Farallon Slab Beneath Midwest Pulls Crust Downward, Causing Widespread Thinning

An underground structure beneath central United States has been observed dragging surface materials deep into the Earth. This movement has been linked to an old piece of crust lodged far below the Midwest. Researchers have said this action is pulling rocks from across the continent towards a funnel-shaped region. It is believed this process is causing parts of the crust to thin as material is drawn downward. This phenomenon has been found to affect areas beyond the immediate region.

Underground slab tied to crust loss beneath Midwest

According to the study published in Nature Geoscience, the phenomenon has been tied to the remains of a long-subducted tectonic plate known as the Farallon slab. This slab, which sits around 660 kilometres below the surface, was identified as the driving force behind what scientists refer to as cratonic thinning. Cratons are known to be the stable core regions of continental crust and upper mantle that usually do not undergo change.

The seismic mapping project was led by Junlin Hua during his postdoctoral work at The University of Texas at Austin. He now serves as a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China. In a statement, Hua explained that a wide region is showing signs of thinning. He stated that the study has brought forward a new explanation behind this change.

New seismic method uncovers ‘dripping’ lithosphere

To observe the changes taking place beneath North America, researchers used a method known as full-waveform inversion. This seismic imaging approach allowed them to map the subsurface in high detail. According to Thorsten Becker, Geophysics Chair at UT Austin, this technique offered a better understanding of the link between deep mantle regions and the lithosphere above.

Computer simulations were used to confirm the effect. When the slab was included, the downward movement was visible. When removed, no such feature appeared.

Apple Said to Have Airlifted 600 Tons of iPhones From India to ‘Beat’ Trump Tariffs

Tech giant Apple chartered cargo flights to ferry 600 tons of iPhones, or as many as 1.5 million, to the United States from India, after it stepped up production there in an effort to beat President Donald Trump’s tariffs, sources told Reuters.

The details of the push provide an insight into the US smartphone company’s private strategy to navigate around the Trump tariffs and build up inventory of its popular iPhones in the United States, one of its biggest markets.

Analysts have warned that US prices of iPhones could surge, given Apple’s high reliance on imports from China, the main manufacturing hub of the devices, which is subject to Trump’s highest tariff rate of 125 percent.

That figure is far in excess of the tariff of 26 percent on imports from India, but which is now on hold after Trump called a 90-day pause this week that excludes China.

Apple “wanted to beat the tariff,” said one of the sources familiar with the planning.

The company lobbied Indian airport authorities to cut to six hours the time needed to clear customs at the Chennai airport in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, down from 30 hours, the source added.

The so-called “green corridor” arrangement at the airport in the Indian manufacturing hub emulated a model Apple uses at some airports in China, the source said.

About six cargo jets with a capacity of 100 tons each have flown out since March, one of them this week just as new tariffs kicked in, the source and an Indian government official said.

The packaged weight of an iPhone 14 and its charging cable come to about 350 grams (12.35 oz), Reuters measurements show, implying the total cargo of 600 tons comprised about 1.5 million iPhones, after accounting for some packaging weight.

Apple and India’s aviation ministry did not respond to a request for comment. All the sources sought anonymity as the strategy and discussions were private.

Apple sells more than 220 million iPhones a year worldwide, with Counterpoint Research estimating a fifth of total iPhone imports to the United States now come from India, and the rest from China.

Trump consistently increased US tariffs on China, to stand at 125 percent by Wednesday, from 54 percent earlier.

At the 54 percent tariff rate, the $1,599 (roughly Rs. 1.37 lakh) cost of the top-end iPhone 16 Pro Max in the United States would have surged to $2,300 (roughly Rs. 1.97 lakh), calculations based on projections by Rosenblatt Securities show.

Sunday Shifts

In India, Apple stepped up air shipments to meet its goal of a 20 percent increase in usual production at iPhone plants, attained by adding workers, and temporarily extending operations at the biggest Foxconn India factory to Sundays, the source added.

Two other direct sources confirmed the Foxconn plant in Chennai now runs on Sundays, which is typically a holiday. The plant turned out 20 million iPhones last year, including the latest iPhone 15 and 16 models.

As Apple diversifies its manufacturing beyond China, it has positioned India for a critical role. Foxconn and Tata, its two main suppliers there, have three factories in all, with two more being built.

Apple spent about eight months to plan and set up the expedited customs clearance in Chennai, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government asked officials to support Apple, one senior Indian official said.

Foxconn shipments from India to the United States surged in value to $770 million (roughly Rs. 6,628 crore) in January and $643 million (roughly Rs. 5,536 crore) in February, compared to the range of $110 million (roughly Rs. 947 crore) to $331 million (roughly Rs. 2,850 crore) in the prior four months, commercially available customs data shows.

More than 85 percent of the January and February air shipments of Foxconn were offloaded in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.

Foxconn did not respond to Reuters’ queries.

Google Reportedly Lays Off Hundreds of Employees in Android, Pixel Teams

Alphabet’s Google laid off hundreds of employees in its platforms and devices unit, The Information reported on Friday, citing a person with direct knowledge of the situation.

The cuts in the division, which houses the Android platform, Pixel phones and the Chrome browser among other applications, follow Google’s January buyout offers to employees in the unit, the report said.

“Since combining the platforms and devices teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively and this included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January,” a Google spokesperson told The Information.

Google did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Big Tech players have been redirecting spending towards data centers and AI development, while scaling back investments in other areas of their business.

Facebook-parent Meta laid off about five percent of its “lowest performers” in January while pushing ahead with the expedited hiring of machine learning engineers.

Microsoft also trimmed 650 jobs in its Xbox unit in September. Amazon laid off employees in several units, including communications, while Apple eliminated about 100 roles in its digital services group last year, according to media reports.

Bloomberg in February reported that Google had laid off employees in its cloud division, adding that the round of cuts impacted only a few teams.

In January 2023, Alphabet had announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs, or six percent of its global workforce.

Google Pixel Watch 4 Leaked Renders Hint at Few Design Changes; Tipped to Offer Wireless Charging Support

Google Pixel Watch 3 was unveiled in August during the company’s Made By Google event. The Pixel Watch 4 is likely to break cover later this year alongside the next generation of Google Pixel smartphones. While the launch of the Pixel Watch 4 might be a few months away, a new design leak has given us some hints about what to expect from the new smartwatch from Google. These purported renders reveal the complete design of the Pixel Watch 4, which is seen to sport a round, familiar-looking design.

Google Pixel Watch 4 Design (Expected)

Tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) leaked the 5K renders and a 360-degree video of the upcoming Pixel Watch 4 in collaboration with 91Mobiles. These images show the device in a black colourway, and it appears nearly identical to the previous model, featuring a round design and slightly thinner screen bezels.

The purported renders of the Google Pixel Watch 4 don’t feature the four magnetic charging pins seen on the back of the existing Pixel Watch 3 model, and the tipster suggests that it might support wireless charging instead.

The Pixel Watch 4 will reportedly be thicker than its predecessor. The new model is said to be 14.3mm thick, compared to the third-generation watch, which is 12.3mm thick. Hopefully, the thickness of the wearable was increased to make room for a larger battery. It is said to be available in 41mm and 45mm size options, like the Pixel Watch 3, with two buttons on either side of the speaker.

It is unclear when Google intends to launch the Pixel Watch 4. The latest model arrived in August last year alongside the Pixel 9 smartphones, so its successor could launch when the company unveils the purported Pixel 10 series.

The Pixel Watch 3 was launched in India at Rs. 39,900 for the 41mm model with Wi-Fi connectivity and Rs. 43,900 for the 45mm model with Wi-Fi. The 41mm version has a 307mAh battery, while the 45mm variant has a larger 420mAh battery.

Adobe Previews Agentic AI Tools Across Acrobat, Photoshop and Premiere Pro

Adobe shared a sneak peek of several under-development artificial intelligence (AI) agents across its platforms on Wednesday. The San Jose-based software giant is currently looking at how agentic tools can complete manual tasks to free up users to focus on creativity and productivity-based tasks. Adobe is building several AI agents for Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Acrobat, Adobe Express, and even Creative Cloud, that can make the creation and editing process easier for users. Notably, most of the previewed AI agents are currently not available to users, as the company is still working on them.

Adobe Previews AI Agents Across Product Lineup

In a blog post, the tech giant detailed the different AI agents it is currently working on. AI agents have become somewhat of a loosely used buzzword, with different companies defining it differently. But in essence, it is described as an AI system with a central intelligence and access to external tools that can not only analyse a problem and generate a solution, but can also take actions using tools to complete tasks autonomously.

Adobe’s previewed AI agents also fall under the same umbrella. The company is working on creating a suite of custom agents that can be assigned specific roles. These agents will come with different domain expertise, such as academic research, sales assistants, or tutors. After adding multiple files to Acrobat, users can activate the relevant agent and assign them tasks using a text prompt. The agents can then analyse the files, answer queries, and use reasoning to suggest more areas to explore. It can also derive insights from the files to create notes for the user.

The tech giant is also planning to add an AI agent to the Adobe Express workflow. The firefly-powered platform allows users to create and edit designs for a wide variety of purposes. The company says the AI agent in the platform will act as a “creative partner” and will assist the user in every stage of the creation process. Users will be able to ask the AI to create a design, make specific changes, and even take manual control and make edits themselves.

Adobe said enterprises can locally add a set of on-brand material, and the AI can understand the design language to generate images and creatives that adhere to the standard. Smaller startups can also benefit from the AI agent, as it can reduce the workload of the design team by outsourcing some of the creation process to the tool, the company added.

Later this month, Adobe plans to debut the first “creative agent” in Photoshop alongside a new Actions panel. The agent will be able to analyse images added to a project and recommend “context-aware” edits. Users can then accept or reject the changes with a single tap. Additionally, they can also use natural language prompts to access more than 1,000 actions via the tool.

The company highlighted that the main purpose of the planned AI tool is not just to provide users with an option to make faster edits, but to act as an assistant and get more out of Photoshop. Adobe said, in the future, the AI agent will also be able to share feedback and suggestions to help the user learn the platform better. It can also complete repetitive tasks such as preparing assets for export.

Creative Cloud, the company’s subscription-based on-cloud design service, is also said to be getting an AI agent. Adobe said the agent could be commanded to finish a series of tasks in the background while the user focuses on new design tasks or learning new techniques. These could include completing a mid-way design project or suggesting next steps in a workflow and completing them after the user gives confirmation.

Earlier this month, Adobe also introduced an agentic tool in Premiere Pro. Dubbed Media Intelligence, the agent comes with a new search bar and allows users to find a particular clip in the user’s library by typing a query in natural language. The tool can recognise a wide range of attributes, including objects, locations, camera angles, visuals, spoken words, or embedded metadata such as shoot data or camera type. This means editors can type “close-up of a glass of orange juice,” and the agent can find it from a large number of clips stored on the app.

Notably, apart from the AI agent in Premiere Pro, others are still under development, and the company might introduce them later this year. The AI agent in Photoshop could be the first to arrive after Adobe showcases it next month.

Trump Reverses ‘DeFi Broker Rule’ Introduced Under Biden: All Details

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will no longer require certain crypto platforms to report transaction data under President Donald Trump’s administration. In a major policy reversal, Trump has signed an executive order nullifying a rule that would have compelled decentralised exchanges to report their customers’ total digital asset sales to the IRS. Officially titled “Gross Proceeds Reporting by Brokers that Regularly Provide Services Effectuating Digital Asset Sales,” the legislation is more commonly known as the “DeFi Broker Rule.”

The rule was introduced during the final months of former President Joe Biden’s term and was scheduled to take effect in 2026. It was designed to combat tax evasion by improving oversight of cryptocurrency trading activity.

In the last few months, the rule garnered criticism from crypto advocates, who reportedly argued that because decentralised exchanges are automated software applications and not real “brokers”, they could not comply with the rule.

US Representative Mike Carey from Ohio, who was part of the signing ceremony for this order, highlighted that this is the first cryptocurrency bill that has been signed into law, making Trump the first US President to have done so.

“The DeFi Broker Rule needlessly hindered American innovation, infringed on the privacy of everyday Americans, and was set to overwhelm the IRS with an overflow of new filings that it doesn’t have the infrastructure to handle during tax season,” Carey said in his statement. He added that the IRS can now focus on the “duties and obligations it already owes to American taxpayers instead of creating a new series of bureaucratic hurdles.”

The now cancelled rule could have fetched the US Treasury up to $4 billion (roughly Rs. 4,64,852 crore), as per a CNN report.

In March, the US Senate had passed a resolution that suggested the overturning of this rule. In a statement issued on March 4, the Senate said that the rule inappropriately required certain DeFi participants to report gross proceeds from sales of crypto assets and submit data about the taxpayers involved.

“This rule would stifle American innovation and raise privacy concerns over the sharing of taxpayers’ personal information, while imposing an unprecedented compliance burden on American DeFi companies,” the Senate had said at the time.

Trump Embraces Crypto

Donald Trump has signed multiple pro-crypto orders since returning to the White House for his second Presidential term. He created a Crypto Task Force under the SEC to expedite the work on drafting crypto rules and also signed an executive order to create a Bitcoin reserve as well as a crypto stockpile.

SEC cases against multiple crypto firms like Binance, Ripple, and OpenSea among others have been dropped in recent weeks, bringing relief to the sector.

As part of his presidential campaign, Trump pledged to transform the US into the world’s “crypto capital.”

Earlier this week, the US DoJ disbanded the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET) — that was also established by Biden to probe crypto businesses in the US.
