Vera C. Rubin Observatory Unveils First Images, Hints at Universe’s Dynamic Secrets Ahead

From a mountaintop in Chile, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory has taken the first public images of the cosmos, which represent the start of the observatory’s 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), which it will capture each and every night. With the world’s largest digital camera, this new observatory will sweep the entire southern sky every three nights. In its first image, it covered 10 million galaxies in the universe and showed only one section, 0.05%, of the roughly 40 billion celestial objects that it will ultimately observe. The scientific world has been abuzz with speculation about discoveries to come.

Rubin Observatory Captures 54M-Light-Year Virgo Cluster, Unveils Hidden Galaxies and Star Birth Regions

As per a report by Space.com, the picture shows the Virgo cluster, which is some 54 million light years away. The observatory’s 8.4-metre Simonyi Survey Telescope and advanced LSST Science Pipelines software enabled the capture of breathtaking detail across a region 45 times the size of the full Moon. The scientists have called the images groundbreaking, and the observatory is expected to be able to tell them in real time about variable stars, supernovas, and even asteroids.

Rubin’s sensitivity to changes in brightness, scientists hope, will allow it to catch transient cosmic events, such as stars that die and planets that cross in front of other stars. Such sightings will enable measurements of cosmic distances and provide vital data for investigations of dark matter and dark energy — two of the most mysterious and poorly understood forces in the universe.

Preview images, such as the views of the Trifid and Lagoon Nebulae, showed spectacular structures created by star birth inside dense cloud cores. The observatory’s unique capability to produce continuous wide-field images promises a dynamic, decade-long “movie of the universe”.

With LSST now launching, astronomers are bristling with excitement to see what comes from the survey that might topple our best understanding of the universe. The researchers involved have mentioned that they are “beyond excited” about what they might learn in the next few years.

Grok to Get AI-Powered File Editor Feature With Spreadsheet Support, Tipster Claims

Grok, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by xAI, might soon get a file editor feature. A tipster claimed that the Elon Musk-owned AI firm is working on this feature, which might support different file types, including spreadsheets. It is said to enable users to chat with Grok and ask it to make changes to various documents. If the leaked information is accurate, it can significantly improve the usability of the chatbot. Interestingly, the leak comes at a time when xAI is expected to release the Grok 3.5 AI model.

Grok’s File Editing Feature Said to Support Voice Commands

Independent app researcher Nima Owji shared a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) revealing the under-development feature. The tipster also shared a screenshot of the feature, which shows a Grok side panel added to a spreadsheet.

In the post, Owji said that xAI is currently working on this file editor feature, which will also support spreadsheets. “You can talk to Grok and ask it to assist you at the same time you’re editing the files,” the tipster added. Notably, he did not mention the other file types that would be supported by this feature.

Grok made a late entry to the AI chatbot space after being launched in November 2023, nearly 12 months after the arrival of ChatGPT and more than six months after the entry of Gemini (previously known as Bard), Copilot and Claude.

As a result, the Musk and xAI project has also played catch-up with its competitors. In April, Grok finally received computer vision, multilingual audio support, and a web search tool, features that were previously added by rival services. Similarly, the ability to edit files is already available on other AI platforms.

If the leaked information is true, the ability to collaboratively edit files will take Grok ahead of competitors such as ChatGPT and Claude. Currently, only Gemini offers this feature to its paid Workspace users. But the specifics of how the feature will be implemented remain speculative until xAI makes an official announcement.

Notably, xAI is also expected to release Grok 3.5 large language model (LLM) soon. As such, this file editing capability could be part of the new AI model.

YouTube Music Adds Offline Lyrics Support for Downloaded Songs

YouTube Music has been silently updated with a new feature that allows users to view lyrics when offline. Users who have downloaded tracks with lyrics on YouTube Music will now be able to see them when their phone doesn’t have an internet connection. The Alphabet owned music streaming platform added the functionality ahead of rivals Spotify and Apple Music, which currently do not display lyrics when a device is offline. The service previously added support for voting on songs in collaborative playlists.

YouTube Music Now Shows Lyrics Automatically for Downloaded Songs

A Reddit user recently discovered that lyrics for downloaded tracks were available on YouTube Music for Android (via Android Authority). There’s no mention of the feature in the release notes for recent versions of the app via the Play Store, and the feature appears to have been silently enabled by the company.

Gadgets 360 was unable to confirm that the feature was working on YouTube Music for Android, even after installing the latest version of the app. When it is available, users will be able to tap the Lyrics tab to view lyrics for a song while offline. Meanwhile, user reports suggest that the feature is currently unsupported on YouTube Music for iOS.

It’s worth noting that while rivals Spotify and Apple Music also let users view lyrics while listening to songs, both of these platforms have yet to add support for offline lyrics. The feature can come in handy while listening to music when you don’t have an internet connection. These include long haul flights, or passing through an area that has poor network coverage while taking the metro.

Last month, YouTube announced that it was adding support for “voting” in playlists. This feature is available in collaborative playlists, which allow users to create playlists together, and it adds new upvote and downvote buttons to each song in a playlist.

Once this feature is enabled on a user’s account, they can vote on tracks in a collaborative playlist, and it will move the track to the top or the bottom of the list. The ability to vote on these playlists is currently available on YouTube Music and the main YouTube app, according to the company.

Google May Soon Let Gemini Interact With WhatsApp, Phone App on Android Even If Feature Is Disabled

Google might have sent an email to some Android users on Tuesday highlighting that soon, the Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant will interact with several on-device apps, whether the feature is turned on or not. Several users have shared screenshots of these emails on social media posts, where the Mountain View-based tech giant has highlighted that this change will be automatically rolled out starting July 7. The language of the email has also caused confusion, as the company has mentioned users can turn off the feature, but has not shared how to do so.

Several Netizens Claim to Have Received the Email From Google

Tipster CID shared screenshots of the email on X (formerly known as Twitter), revealing Google’s planned changes post July 7. Several other users have also shared screenshots of these emails on social media posts and forums, which were first spotted by Android Authority. Notably, Gadgets 360 staff members have not received any such email.

As per the posts, the email is titled, “We’ve made it easier for Gemini to interact with your device.” It goes on to explain that the company is updating how its AI assistant for Android devices interacts with some of the apps. These include the Phone app, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities.

The concerning part of the email mentions that Gemini will be able to interact with these apps “whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off.” Gemini Apps is the rebranded name for extensions that allow the AI assistant to perform some tasks on some first-party and third-party apps. So far, users have been able to visit the Apps settings in Gemini to toggle on and off the apps they want to connect with the chatbot.

Google’s phrasing makes it appear that users will not have a choice in whether Gemini can collect data from these apps or not, raising privacy concerns. While Google Assistant could also do the same, the risk with AI models accessing the data is that it is unclear how the data may be processed, stored, and later used by the company.

Later in the email, the company does go on to say that if users do not want to use these features, they can turn them off in the Apps settings page. This part is confusing for two reasons. First, it directly contradicts what Google said in the previous paragraph, and second, the company did not share how users can turn the feature off.

As mentioned above, currently, the only way to disable access to these apps is by visiting the Apps page inside the Gemini app. However, the company has mentioned that the feature will work irrespective of this.

There is a possibility that this email was sent only to beta testers who might receive new ways to disable these interaction capabilities with the July 7 update, but we cannot confirm this due to a lack of information. The tech giant has not made any official announcement regarding the same.
