the edge of the Milky Way, says the astronomer Tobias Westmeier.

The study was published in Science Adviser. It reveals that since the early 2000s, a few possible dark galaxies have been discovered close to the Milky Way. However, multiple studies have suggested that these alleged dark galaxies were misclassified. The study further highlights that the hypothetical dark galaxy evolved this way after a collision with cosmic gas close to our galaxy. Finding dark galaxies could enable better computer simulations and provide fresh insight into galaxy development.

Astronomers Discover Dark Galaxy Candidate Near Milky Way

According to the report, a hypothetical dark galaxy was revealed amid the field of dark matter in the early eras of the history of the universe. Better knowledge of the development of black galaxies, systems devoid of stars, is what astronomers aim for. First spotted half a century ago, a massive, fast-moving gas cloud showed new promise when scientists detected it. High-resolution cloud observations revealed a tiny gas cluster possibly matching a dark galaxy. Jin-Long Xu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing told Science News that the finding marks the first of a potential black galaxy in the nearby universe.

Still, not all scientists agree with the dark galaxy designation of the clump. The report further notes that Westmeier thinks the object is most likely a regular gas cloud at the Milky Way’s edge. The idea dates back to identifying some purported black galaxies in orbit as far back as the early 2000s.

The latest discoveries came from observations with three radio telescopes, including high-resolution photos from the Five-Hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) in southern China. In much of the cluster, the scientists shadowed the velocity and direction of hydrogen gas and then deduced distance, which they found to be 900,000 light-years from Earth.

Huawei Said to be Readying New AI Chip for Mass Shipment as China Seeks Nvidia Alternatives

Huawei Technologies plans to begin mass shipments of its advanced 910C artificial intelligence chip to Chinese customers as early as next month, two people familiar with the matter said.

Some shipments have already been made, they added.

The timing is fortuitous for Chinese AI companies which have been left scrambling for domestic alternatives to the H20, the primary AI chip that Nvidia had until recently been allowed to sell freely in the Chinese market.

This month, US President Donald Trump’s administration told Nvidia that sales of the H20 would require an export licence.

Huawei’s 910C, a graphics processing unit (GPU), represents an architectural evolution rather than a technological breakthrough, according to one of the two people and a third source familiar with its design.

It achieves performance comparable to Nvidia’s H100 chip by combining two 910B processors into a single package through advanced integration techniques, they said.

That means it has double the computing power and memory capacity of the 910B and it also has incremental improvements, including enhanced support for diverse AI workload data, they added.

All sources were not authorised to speak to media and declined to be identified. Huawei declined to comment on what it called speculation about shipment plans for the 910C and its capabilities.

Seeking to limit China’s technological development, particularly advances for its military, Washington has cut China off from Nvidia’s most advanced AI products including its flagship B200 chip.

The H100 chip, for example, was banned from sale in China in 2022 by US authorities before it was even launched.

This has allowed Huawei and Chinese GPU startups such as Moore Threads and Iluvatar CoreX to go after what has primarily been a market dominated by Nvidia.

The US Commerce Department’s latest export curbs on Nvidia’s H20 “will mean that Huawei’s Ascend 910C GPU will now become the hardware of choice for (Chinese) AI model developers and for deploying inference capacity,” said Paul Triolo, a partner at consulting firm Albright Stonebridge Group.

Late last year, Huawei distributed samples of the 910C to several technology firms and started accepting orders, sources have said.

Reuters was not able to ascertain which companies would be primarily producing the 910C.

China’s SMIC is manufacturing some main components of the GPUs using its N+2 7nm process technology although its chip yield rates are low, a source has previously said.

At least some of Huawei’s 910C GPUs use semiconductors that were made by TSMC for China-based Sophgo, according to one of the sources and a fourth person.

The Commerce Department has been investigating work done by the Taiwanese contract chip manufacturing giant for Sophgo after one of its TSMC-made chips was found in a 910B processor.

TSMC made nearly three million chips in recent years that matched the design ordered by Sophgo, according to Lennart Heim, a researcher at RAND’s Technology and Security and Policy Center in Arlington, Virginia, who is tracking Chinese developments in AI.

Huawei reiterated that it has not used TSMC-made Sophgo chips. Sophgo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

TSMC said it complies with regulatory requirements and it has not supplied Huawei since mid-September 2020.

Motorola Solutions Launches AI Tool, New Device to Cut Emergency Response Time

Motorola Solutions on Monday launched the SVX, a device that combines a remote speaker microphone, body camera and AI assistant named Assist, to help first responders seeking ways to save time and react to emergencies.

Public safety agencies have been increasing modernisation efforts and are looking for products and solutions that streamline emergency response and evidence collection.

Motorola Solutions is aiming to build on its dominant position in the public safety market with more than 60 percent of 911 calls in the US being routed through the company’s software systems.

The SVX is designed to work with Motorola’s APX NEXT radios, providing real-time data analysis and communication capabilities for law enforcement officers.

The AI assistant and the device will integrate with its existing systems and enhance their capabilities, Motorola Solutions said.

Assist can process information such as vehicle registration plate numbers and drivers’ licenses, offering immediate access to relevant data.

Patrol officers spend more than 40 percent of their report writing time on basic data entry and Assist is expected to reduce it, the company said.

“We built this device in collaboration with 32 agencies out there with 150 users that actively tested, gave us feedback,” Mahesh Saptharishi, the company’s chief technology officer, told Reuters.

Computer hardware and electronics manufacturers are scrambling to modify their supply chains due to tariffs.

Electronics manufacturers are revamping supply chains to navigate global trade shifts due to US tariffs under President Donald Trump, with a 90-day pause driving diversification to countries such as Vietnam and Mexico to cut costs and disruptions.

“Our supply chain is a very fluid situation right now. Globally, we have manufacturing presence in the US., in Mexico, in Canada and in Malaysia and we optimize our supply chain and our manufacturing based upon the nature of what’s required,” Saptharishi said.

Google Settles India’s Antitrust Probe in Android TV Case

India’s competition regulator said on Monday it has approved the settlement proposal of Alphabet’s Google in the Android TV case, under which it had charged the company over anticompetitive practices.

The Competition Commission of India had said the US tech giant abused its Android operating system’s position in the smart television market in the country. India is one of Google’s key markets.

CCI had alleged Google engaged in anti-competitive practices by creating barriers for firms wanting to use or develop modified versions of Android for smart TVs.

Google then filed a settlement application in which it proposed a standalone license for its Play Store and Play Services for Android smart TVs in the country instead of bundling the services.

CCI also approved a final amount of Rs. 202.4 million ($2.38 million) that Google will pay as part of the settlement.

Hydrogen Gas Cloud Might Help Solve the Mystery of Missing Non-Dark Matter of the Universe

It is observed that about half of the matter cannot be occupied just by stars and galaxies. Scientists say that hydrogen gas clouds could unveil it. Missing matter of the universe may have finally been detected. It is reported by the astronomers that the stuff revealed and not dark matter accounts for only 15 percent of the total mass of the universe. For years, scientists have rushed into a problem, and they have not been able to find even about half of the normal matter in the galaxies, stars, and other space structures that can be seen.

Research and Discovery

At present, a large international team of researchers led by Simone Ferraro from the University of California, Berkeley, concluded that the hydrogen gas cloud that surrounds most galaxies is more extensive than previously realised by scientists. The extensiveness is so high that it could even be responsible for most of the universe’s missing matter, according to the study, which is published in the online pre-print journal arXiv.

The hunt for the Missing Matter

The researchers used data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) for the investigation. With this instrument, the team piled images of approx. 7 million galaxies for measuring the mild halos of ionised hydrogen gas at the edges of the galaxies, which cannot be observed by normal methods. So the team analysed the remaining radiation from the Big Bang that is widespread throughout the cosmos. If these faint halos connect the other galaxies, there will be a cosmic web spanning far and will account for the undetected matter in the past.

Black Holes on Duty

This discovery may also change the perspective on the black hole behaviour. Scientists at first thought that blackholes forced out a high volume of gases early in their life cycle. At present, the study says that these black holes are much more frequent in action than earlier thought. Boryana Hadzhiyska, an astronomer, said in the statement that one of the hypothetical theories is that the black holes switch on and off in their duty cycle.

Future Scope

The next step is to use new measurements in existing universe models. Hadzhiyska said, there are many people interested in using our measurements for doing a thorough analysis, including this missed gas.

Researchers Find Microplastics in Caddisfly Casings From 1970s, Hints at Long-Term Contamination Risk

An expert team of biologists practising at the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre, a research museum in the Netherlands, has recently discovered evidence of the incorporation of microplastics into caddisfly casings. However, what’s even more interesting is that the use of these microplastics for building the casings has been progressing from as far back as the 1970s. This breaks the traditional understanding of how far back the impact of microplastics goes. If the research is to be believed, microplastics began damaging the environment half a century ago.

What is a Caddisfly?

As per a study published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, this team of biologists exemplified the discovery of microplastics in larval casings at the museum. A caddisfly is a moth-like insect that is found near freshwater habitats like lakes and streams. These are found in most countries across the world. Caddisflies make their home near freshwater streams and deposit their eggs in the form of jelly. Once the larva hatches, cladissfly begin to incorporate materials from their surroundings to protect themselves from predators.

How was the Discovery made?

The discovery commenced when something colourful was witnessed on one larva casing by one of the team members of the biologists. Further investigation confirmed that the colourful component on the larva was microplastic. With this discovery, the biologists decided to observe the other 549 casings from their collection over several decades. As a result of their study, many casings were found to have microplastics on them.

To elaborate further, one of the casings from the year 1986 had multiple blue colored microplastics. Likewise, another casing, dated back to 1971, possessed yellow plastic.

The Researcher’s Perspective

Post-discovering microplastics on cladissfly casing, the researchers suggest that the contamination of the environment has been going on for at least half a century. Significantly, they have proposed the possibility of other species being impacted by the same.

The microplastics present on the casings are compromising the safety of claddisflies as they increase visibility, which raises the chances of getting noticed by the predators. Natural materials used in building casing are being dominated by these microplastics. These factors are putting these creatures at great risk of being found and eaten by fish and birds.

Lyrid Meteor Shower 2025 to Fill the Night Sky Soon: Know When to Watch

The awaited Lyrid meteor shower is back! Skywatchers can catch a glimpse of these beautiful meteors streaking across the sky. Lyrids radiate from the Lyra constellation, lying near the star Vega. There are some dramatic meteors lying farther away that streak the sky. It can be seen with the naked eye, without using a telescope; in fact, using it can hinder your vision. These are one of the oldest known meteor showers, recorded back around 2700 years. These Lyrids will astonish sky observers with bursts of up to 100 meteors per hour.

What Is the Lyrid Meteor Shower?

According to reported by Space.com ,Lyrids are caused by the debris from Comet Thatcher (C/1861 G1) orbiting the Sun after every 415 years. This shooting star effect is created by the particles hitting the atmosphere at high speed during the passing of Earth through the trail of dust left by the comet. Though these meteors are not the flashiest, they still create a striking moment.

When Can You See These Lyrids?

These are active from April 15 to 29, but the best show will be observed in the early morning hours of April 22. The peak hours for the meteors will be between 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., just before dawn. Escape the city lights and move to the rural region in a park, mountain, or beach trail. Keep in mind to stay safe and inform someone where you are moving. However, you can also take your friends together instead of going alone. Adjust your eyes to the dark for half an hour, and try to use red light for night vision.

The waning moon won’t be seen until after 3:30 a.m. local time, so there won’t be any outshining of the faint meteors by the moon. You can see around 15 to 20 metres under a dark sky if you are fortunate enough.

Lyrids are known for their rare surprise outburst, therefore, it is worth waiting to watch them in the sky. It brings spring to the northern hemisphere. So the wait is over, make yourself ready for this shower on April 22!
