Microsoft, OpenAI Said to Be Dueling Over Artificial General Intelligence

Microsoft and OpenAI are at odds over a contractual provision related to artificial general intelligence, The Information reported on Wednesday.

Under the current terms, when OpenAI achieves AGI, Microsoft’s access to such a technology would be void. Microsoft wants OpenAI to remove that clause but so far OpenAI has refused, the report said.

“We have a long-term, productive partnership that has delivered amazing AI tools for everyone. Talks are ongoing and we are optimistic we will continue to build together for years to come,” OpenAI and Microsoft said in a joint statement emailed to Reuters.

The report comes at a time when one of the most pivotal partnerships in the field of AI is under strain.

OpenAI needs Microsoft’s approval to complete its transition into a public-benefit corporation. But the two have not been able to agree on details even after months of negotiations, according to sources.

Microsoft partnered with OpenAI in 2019, investing $1 billion (roughly Rs. 8,581 crore) to support the startup’s development of AI technologies on its Azure cloud platform.

Tesla’s Robotaxi Peppered with Driving Mistakes in Texas Tests

A first public test of robotaxis by Tesla in Austin, Texas led to multiple traffic problems and driving issues, videos from company-selected riders showed over the first few days.

Chief Executive Elon Musk has tied Tesla’s financial future to self-driving technology, and with Tesla sales down, the stakes are high. He said Tesla would roll out the service to other US cities later this year and predicted “millions of Teslas” operating “fully autonomously” by the second half of next year.

The Tesla fans invited to the trial were strongly supportive and posted videos of hours of trouble-free driving, but issues drew questions from federal road safety regulators and auto safety experts.

Issues included Tesla robotaxis entering the wrong lane, dropping passengers off in the middle of multiple-lane roads or at intersections, sudden braking, speeding and driving over a curb.

In one instance, a robotaxi drove into a lane meant for oncoming traffic for about six seconds. It had pulled into an intersection in its left-turn lane with its turn blinker on. Then the steering wheel wobbled momentarily, and instead of turning it proceeded straight into the lane meant for oncoming traffic, prompting a honk from a car behind it.

In another incident, the car suddenly braked with no obstruction apparent in the video. The passenger jerked forward and their belongings were thrown to the floor. In a third video, taken from another vehicle, a robotaxi abruptly stopped twice in the middle of the road while passing police vehicles with flashing lights.

Tesla is conducting the test with human safety monitors in the front passenger seat. A fourth video showed the safety monitor hitting a button to stop the robotaxi when a delivery truck in front of it started backing up.

“This is awfully early to have a bunch of videos of erratic and poor driving,” said Philip Koopman, a Carnegie Mellon University computer-engineering professor and autonomous-technology expert. “I was not expecting as many videos of problematic driving on the very first day,” he said. Tesla is testing about 10 to 20 robotaxis, which are standard Model Ys with advanced software, and has been giving rides since Sunday afternoon.

Reuters was able to independently verify the locations of at least 11 videos showing issues. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

A City of Austin spokesperson said officials are aware of the Tesla issues documented on social media and that “when a potential legal or safety concern is brought to our attention, we promptly share it with the company.” The spokesperson added that the police department is “actively collaborating with Tesla” to ensure officers can safely interact with the robotaxis.

Caught on Camera

The incidents caught on camera did not involve accidents, and one expert said some reflected a decision to focus on safety.

“So far so good. It handled the situations very well and likely better than even good drivers,” Alain Kornhauser, Princeton University professor of operations research and financial engineering, said by email. He added that it would be more dangerous to drive at less than the speed of prevailing traffic, for instance.

Tesla’s experiment is unusually public. Other companies faced similar issues: Alphabet’s Waymo and General Motors’ Cruise had their own share of traffic mishaps after showing up on Austin streets. City officials logged dozens of instances over the past two years where residents and authorities reported that robotaxis blocked traffic by stopping in the middle of roads, failed to respond to police directions and could not deal with emergency vehicles and road closures.

A serious accident involving a pedestrian in 2023 led Cruise to shut down last year. Waymo is the only robotaxi service in the US to ferry paying customers without a human backup driver or in-car safety monitor. It started offering rides to the general public through Uber in Austin earlier this year.

Musk for years has failed to deliver on promises that self-driving Teslas are just around the corner. Tesla rolled out the service for a flat fee of $4.20 (roughly Rs. 360) to a limited number of handpicked riders. The service is not available to the broader public and the robotaxis operate in a limited area, and avoid difficult intersections and bad weather.

Riders were rarely bothered much by driving issues. Farzad Mesbahi, a former Tesla program manager, and his co-passenger hit the “drop off early” option during a ride. The vehicle stopped in an intersection with a stoplight, his video showed. They exit quickly and walk to the sidewalk. “The car should have known to not stop there,” Mesbahi is heard saying after the ride. “Opportunities for improvement,” the co-passenger says.

That is an example “most companies would not be comfortable with,” said Kara Kockelman, a professor of transportation engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, adding that she was surprised by the traffic mistakes.

“Dropping off people in the middle of a six-lane road or edge of a busy intersection when the traffic is going in the opposite direction is pretty dangerous. They definitely did not want to do this or be caught on camera,” she said.

OnePlus Expands Doorstep Pickup and Drop Service for Repairs to More Cities in India

OnePlus on Thursday announced the expansion of its doorstep pickup and drop service in India. It will now cover more than 19,000 PIN codes across the country, enabling more customers to get their OnePlus devices repaired without leaving their homes. With this initiative, the China-based OEM aims to strengthen its customer service facilities, especially in tier 2 and tier 3 Indian cities. Furthermore, the OnePlus Service Camp has been introduced, enabling out-of-warranty devices to undergo select repairs without incurring service charges.

OnePlus Doorstep Pick and Drop Service Expansion

In a press note, OnePlus stated that its pickup and drop service now covers over 19,000 PIN codes in India. The company’s customer service experience is claimed to be backed by a multi-channel service. It provides direct assistance through dedicated call centres, email-based service channels, real-time live chat, and verified support on WhatsApp.

To request the pickup and drop service, you need to:

  1. Sign in with your registered account on the OnePlus website
  2. Fill in the service request, check the service charges and repair costs, and submit
  3. Use the pickup service to ship the device to the service centre
  4. The device will be repaired post-inspection. Collect it from your doorstep once delivered

The company advises users to back up their OnePlus device before sending it in for repairs to avoid the potential risk of data loss.

Notably, the expansion of the service framework is a result of community-driven improvements and feedback received from users across the country, according to the company. It is an initiative under Project Starlight, a three-phased plan, announced in December 2024.

“This customer service expansion is a vital part of our long-term vision for India, empowering more users with timely, transparent, and dependable support”, Robin Liu, CEO of OnePlus India, said in a statement.

OnePlus said it is focusing on delivering a better customer service experience, improving durability, and addressing display and other malfunctions that may occur due to challenging climatic conditions. Under Project Starlight, the China-based OEM aims to make an investment of Rs. 6,000 crore to accelerate its customer service efforts in the country.

OnePlus Service Camp

In addition to the expansion of the pickup and drop service to more cities in India, the company also announced the OnePlus Service Camp. It runs until June 30 across authorised OnePlus service centres, where users can receive a free device health check-up and software updates. The service camp is said to cover all OnePlus smartphones. Further, those with out-of-warranty devices can take advantage of zero service charges on select repairs.

The company emphasised that it is working towards expanding its service network to more than 400 cities across all 28 states in India within the next five years.

Gemini Live’s Real-Time Captions Feature Is Now Rolling Out to All Users

Gemini Live on Android and iOS is getting a real-time captions feature. The feature will show live captions of whatever Gemini says on the screen. This feature will allow users to have a two-way conversation with Gemini Live without needing to hear its voice. It can be useful when users want to have a hands-free conversation with the chatbot but do not want the AI to respond back verbally (if users are outdoors or in a crowded location). Google has also provided options to customise the size of the font and how the captions appear on the screen.

Gemini Live Conversations Now Come With Subtitles

Near the beginning of this month, several netizens claimed to have seen a new captions feature in Gemini Live. The Mountain View-based tech giant was likely testing the feature with a small subset of users. It appears that the company is now rolling it out to all users globally. First spotted by 9to5Google, users can now see a square icon on the top-right side of the Gemini Live interface, which represents the feature.

gemini live captions2 Gemini Live captions

This is how real-time captions appear on Gemini Live

Gadgets 360 staff members were able to spot the feature on both Android and iOS devices. The feature works the same on both operating systems. Once Gemini Live has been turned on, users can tap the square icon to either enable or disable real-time captions. Alternatively, if the device’s volume is turned all the way down, Gemini Live automatically suggests that users turn on captions. Earlier, Gemini Live would not open unless the volume was at a level audible to the user.

When turned on, real-time captions appear near the bottom of the screen in two lines. It only shows what Gemini says in that moment, and not the older conversation. To view the entire transcript, users must first end the session. Interestingly, captions also work when users share their screen or use the live video feature via Gemini Live. While in the video mode, the caption appears at the top of the screen.

On Android, Gemini users also have the option to customise captions. A new settings option is available as “Caption preferences.” Tapping on it opens a new page where users can find menu options to change the language, text size, and caption style. The latter lets users change how the captions appear on the screen.

Apart from providing standard options, such as black text on white background and white text on black background, it also lets users manually select the font style, text colour, background colour, text and background opacity, and more. We are not seeing any customisation options on iOS.

Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.1 Update With Bug Fixes, June 2025 Security Patch Rolling Out for Pixel Devices

Google on Wednesday rolled out the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.1 update to developers and beta testers. Initially available on Pixel devices, it builds upon the previous release of the QPR1 Beta 1.1 update that was issued earlier this month. As per the Mountain View-based tech giant, it carries fixes for various issues reported by Pixel users with the preceding firmware. This includes a patch for a bug that caused the back button on Android to fail intermittently and a launcher crash when swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.1 Update Compatibility

Google states all phones enrolled in the Android Beta for Pixel programme are compatible and will be offered Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.1 as an over-the-air (OTA) update. The following handsets are included:

  • Google Pixel 9 Series
  • Google Pixel 9a
  • Google Pixel 8 Series
  • Google Pixel Tablet
  • Google Pixel Fold
  • Google Pixel 7 Series
  • Google Pixel 6 Series

You can check for the update on your Pixel by navigating to Settings > System > Software update > System update > Check for updates.

Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.1 Update: What’s New

As per Google’s release notes, the new Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.1 update fixes an issue where the back button on an Android device failed to function. This issue was reported across multiple apps, including WhatsApp, App Vault, and device settings. One user said that they had to press the back button again for it to work, while another stated that it required an app restart.

There’s also a fix for a launcher crash issue that occurred when swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Google says two other bugs have also been patched. The first resulted in the Approve button in the Device Admin settings becoming transparent and invisible, whereas the second issue caused the lock screen sound to play even when the toggle was switched off.

In addition to bug fixes, the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.1 update brings the June 2025 security patch. It patches 16 vulnerabilities discovered in various sub-components, ranging from moderate to critical in severity.

Google Introduces Gemini CLI Open-Source AI Agent for Coding, Available to Developers for Free

Google introduced its new artificial intelligence (AI) command-line interface tool, dubbed Gemini CLI, on Wednesday. The tool acts as an AI agent and can not only assist developers with their day-to-day coding tasks but can also autonomously complete actions. Since the tool is designed to work directly in the terminal, developers do not have to open a separate window or app to access this feature. Gemini CLI is currently available in preview and can be accessed by anyone for free. The open-source tool is currently being hosted on GitHub.

Google Releases Gemini CLI to Compete With OpenAI

In a blog post, the Mountain View-based tech giant announced the release of Gemini CLI in preview. The command line tool comes two months after OpenAI launched Codex CLI, a similar tool. Google’s offering, however, also comes integrated with Gemini Code Assist, and access to Gemini CLI is entirely free. Those interested in trying out the open-source tool can do so from the GitHub listing.

There are some caveats. While Gemini CLI itself is free, users will only get to use Gemini Code Assist features based on their subscription plan. The tool also has its rate limits. Currently, Google is offering 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day. However, this should suffice for most developers unless it is used for large enterprise-grade projects.

Gemini CLI is powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, featuring a context window of one million tokens. The tool is available with the permissive Apache 2.0 license, which allows for both academic and commercial usages. To use it, people can log in with a personal Google account and get a free Gemini Code Assist license.

Additionally, professional developers who either need to run multiple agents simultaneously or want to use specific AI models can use a Google AI Studio or Vertex AI key to get billed based on their usage.

Apart from offering help in writing code, debugging issues, and organising projects with natural language prompts, Gemini CLI also comes with in-built tools that allow users to ground prompts with Google Search, enable Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect with external data hubs, and even generate images and videos via the company’s Veo and Imagen models.
