Walmart-Backed Flipkart Turns to Videos and Livestream to Woo Indian Online Shoppers



Flipkart India, the e-commerce giant owned by Walmart, is using social videos and livestreams to convert young consumers spending a lot of time on their smartphones into loyal customers.

Using videos to showcase and sell products is one of the leading new forays at Flipkart, Neha Agrahari, a senior director at the retailer, said in an interview to Bloomberg News.

While the concept of online retailers using videos to boost sales has been around for years, Flipkart hopes this strategy will give it an edge over rivals like Amazon.com Inc. and Reliance Industries in India. The world’s most-populous country has about 650 million smartphone users — of whom over 270 million make purchases online, making it the second-largest e-retail market ahead of the US.

About 200 million users engaged with videos on Flipkart while shopping in the first half of 2025, up from 75 million a year ago, data from the retailer showed.

“Users prefer to watch a video and make a decision” when shopping, making video commerce the obvious direction to take, Agrahari said. Two in three Gen-Z users now prefer this format of shopping, with 65 percent of video and streaming engagement coming from India’s smaller cities.

The firm launched video offerings on its app about 18 months ago to promote everything from sunscreen to gadgets. It also features livestreams to answer buyers’ questions about products in real-time and let shoppers interact with influencers.

Flipkart’s foray into this segment, along with other Indian platforms like SoftBank Group-backed Meesho, follows a trend in China and other parts of Asia where top retailers routinely invest in promoting items via live videos, hiring influencers to hawk everything from lipstick to protein powders.

Video-led shopping is currently driving sales in fashion, beauty, personal care and home decor categories, Agrahari said, adding that the next move is to include electronics and fitness-related content. 

The platform is building physical studios in the Indian cities of Gurugram, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to offer “seamless” shooting and editing experience to its video creators, Agrahari said.

User engagement numbers for daily livestreaming show the strategy is paying off. The number is up 17 times compared to the previous year, according to Agrahari. The surge is boosted by product videos which include clips of users dipping t-shirts in water to see if the colors bleed and using a variety of food in kitchen appliances to test reliability.

The “stress tests” work for livestreams and viewers want to see more, she said. “We don’t mind dropping a mobile phone just to prove that it is strong enough.”

Apple Changes App Store Rules in EU to Comply with Antitrust Order



Apple on Thursday changed rules and fees in its App Store in the European Union after the bloc’s antitrust regulators ordered it to remove commercial barriers to sending customers outside the store.

Apple said developers will pay a 20 percent processing fee for purchases made via the App Store, though the fees could go as low as 13 percent for Apple’s small-business program.

Developers who send customers outside the App Store for payment will pay a minimum fee of five percent and at most 15 percent. Developers will also be able to use as many links as they wish to send users to outside forms of payment.

The changes are aimed at trying to help Apple avoid paying daily fines of five percent of its average daily worldwide revenue, or about 50 million euros ($58 million or roughly Rs. 496 crore) per day after being given 60 days to show it was in compliance with the bloc’s Digital Markets Act. Apple has already paid 500 million euro ($580 million or roughly Rs. 4,962 crore) fine levied by EU antitrust regulators in April.

“The European Commission is requiring Apple to make a series of additional changes to the App Store. We disagree with this outcome and plan to appeal,” Apple said in a statement.

In a statement, the European Commission said it will now review Apple’s changes for compliance with the Digital Markets Act.

“As part of this assessment the Commission considers it particularly important to obtain the views of market operators and interested third parties before deciding on next steps,” the Commission said in a statement.

In a statement posted on social media site X, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, which fought a protracted antitrust lawsuit with Apple, called Apple’s changes “a mockery of fair competition in digital markets. Apps with competing payments are not only taxed but commercially crippled in the App Store.”

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sweeney’s remarks.

DeepSeek R2 Launch Stalled as CEO Balks at Progress: Report



Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has not yet determined the timing of the release of its R2 model as CEO Liang Wenfeng is not satisfied with its performance, The Information reported on Thursday, citing two people with knowledge of the situation.

R2, a successor to DeepSeek’s wildly popular R1 reasoning model, was planned for release in May with goals to produce better coding and reason in languages beyond English, Reuters reported earlier this year.

Over the past several months, DeepSeek’s engineers have been working to refine R2 until Liang gives the green light for release, according to The Information.

However, a fast adoption of R2 could be difficult due to a shortage of Nvidia server chips in China as a result of US export regulations, the report said, citing employees of top Chinese cloud firms that offer DeepSeek’s models to enterprise customers.

A potential surge in demand for R2 would overwhelm Chinese cloud providers, who need advanced Nvidia chips to run AI models, the report said.

DeepSeek did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

DeepSeek has been in touch with some Chinese cloud companies, providing them with technical specifications to guide their plans for hosting and distributing the model from their servers, the report said.

Among its cloud customers currently using R1, the majority are running the model with Nvidia’s H20 chips, The Information said.

Fresh export curbs imposed by the Trump administration in April have prevented Nvidia from selling in the Chinese market its H20 chips – the only AI processors it could legally export to the country at the time.

Google Pixel Call Screening Feature Could Launch in India Soon With Support for Hindi: Report


Google Pixel phones offer support for a useful feature known as Call Screening, in select regions including the US. The company is finally working on introducing the functionality in India, nearly seven years after it was launched, according to a report. The Call Screening feature on Pixel phones will also use artificial intelligence (AI) to display smart reply suggestions during calls, which must be manually selected by the user to respond to callers. Apple is also set to introduce similar call screening features with its iOS 26 update later this year.

Call Screening on Pixel Phones Might Require Regulatory Approval

During a recent APK teardown of the Phone by Google app, Android Authority found files indicating that the company is planning to bring the feature to India. One of these is ZIP file that mentions the text “hi_in” which refers to the language (Hindi) and localisation (India), and this could be a resource that could be used by the Call Screening feature on the phone app for Google Pixel smartphones.

The publication also discovered another string called “enableIndiaManualScreeningOnlyMode” which indicates that users in India will not have access to the automated version of Call Screening, which is available in the US. Users would need to tap a Screen call button for incoming calls, then choose from various replies, if manual Call Screening is rolled out in the country.

While there’s no word from the company on plans to bring Call Screening to Pixel phones in India, the publication says that the company could be waiting for regulatory approval before the feature is rolled out. It’s also unclear whether Google will introduce the feature in English and Hindi, or whether other languages will also be supported in the future.

This isn’t the first time that Google has been spotted working on support for Call Screening. In January 2024, a user enabled the feature on a rooted OnePlus 7 running on AOSPA, a custom version of Android. The user could enable the feature after downloading a Hindi language pack on their smartphone.

Later this year, Apple is also expected to roll out a similar feature with iOS 26 that asks callers for information, allowing a user to decide whether they want to answer a call or reject it. The feature is expected to work in tandem with the Live Voicemail feature, which made its way to iPhone owners in India with the iOS 18 update.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will hold a flash sale in India soon. The state-owned telecom operator made the announcement via its social media handle while also teasing about what’s to come. The flash sale is expected to offer free data, broadband deals, or discounts to consumers. Notably, this development builds upon the recent announcement of BSNL’s 5G service in India and the start of doorstep delivery of postpaid and prepaid SIM cards.

BSNL Flash Sale Details

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), BSNL teased the flash sale in India. The accompanying video clip states, “Something big is about to land! Are you ready to experience the unexpected?” However, the date of the flash sale remains under wraps and it is only said to be “coming soon”.

The state-owned telecom operator also asked X users to guess the offers that will be available during the sale. BSNL consumers might get free data, broadband deals, or massive discounts, as per the teaser.

Notably, the BSNL flash sale comes amidst the telecom operator losing subscriber momentum in India’s telecom sector. Recent telecom subscription data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) shows a loss of 0.2 million overall subscribers in April.

Further, the data also reveals a drop of 1.8 million active BSNL subscribers in the same period.

To gain back some ground, BSNL has introduced several new initiatives. Earlier this month, the telecom operator announced its 5G service in India. Dubbed Q-5G (short for Quantum 5G), the name is said to reflect the “power, speed, and future of BSNL’s 5G network”. Additionally, it has also commenced the doorstep delivery of prepaid and postpaid SIM cards, joining private telecom operators like Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) who already offer this service.

Consumers can either get a new connection or port their existing number to BSNL, and get the SIM delivered to their homes. They are required to fill a customer registration form for self-KYC, following which the SIM will be delivered. Capcom shared snippets of Resident Evil Requiem gameplay at its Capcom Spotlight livestream on Thursday, shedding light on the survival horror title’s first and third-person perspectives. The developer talked about the game’s concept, characters, and setting during the livestream. Resident Evil Requiem was revealed at Summer Game Fest earlier this month and is set to launch in 2026.

Resident Evil 9 New Gameplay Revealed

In a five-minute ‘Creator’s Message’ overview during the Capcom Spotlight livestream, Resident Evil 9 director Koshi Nakanishi explained that the core concept for the game was “addictive fear”. The livestream showed off first-person gameplay, with the game’s protagonist Grace Ashcroft, a lighter in hand, walking through dark corridors. We also see her exploring a manor in first-person with a handgun equipped.

Nakanishi also explained the decision to go with a new protagonist and said the team had thought of bringing back Resident Evil icon Leon S. Kennedy, last seen in Resident Evil 6.

“We always thought about making Leon the protagonist, but making a horror game based around him is difficult,” Nakanishi said. “He wouldn’t jump at something like a bucket falling. No one wants to see Leon scared by every little thing. So he’s actually quite a bad match for horror.”

Resident Evil: Requiem will also allow players to switch between first and third-person perspectives. Producer Masato Kumazawa said the first-person camera brings “tense, realistic” gameplay, while the third-person perspective favours a more action-oriented approach.

“Our analysis of recent gameplay trends in the series revealed that many players tend to engage with either first-person or third-person titles exclusively,” Kumazawa said in an interview published on the PlayStation Blog after the livestream. “With that in mind, we’ve included both perspectives in RE9, driven by the desire for all Resident Evil fans to enjoy the latest installment.”

Resident Evil 9 will feature FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft as the protagonist, who returns to Racoon City to investigate a series of mysterious deaths. The horror title is set for launch across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X on February 27, 2026. It is currently available to wishlist on PlayStation Store and Steam.

Google Launches Doppl, a New App That Lets You Try-On Outfits Virtually


Google launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) app on Thursday that allows users to virtually try on different outfits. Dubbed Doppl, it is an experimental app by Google Labs which was originally conceptualised to be a feature within AI Mode in Search. However, it appears that the Mountain View-based tech giant is now considering creating a standalone experience for it. With this app, users can just upload a full-length image of themselves, and the underlying AI model will process the body shape and accurately superimpose different clothing items on them.

Doppl Is Currently Only Available in the US

In a blog post, the tech giant announced the launch of the new app. At Google I/O 2025, the company announced several new AI features for its Shopping product while integrating it deeper into the Search experience. One such feature was virtual try-on, which used an AI to let people see themselves in different outfits.

The idea behind the app is to let people see themselves in the apparel they’re planning to buy, so that they can make an informed decision on whether they want to purchase it or not. This solves the age-old dilemma of not knowing whether a shirt would look as good on you as it does on the model.

This is also not the first foray of Google in this direction. In 2023, the company introduced an AI feature which showed clothes on a wide range of real models to help users see how the item looks on someone with a similar body shape.

Doppl now makes that endeavour more personalised as users can just upload a full-length image of themselves and the outfit, and see how it would look on them. At I/O, Google said the feature is powered by a custom fashion-based image generation model that understands the human body and how clothes fold, stretch, and drape on different bodies.

One cool aspect of the app is its usability. Users are not limited to the options available on online shopping websites, and can also upload an image of an outfit of their friend, something they found at a local store, or even a social media image.

Currently, Doppl is available on iOS and Android in the US. The company has not mentioned if it plans to expand it to other regions.
