Green Rooftops Could Help Cities Like Shanghai Filter Out Tons of Microplastics from Rainwater

The research team at Tongji University collaborated with a colleague from the Shanghai Academy of Landscape Architecture Science and Planning, finding that growing plants on roofs can be an effective method for removing microplastics from the air. In this study, published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, the team measured the amounts of microplastics on the plants and soil in which they grow. Previous research has shown that growing plants on roofs can reduce heating and cooling bills, as well as clear the air surrounding them of pollution.

Testing Plant Types and Microplastic Exposure

As per the study, the research team found whether the growing plants have microplastics or not. To know this, they planted two different types of plants, which are used on rooftops in Shanghai. Further, they introduced microplastic particles in the air near those plants at common levels found in Shanghai. The researchers then introduced simulated rains, after measuring the microplastic levels in the soil and on the plants.

Green Roofs Trap the Majority of Microplastics from Rain

What they found was that the plants did a great job of pulling the microplastics from the rain by growing through the air above them. The green roof system created by researchers consisted of a soil layer, which pulled the microplastics from the rainwater that falls on it to around 97.5%.

Microplastics Mostly Captured in Soil, Not on Leaves

And after conducting the measurements through multiple rains, the team came to know that the percentage of microplastics removed further increased with the intensity of the rainfall.

The researchers found that leaves were collecting less of the microplastics, but the bulk was deposited in the soil in a better way, rather than in a fibre-like shape.

Shanghai’s Green Roof Potential to Capture Microplastics

The team noted that Shanghai currently has only 38.33 million square feet of roof occupied by vegetation. However, based on their findings, they suggest, it is possible that Shanghai could capture around 56.2 metric tons of microplastic every year if the rooftops of all the buildings were made green.

Top Five ChatGPT Prompts Every Student Should Know

ChatGPT is a generalistics large language model (LLM), which means that it can be used for a wide range of tasks, and can be helpful to a large demographic of users. While many believe it to be a useful tool for professionals, students can also use it to better learn about complex topics and find ways to manage their time, especially before an important exam. Here, we have provided the top five ChatGPT prompts for students that is sure to assist them in their daily studies.

Disclaimer: Before going any further, we should highlight that ChatGPT, or for that matter any other AI chatbot, should not be used to cheat in assignments or homework. Doing so will only harm the cognitive ability of students, and ensure that they do not learn critical thinking and other skills that will help them throughout their life. The idea is to use the chatbot as an assistant to further the educational growth, and not to use it as their proxy.

With that being said, the following prompts go beyond the typical “summarise this text” and “find key points from this essay/chapter,” and converts the AI tool into a tutor that helps students build understanding of different topics and develop skillsets to master different subjects.

Top Five ChatGPT Prompts for Students

Prompt to Help Improve Your Understanding of a Topic

Prompt: Act as a subject matter expert and challenge my understanding of [topic] by asking increasingly difficult questions, one at a time.

Why this works: This prompt turns ChatGPT into a tutor who asks viva-style questions to not only test students’ comprehension but also to reveal weak spots. In case students come across questions that are too difficult, they can also ask the AI to tell them the answer and explain it.

Prompt to Help Develop Critical Thinking

Prompt: Compare and contrast the arguments for and against [controversial topic] using evidence from academic sources. Present both sides neutrally.

Why this works: This will help students develop essay structure, balanced reasoning, and awareness about how to use citations. This is also useful to develop a neutral understanding of a subjective topic.

Prompt to Learn Mathematical Concepts Using the Socratic Method

Prompt: Help me solve this problem step-by-step by asking guiding questions at each stage. Don’t give me the answer directly. Wait for my response before moving to the next step. Here’s the problem: [insert problem]

Why this works: Also known as scaffolded learning, this prompt will guide students step by step and nudge them in the right direction without providing the answer outright. This will help them understand how mathematical concepts work instead of just memorising formulas and theorems.

Prompt for Study Plans and Time Management

Prompt: “I have 6 hours of study time a day. Design a schedule based on the Pomodoro Technique and space repetition for [subjects/topics].”

Why this works: This prompt uses two research-backed productivity techniques develop a study plan that works with students’ goals and requirements. Students can further improve the prompt by adding their daily schedule, any weak points, and deadlines.

Prompt to Write Better Essays and Research Papers

Prompt: Simulate a peer-review of this abstract, pointing out flaws in logic, clarity, or structure.

Why this works: This ChatGPT prompt mimics real academic process and uses the chatbot as a critical, structured reader to help students improve the logic, clarity, and structure of the paper. It also helps them catch any blind spot as well as makes them more accepting of constructive criticism.

Rubin Observatory to Unveil First Cosmic Images with World’s Largest Digital Camera

A new era of cosmic wonder dawns as Vera C. Rubin Observatory receives first celestial images at live reveal on June 23, 2025. Perched atop Cerro Pachón in the Chilean Andes, this observatory has the world’s largest digital camera — an impressive 3,200-megapixel contraption. The livestream, which is called “First Look: Images from the Rubin Observatory LSST Camera”, is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT) and will be simulcast on Space.com and the observatory’s official YouTube and event channels.

Rubin Observatory Set to Revolutionize Sky Surveys with First Images and LSST Mission

According to a Space.com report, the Rubin Observatory is a project of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of Energy (DOE) and is tasked with conducting the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Over the next decade, the telescope will repeatedly photograph the full southern sky, building up colossal time-lapse datasets that will enable scientists to study everything from the motion of asteroids to supernovae and the evolution of galaxies.

Its massive 8.4-metre primary mirror and large field of view are designed to detect transient cosmic events. The observatory is also forecast to provide substantial gains in the data’s potential to explain dark matter and dark energy — key scientific goals from the work of the observatory’s namesake, astronomer Vera Rubin.

Full operations will not begin until later this year, but the release of the next image is considered a milestone in the telescope’s commissioning process. These first pictures won’t just demonstrate what its instruments can do; they will also excite the scientific community and the general public.
Like the celebrated reveal of the James Webb Space Telescope’s first light, this debut marks a turning point. With eyes now turned skyward, the Rubin Observatory is ready to deliver the universe in unprecedented resolution.

Tesla Set to Open India Showrooms in July With Made-in-China EVs

Tesla Inc. is set to open its first showrooms in India in July, people familiar with the discussions said, kicking off formal operations in the world’s third-biggest automobile market as the Elon Musk-led firm hunts for growth amid falling sales in Europe and China.

The electric vehicle giant’s first set of cars have arrived in the country — Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs shipped from Tesla’s China factory, according to the people, who asked not to be identified as the information is private, as well as documents seen by Bloomberg News. The Model Y is the world’s largest selling electric car.

Tesla is set to open its first showroom in Mumbai as early as mid July, which will be followed by one in New Delhi, according to the people. It has also imported Supercharger components, car accessories, merchandise and spares from the US, China and the Netherlands, the documents show.

The debut will end a years-long on-again, off-again saga over Tesla’s entry into India – a market Musk has long eyed but held back from entering due to disagreements over tariffs and local manufacturing. The breakthrough in bringing Tesla to India comes after Musk met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US in February.

Bloomberg News reported in February that Tesla was set to ship a few thousand cars to a port near Mumbai.

Tesla spokespersons did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on opening of the India showrooms and the preparations underway.

Premium Price

Five Model Y vehicles have already arrived in Mumbai from Tesla’s Shanghai factory, according to documents reviewed by Bloomberg News. The cars were declared at 2.77 million rupees ($31,988 or roughly Rs. 27.7 lakh) and attracted more than 2.1 million rupees (roughly Rs. 21 lakh) in import duties — a levy that’s consistent with India’s 70 percent tariff on fully-built imported cars under $40,000 (roughly Rs. 34.6 lakh) plus surcharges, the documents show.

The model is expected to go on sale for more than $56,000 (roughly Rs. 48.5 lakh) before taxes and insurance, though Tesla will determine the final sticker price based on its margin and positioning strategy, according to people familiar with the plans.

That compares with an ex-showroom price of $44,990 (roughly Rs. 39 lakh) for the same model in the US, which sells for $37,490 (roughly Rs. 32.5 lakh) once tax credits are applied.

The premium price tag will likely be a major hurdle to Tesla’s plans as the automaker will need to convince value-driven consumers to open their wallets. EVs account for just over five percent of new passenger vehicle sales in India, but premium cars still represent less than two percent of the market, data with Indian government’s vehicle registration portal show.

Beefing Up

The company hasn’t appointed a new country head following the departure of Prashanth Menon, but is beefing up hiring across charging, retail and policy teams, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Model Y imports represent an initial foray into the market and Tesla plans to expand its presence, including offering more models.

It’s leasing warehouse space in Karnataka, in India’s south, and is adding more in Gurugram, outside New Delhi, the people said.

Tesla executives from other countries are making weekly visits, the people said, to the Mumbai and New Delhi showrooms, which are in high-profile, luxury business precincts in an effort to attract affluent shoppers.
