Samsung Begins Global Rollout of Good Lock App for Galaxy Devices Starting With Romania: Report

Samsung is said to be in the process of rolling out its Good Lock app to all countries. According to a report, users in Romania can download the app on their Galaxy devices to gain access to its extensive suite of customisation and personalisation features. Although the app has been around for several years now, its availability was limited to around 40 countries. Following a myriad of leaks, the company officially announced in January that the app would eventually be available globally, and the rollout now appears to be taking place.

Samsung Good Lock App Global Rollout

SamMobile reports that the Good Lock app is now available for download in Romania, a country where it wasn’t previously accessible. Although Samsung had announced that Galaxy users would be available to download the app via both the Galaxy Store and the Google Play Store, its current availability appears to be limited to the former.

Notably, The Samsung Good Lock app is a customisation suite for Galaxy smartphones that allows users to play around with various modules and add new functionalities which are not originally part of the phone’s feature-set. It supports a total of 23 functions, such as creating new styles for the lock screen and always-on display, organising navigation bar options and swipe gestures, and creating backgrounds that move along in the direction in which the device moves. The app is compatible with Samsung Galaxy A and Galaxy S series handsets.

Previous reports hinted towards the introduction of the Good Lock app following the release of the stable One UI 7 update. Now, its rollout is said to be taking place around the same time as the company expands its One UI 7 availability to more devices and regions. However, its compatibility is not limited to the Android 15-based OS since the global rollout isn’t complete.

Initially introduced with the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung expanded One UI 7 to include the Galaxy S24 models in South Korea. It was followed by its release in the EU and other markets, but the rollout has reportedly been halted due to the discovery of a serious bug which caused users to be locked out of their devices.

How to Add Music to Your WhatsApp Status

WhatsApp recently began rolling out a new feature that allows you to add music to your WhatsApp Status. Just like Meta’s other social platforms Instagram and Facebook, you can now add up to 15 seconds of music for an image and up to 60 seconds when uploading a video. WhatsApp Status updates — including those with music — are protected with end-to-end encryption (so WhatsApp can’t see which songs are added to a Status) and will be available for 24 hours after they are posted.

We’ve tested the new feature that lets you add music to your Status on the latest version of WhatsApp for iOS and Android. The WhatsApp Status composer now includes a new music icon, which displays a pop-up card when tapped. You can search for specific tracks, or select one of several tracks that are popular in your region.

Apple Takes Top Spot for First-Quarter Smartphone Sales, Data Shows

Apple took the top spot for global smartphone sales in the first quarter on the back of the iPhone 16e’s launch and strong demand in countries such as Japan and India, data from Counterpoint Research showed on Monday.

Apple had 19 percent of the smartphone market, despite flat or declining sales in the US, Europe and China, followed by Samsung with 18 percent of the market, according to Counterpoint.

The International Data Corporation, which tracks mobile phone shipments, said global shipments rose 1.5 percent in the first quarter, with Apple rushing to stockpile units to avoid tariffs imposed by US president Donald Trump.

Trump’s back-and-forth tariffs and escalation of global trade tensions has resulted in global financial market turmoil for the past two weeks, a worsening economic outlook and the possibility of stronger inflation.

Apple had chartered cargo flights to ferry 600 tons of iPhones, or as many as 1.5 million, to the United States from India in an effort to beat the tariffs.

However, Trump’s decision to exclude smartphones, computers and some other electronics from the sweeping reciprocal duties on China led to a rise in global tech shares on Monday.

“The recent exemption by the US government pausing smartphone import tariffs from China offers temporary relief for US companies, but heavy reliance on China’s supply chain persists amid ongoing tariff volatility,” said Ryan Reith, group vice president, worldwide device trackers, IDC.

“Right now, the focus for US smartphone brands should be taking advantage of the exemption by building and shipping as much as possible.”

Counterpoint, which expects the smartphone market to decline this year due to tariff-related uncertainty, said Xiaomi continued its sales momentum in third place, while Vivo took the fourth spot and OPPO was fifth.

Spotify Ad Exchange and Generative AI Ads Launch in India, Offers Access to Platform’s Logged-in Users

Spotify is launching its Spotify Ad Exchange (SAX) platform and advertiser-focused artificial intelligence (AI) tools in India. Announced on Monday, the new services for advertisers in the country were launched just a week after its global launch. SAX is a programmatic ad platform that automates the process of buying and placing ads on the platform. The audio streaming platform claimed that the platform would offer full addressability and performance measurement capabilities to advertisers for the first time in India. Alongside, users will also get to generate audio ads for free via Generative AI Ads within the Ads Manager.

Spotify’s New Ad Platform and AI Features are Now Available in India

In a press release, the company announced the launch of its SAX platform and Generative AI Ads in India. The SAX platform was first released in the US and Canada, and is now being expanded to more regions including India. The company says it will allow advertisers to access the platform’s logged-in users via real-time auction. Advertisers will also be able to track the reach of the ads via the platform.

Notably, SAX offers real-time bidding (RTB) type of programmatic advertising. In this, multiple advertisers bid for ad space via the demand-side platforms (DSPs) and the highest bigger is allotted the ad space. Then, the winning ad is loaded on the page and the entire process occurs within seconds.

In India, Spotify’s programmatic ads platform is integrated with Google Display & Video 360, Magnite, and The Trade Desk on the demand side. Advertisers can use these platforms to access the streaming platform’s suite of audio, video, and display ads. The company will soon add podcast ads to its offerings. Users will also be able to find their target audience and track results across multiple media ecosystems.

Spotify conducted an internal analysis of more than 350 ad campaigns across various publishers within Google DV 360 and claimed to have found that the SAX platform led to an average incremental reach of 11.5 percent without increasing media spending. Additionally, the company said the platform also maximises unique reach and reduces ad repetition, mitigating the risk of brand fatigue.

Alongside, the company is also introducing Spotify Generative AI Ads. It is available within the company’s Ads Manager platform and allows advertisers to generate script and voiceovers using AI to create AI-powered voice ads at no additional cost. The platform said that advertisers of all sizes in India could use this AI tool to create and deploy scalable audio ads on Spotify.

Google Introduces Ironwood, Its Seventh Generation TPU Designed to Handle AI Inference

Google introduced the seventh generation of its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), Ironwood, last week. Unveiled at Google Cloud Next 25, it is said to be the company’s most powerful and scalable custom artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator. The Mountain View-based tech giant said the chipset was specifically designed for AI inference — the compute used by an AI model to process a query and generate a response. The company will soon make its Ironwood TPUs available to developers via the Google Cloud platform.

Google Introduces Ironwood TPU for AI Inference

In a blog post, the tech giant introduced its seventh-generation AI accelerator chipset. Google stated that Ironwood TPUs will enable the company to move from a response-based AI system to a proactive AI system, which is focused on dense large language models (LLMs), mixture-of-expert (MoE) models, and agentic AI systems that “retrieve and generate data to collaboratively deliver insights and answers.”

Notably, TPUs are custom-built chipsets aimed at AI and machine learning (ML) workflows. These accelerators offer extremely high parallel processing, especially for deep learning-related tasks, as well as significantly high power efficiency.

Google said each Ironwood chip comes with peak compute of 4,614 teraflop (TFLOP), which is a considerably higher throughput compared to its predecessor Trillium, which was unveiled in May 2024. The tech giant also plans to make these chipsets available as clusters to maximise the processing power for higher-end AI workflows.

Ironwood can be scaled up to a cluster of 9,216 liquid-cooled chips linked with an Inter-Chip Interconnect (ICI) network. The chipset is also one of the new components of Google Cloud AI Hypercomputer architecture. Developers on Google Cloud can access Ironwood in two sizes — a 256 chip configuration and a 9,216 chip configuration.

At its most expansive cluster, Ironwood chipsets can generate up to 42.5 Exaflops of computing power. Google claimed that its throughput is more than 24X of the compute generated by the world’s largest supercomputer El Capitan, which offers 1.7 Exaflops per pod. Ironwood TPUs also come with expanded memory, with each chipset offering 192GB, sextuple of what Trillium was equipped with. The memory bandwidth has also been increased to 7.2Tbps.

Notably, Ironwood is currently not available to Google Cloud developers. Just like the previous chipset, the tech giant will likely first transition its internal systems to the new TPUs, including the company’s Gemini models, before expanding its access to developers.

UPI Services Hit by Another Outage, NPCI Says ‘Working to Resolve the Issue’

A major outage on Saturday morning caused Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services to stop working across India, affecting thousands of customers. The UPI services on multiple platforms, like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, Bhim, and more, were disrupted due to this outage. Moreover, it also extended to major financial institutions like HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and more. Multiple users across the country reported that they could not transact using UPI. This also marks the fourth disruption of UPI services within a month.

UPI Services Down in India

As per the latest data available on DownDetector, more than 2,000 people reported the outage. Users began reporting issues with UPI transactions around 11:26 AM IST, which peaked at 1:02 PM IST. This comes days after India’s most widely used digital payment system experienced two major outages within a week.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has acknowledged this and issued a statement on its official X handle. The tweet reads, “NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused.”

UPI Services Suffer from Multiple Outages

This is the fourth time UPI services have been disrupted in the country. The first outage was reported on March 26, 2025, when users of various UPI apps could not transact for more than three hours. The second major outage happened on March 31. Users also reported trouble due to payment processing issues, which NPCI clarified was due to bank-side delays during the financial year-end closing. Then again, a brief disruption occurred on April 2, 2025, due to “latency in the UPI network.”

Multiple users complained about the outage on social media platform X. “I am stuck in the airport with a delayed flight, a lost wallet with all my cash and cards, and then I discovered UPI was also not accepting any payments,” one user reported. “UPI crashes are too often these days, leaving many people stuck. We rely on it daily, but the system keeps failing us,” another X user posted.

Astronomers Detect Methane in the Atmosphere of the Nearest T Dwarf Star to Earth

The scientists have found methane in the atmosphere of WISEA J181006.18 −101000.5, the T dwarf closest to Earth. The study was published in the online preprint journal arXiv on March 28, and the final, revised version was published on November 17. The WISE1810 is a metal-poor T dwarf planet, which is situated at a distance of 29 light years from the Earth. The effective temperature of the dwarf is reported to be within the range of 800–1,300 K.

Methane Signature Surprises Astronomers

According to a Phys.org report, the finding is made greatly possible by the present 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The detection of methane in the atmosphere of the dwarf planet has further made its classification as T-type instead of L-type, which was earlier suggested in previous studies, the publication notes. The study further reveal that there are no traces of carbon monoxide and potassium in the atmosphere of the WISE1810.

The study further highlights that the carbon abundance in the planet is estimated to be -1.5 dex, while the effective temperature could be around 1,000 K. The author of the paper further revealed that the low metallicity of the T dwarf planet could be due to the non-detection of atomic potassium. However, a lower temperature could also boost this effect, the report further highlights. The study also found that WISE1810 has a heliocentric velocity of -83 km/s.

The 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) supplies a significant contribution to finishing WISEA J181006.18−101000 observations. Interestingly, the previous observations of the dwarf platent suggested that the atmosphere of the dwarf planet was dominated by hydrogen and water vapour. Moreover, the study further reveals that findings indicates WISE1810 could more likely to be associated with the Milky Way’s thick disk, despite its very low metallicity.

Scientists Finally Discover How Long a Day Lasts on Uranus

Scientists have finally found how about Uranus day length using the most recent analysis of a decade’s worth of Hubble Space Telescope data. As per the scientists, the Uranus holds 17 hours, 14 minutes, and 52 seconds to finish a complete rotation—that is, 28 seconds more than the estimation served by NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft. This estimation was made possible through the measurement of the magnetic fields and the radio waves coming from the auras of the planet. This understanding helps one derive surface mapping and alignment estimation in perplexing surroundings. Some of those maps may need to be reconsidered based on the most recent research.

Hubble Refines Uranus’ Spin and Orbit Time

According to reports, the Hubble Space Telescope study verified Uranus completed a revolution in 17 hours, 14 minutes, and 52 seconds. That is 28 seconds more than the NASA mission Voyager 2, from the 1980s.

The report further mentions that through examination of a ten-year record of aurora observations, a team headed by Laurent Lamy at the Paris Observatory in France revealed the magnetic poles of the planet. That long-term monitoring gave even more exact rotation periods—that is, nearly 84 Earth years for Uranus to orbit the sun.

Uranus’ Rotation Refined, Aiding Future Exploration

On Uranus, a day just lasts far longer. More precise rotational time observations of the gas giant should enable scientists to plan visits to investigate it. Unlike on Mars and Earth, savage windstorms make it far more difficult to identify the rotation times of the biggest solar system planets.

The first estimate of Uranus’s spin was shifted closer to the Voyager 2 probe, which made a close-range approach on January 24, 1986. The researchers during that time found out that the planet’s mangetic field was by 59 degrees from celestial north. Moreover, the researchers observed that its rotation axis was 98 degrees offset.

Uranus Spins Sideways with a 17-Hour Day, Scientists Confirm

The report further mentions that Uranus effectively revolves “lying down” compared to Earth; during this period, its magnetic poles find a giant circle as the planet rotates. These highest offsets mean With a safety margin of plus or minus 36 seconds, scientists at the time estimated that Uranus was completing a full revolution in every 17 hours, 14 minutes, and 24 seconds by measuring the magnetic field of the planet as well as radio emissions from aurora at its magnetic poles.
