Nvidia Briefly on Track to Become World’s Most Valuable Company Ever

Nvidia hit a market value of $3.92 trillion on Thursday, briefly putting it on track to become the most valuable company in history, as Wall Street doubled down on optimism about AI.

Shares of the leading designer of high-end AI chips rose as much as 2.4 percent to $160.98 in morning trading, giving the company a higher market capitalization than Apple’s record closing value of $3.915 trillion on December 26, 2024.

The shares were last up 1.5 percent at $159.60, leaving Nvidia’s stock market value at $3.89 trillion, just short of Apple’s record.

Nvidia’s newest chips have made gains in training the largest artificial-intelligence models, fueling demand for products by the Santa Clara, California, company.

Microsoft is currently the second-most valuable company on Wall Street, with a market capitalization of $3.7 trillion as its shares rose 1.7 percent to $499.56.

Apple rose 0.8 percent, giving it a market value of $3.19 trillion, in third place.

A race among Microsoft, Amazon.com, Meta Platforms, Alphabet and Tesla to build AI data centers and dominate the emerging technology has fueled insatiable demand for Nvidia’s high-end processors.

“When the first company crossed a trillion dollars, it was amazing. And now you’re talking four trillion, which is just incredible. It tells you that there’s this huge rush with AI spending and everybody’s chasing it right now,” said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading.

The stock market value of Nvidia, whose core technology was developed to power video games, has increased nearly eight-fold over the past four years, from $500 billion in 2021 to now near $4 trillion.

Nvidia is now worth more than the combined value of the Canadian and Mexican stock markets, according to LSEG data. The tech company also exceeds the total value of all publicly listed companies in the United Kingdom.

Nvidia recently traded at about 32 times analysts’ expected earnings for the next 12 months, below its average of about 41 over the past five years, according to LSEG data. That relatively modest price-to-earnings valuation reflects steadily increasing earnings estimates that have outpaced Nvidia’s sizable stock gains.

The company’s stock has now rebounded more than 68 percent from its recent closing low on April 4, when Wall Street was reeling from President Donald Trump’s global tariff announcements. US stocks, including Nvidia, have recovered on expectations that the White House will cement trade deals to soften Trump’s tariffs.

Nvidia’s swelling market capitalization underscores Wall Street’s big bets on the proliferation of generative AI technology, with the chipmaker’s hardware serving as the foundation.

The sharp increases in the shares of Nvidia and other Wall Street heavyweights have left people who save for their retirements through widely used S&P 500 index funds heavily exposed to the future of AI technology.

Nvidia now accounts for 7 percent of the S&P 500. Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Alphabet together make up 28 percent of the index.

“I strongly believe that AI is a greatly productive tool, but I am fairly sure that the current delivery of AI via large language models and large reasoning models are unlikely to live up to the hype,” cautioned Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners.

Co-founded in 1993 by CEO Jensen Huang, Nvidia has evolved from a niche company popular among video game enthusiasts into Wall Street’s barometer for the AI industry.

The stock’s recent rally comes after a slow first half of the year, when investor optimism about AI took a back seat to worries about tariffs and Trump’s trade dispute with Beijing.

Chinese startup DeepSeek in January triggered a selloff in global equities markets with a cut-price AI model that outperformed many Western competitors and sparked speculation that companies might spend less on high-end processors.

In November of last year, Nvidia took over the spot on the Dow Jones Industrial Average formerly occupied by chipmaker Intel, reflecting a major shift in the semiconductor industry toward AI-linked development and the graphics processing hardware pioneered by Nvidia.

Meta Poaches CEO of Ilya Sutskever’s Startup in AI Talent War

Ilya Sutskever has taken over the reins of Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the artificial intelligence startup he launched last year, after losing CEO Daniel Gross to an intensifying talent war in the industry.

Gross has joined Meta Platforms to lead its AI products division, sources told Reuters.

The development comes as tech giants such as Meta Platforms aggressively chase high-profile acquisitions and offer multi-million-dollar pay packages to attract top talent in the race to lead the next wave of artificial intelligence.

Meta had also attempted to recruit Sutskever and acquire SSI, which was most recently valued at $32 billion (roughly Rs. 2,73,402 crore), sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

“You might have heard rumors of companies looking to acquire us. We are flattered by their attention but are focused on seeing our work through,” Sutskever said in a post on X. SSI raised $1 billion (roughly Rs. 8,543 crore) in cash last year to build advanced AI systems designed to safely exceed human intelligence.

Sutskever has previously served as OpenAI’s chief scientist. He left the ChatGPT maker, which he co‑founded, after his involvement in Sam Altman’s dramatic firing and rehiring in November 2023.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched a new division, Meta Superintelligence Labs, to unify the company’s AI efforts, following setbacks with its Llama 4 model and key staff departures.

The unit will be led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-GitHub chief Nat Friedman, after Meta invested $14.3 billion (roughly Rs. 1,22,178 crore) in Scale and ramped up efforts to recruit top AI talent.

Gross and Friedman are known to be close, having co-founded the venture capital firm NFDG — named after their initials. The firm has backed high-profile startups including Safe Superintelligence, Perplexity and Figma.

Meta has offered to buy a minority stake in NFDG’s funds from limited partners through a tender offer, the sources told Reuters.

The Facebook owner did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, while NFDG could not be reached.

Apple acquired Gross’s startup, Cue, in 2013 for its predictive search and AI technology, after which Gross joined the iPhone maker as a director, overseeing machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Google’s AI Overviews Hit by EU Antitrust Complaint From Independent Publishers

Alphabet’s Google has been hit by an EU antitrust complaint over its AI Overviews from a group of independent publishers, which has also asked for an interim measure to prevent allegedly irreparable harm to them, according to a document seen by Reuters.

Google’s AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional hyperlinks to relevant webpages and are shown to users in more than 100 countries. It began adding advertisements to AI Overviews last May.

The company is making its biggest bet by integrating AI into search but the move has sparked concerns from some content providers such as publishers.

The Independent Publishers Alliance document, dated June 30, sets out a complaint to the European Commission and alleges that Google abuses its market power in online search.

“Google’s core search engine service is misusing web content for Google’s AI Overviews in Google Search, which have caused, and continue to cause, significant harm to publishers, including news publishers in the form of traffic, readership and revenue loss,” the document said.

It said Google positions its AI Overviews at the top of its general search engine results page to display its own summaries which are generated using publisher material and it alleges that Google’s positioning disadvantages publishers’ original content.

“Publishers using Google Search do not have the option to opt out from their material being ingested for Google’s AI large language model training and/or from being crawled for summaries, without losing their ability to appear in Google’s general search results page,” the complaint said.

The Commission declined to comment.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority confirmed receipt of the complaint.

Google said it sends billions of clicks to websites each day.

“New AI experiences in Search enable people to ask even more questions, which creates new opportunities for content and businesses to be discovered,” a Google spokesperson said.

The Independent Publishers Alliance’s website says it is a nonprofit community advocating for independent publishers, which it does not name.

The Movement for an Open Web, whose members include digital advertisers and publishers, and British non-profit Foxglove Legal Community Interest Company, which says it advocates for fairness in the tech world, are also signatories to the complaint.

They said an interim measure was necessary to prevent serious irreparable harm to competition and to ensure access to news.

Google said numerous claims about traffic from search are often based on highly incomplete and skewed data.

“The reality is that sites can gain and lose traffic for a variety of reasons, including seasonal demand, interests of users, and regular algorithmic updates to Search,” the Google spokesperson said.

Foxglove co-executive director Rosa Curling said journalists and publishers face a dire situation.

“Independent news faces an existential threat: Google’s AI Overviews,” she told Reuters.

“That’s why with this complaint, Foxglove and our partners are urging the European Commission, along with other regulators around the world, to take a stand and allow independent journalism to opt out,” Curling said.

The three groups have filed a similar complaint and a request for an interim measure to the UK competition authority.

The complaints echoed a US lawsuit by a U.S. edtech company which said Google’s AI Overviews is eroding demand for original content and undermining publishers’ ability to compete that have resulted in a drop in visitors and subscribers.

Baidu’s MuseStreamer AI Video Generation Model Takes on Google’s Veo 3 With Native Audio Support: Report

Baidu reportedly released a new artificial intelligence (AI) video generation model on Wednesday. As per the report, the MuseStreamer AI model can also integrate Chinese audio in the generated videos, making it the second such model after Google’s Veo 3. The tech giant claims it to be the world’s first AI model with native Chinese audio generation support. Alongside the introduction of the large language model (LLM), the company reportedly also launched a new video content creation platform dubbed HuiXiang. Notably, neither MuseStreamer nor HuiXiang is currently available outside of China.

Baidu’s MuseStreamer Can Reportedly Generate Chinese Audio

The world of AI video generation model has evolved significantly in the last two years. We have moved from models that struggled to generate people with a fixed number of fingers to LLMs which can now accurately depict realistic physics and motion. However, one area most AI players have refrained from entering was videos that also supported audio natively.

At Google I/O 2025, the tech giant became the first company to offer this capability with Veo 3, which immediately became talk of the town, leaving its biggest rival, OpenAI’s Sora, behind. The Mountain View-based tech giant recently expanded Veo 3 in all the 154 countries where the Gemini app is available, highlighting the company’s aggressive push for this tool.

However, according to a Tech in Asia report (via AI Base), Chinese tech giant Baidu has also entered the race with its MuseStream AI model. It is said to generate videos with Chinese audio, and the only model with the capability to do so. Notably, Veo 3 can only generate audio in the English language.

MuseStreamer can reportedly not only generate dialogues that are synced with the videos, it can also add sound effects and ambient noises in the videos. Baidu is said to have claimed that the model achieved a score of 89.38 percent on the VBench I2V benchmark, ranking at the top. The tech giant is pitching the LLM as a content creation tool for consumers.

Alongside the AI model, Baidu has reportedly also launched a new video content platform dubbed HuiXiang. HuiXiang is said to serve as the front-end for the AI model, where users can share prompts and generate videos. The platform currently supports 10-second-long video generations at 1080p resolution, the report stated. In comparison, Veo 3 can generate only eight-second-long videos. There is no clarity over the default aspect ratio of the video, and if users can generate videos in different aspect ratios.

Chinese Sales of Foreign Phone Makers, Including Apple’s iPhone, Drop 9.7 Percent in May

Sales of foreign-branded mobile phones in China, including those of Apple, fell 9.7 percent year-on-year in May, according to data released by a government-affiliated research company on Friday.

Calculations based on the data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) showed that May shipments of foreign-branded phones in China fell to 4.54 million handsets from the same month last year.

As the largest foreign mobile phone maker in China’s smartphone-dominated market, Apple’s performance plays a significant role in the overall data on foreign-branded phone sales in the country.

Apple has faced increased competition from domestic rivals and has cut prices to stay competitive. Chinese e-commerce platforms offered discounts of up to 2,530 yuan ($351) on Apple’s latest iPhone 16 models in May.

The CAICT data did not give specific figures for Apple.

Shipments of phones within China were down 21.8 percent year-on-year to 23.72 million handsets for the month, the data showed.
