Microsoft to Replace Blue Screen of Death With Simpler Black Error Screen Later This Year

Microsoft’s Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is slated to be discontinued, and the company has now shed some light on when the error message is getting the axe. While the company previously said it was replacing its BSOD, its successor is black and doesn’t include the text emoticon with a frown. It will also provide users with additional crash related information, which could help IT administrators quickly identify the issue with a computer after a crash.

Windows 11 to Get Black Screen of Death That Resembles Update Screen

David Weston, Microsoft VP of Enterprise and OS Security, told The Verge in an interview that Microsoft will replace the Blue Screen of Death with a new black screen on Windows 11. The redesign will be rolled out “later this summer” alongside the quick machine recovery (QMR) feature. We can expect users to see the new BSOD design before August or September, based on the timeline shared by the executive.

When the updated BSOD design is rolled out to users, they will see a much simpler design, minus the large frown emoji. We actually have a fairly good idea of what the new Black Screen of Death will look like, courtesy of Microsoft. Earlier this year, the company rolled out a green coloured error screen to replace the BSOD, which was available to Windows Insiders testers on the beta channel.

The new black screen appears to be identical to the green one shared by the company in March. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the Windows 11 update screen, with centre-aligned text telling users that the computer is restarting because of an error and the percentage that reveals the progress of the crash log collection process.

Users will also see a stop code with an error that can be shared with system administrators, while the black screen will also inform them about the process that failed (for example, it will tell users that a particular driver file failed, such as rdbss.sys).

It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time that Microsoft has announced that the BSOD warning would be changed from blue. Back in 2021, the company tested a black version of the warning message, but that version also included the text emoticon with a colon and a bracket (a frown).

The move to axe the BSOD on Windows 11 comes decades after it was introduced on Windows. A year ago, a technical glitch caused by security firm CrowdStrike impacted millions of Windows computers in an unbootable state. This prompted Microsoft to work on improving Windows security and an improved recovery process for PCs, which will make its way to users later this year.

YouTube Introduces AI-Powered Search Results Carousel, Shows a Snapshot of Suggested Videos

YouTube is adding a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature to its platform. On Thursday, the video streaming giant announced Search Results Carousel, which will show up when users search certain keywords. The new carousel will feature suggested videos in a new layout as well as a text description of the videos to help users learn more about them before beginning to watch them. The new feature will currently be exclusive to YouTube Premium subscriptions in the US. Additionally, the Google-owned platform is also expanding the conversational AI tool to some non-Premium users.

In a blog post, YouTube introduced the new AI feature. The company began testing the Search Results Carousel in April and made it available to a small subset of Premium users. It is now expanding it to a wider base of Premium users in the US.

The AI feature shows a new carousel for certain keywords when users search for shopping, travel, or things to do at a specific place. The results page will show a new layout with a large video clip at the top, followed by thumbnails of other suggested videos underneath. YouTube is also adding an AI-generated text about the query. To watch a video, users can tap on the large video clip at the top, and to see another video, they can tap on the smaller thumbnails.

Currently, the feature is only available on Android and iOS for videos in the English language. According to the YouTube experiments page, this trial period will last till July 30. The company might expand the feature to other regions after that.

Apart from this, YouTube is also expanding its conversational AI tool to some non-Premium users in the US. The feature is denoted by a sparkle icon underneath the video in the same row as Like, Share, and Download buttons. It allows users to ask questions about the video and even ask for recommendations. The chatbot is powered by Gemini. It was first introduced in April 2024 and was only available to Premium users. Notably, the feature is only available on Android devices.

Google Releases Gemma 3n Open-Source AI Model That Can Run Locally on 2GB RAM

Google released the full version of Gemma 3n, its latest open-source model in the Gemma 3 family of artificial intelligence (AI) models, on Thursday. First announced in May, the new model is designed and optimised for on-device use cases and features several new architecture-based improvements. Interestingly, the large language model (LLM) can be run locally on just 2GB of RAM. This means the model can be deployed and operated even on a smartphone, provided it comes with AI-enabled processing power.

Gemma 3n Is a Multimodal AI Model

In a blog post, the Mountain View-based tech giant announced the release of the full version of Gemma 3n. The model follows the launch of the Gemma 3 and GemmaSign models and joins the Gemmaverse. Since it is an open-source model, the company has provided its model weights as well as the cookbook to the community. The model itself is available to use under a permissive Gemma license, which allows both academic and commercial usages.

Gemma 3n is a multimodal AI model. It natively supports image, audio, video, and text inputs. However, it can only generate text outputs. It is also a multilingual model and supports 140 languages for text, and 35 languages when the input is multimodal.

Google says that Gemma 3n has a “mobile-first architecture,” which is built on Matryoshka Transformer or MatFormer architecture. It is a nested transformer, named after the Russian nesting dolls, where one fits inside another. This architecture offers a unique way of training AI models with different parameter sizes.

Gemma 3n comes in two sizes — E2B and E4B — short for effective parameters. This means, despite being five billion and eight billion parameters in size, the active parameters are just two and four billion.

This is achieved using a technique called Per-Layer Embeddings (PLE), where only the most essential parameters are required to be loaded into the fast memory (VRAM). The rest remains in the extra layer embeddings and can be handled by the CPU.

So, with the MatFormer system, the E4B variant nests the E2B model, and when the larger model is being trained, it simultaneously trains the smaller model. This gives users the convenience of either using E4B for more advanced operations or E2B for faster outputs without finding any noticeable differences in the quality of the processing or output.

Google is also letting users create custom-sized models by tweaking certain internal parts. For this, the company is releasing the MatFormer Lab tool that will let developers test different combinations to help them find the custom model sizes.

Currently, Gemma 3n is available to download via Google’s Hugging Face listing and Kaggle listing. Users can also visit Google AI Studio to try Gemma 3n. Notably, Gemma models can also be deployed directly to Cloud Run from AI Studio.
