Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro Review: Your Work Companion

Samsung’s Galaxy Book range has been considered one of the perfect MacBook alternatives thanks to its portability and versatile character. Last year’s Galaxy Book 4 Pro 360 even won our in-house NDTV Gadgets 360 awards in the Best 2-in-1 laptop category. This year, Samsung has taken the all-new Galaxy Book 5 series a step further by incorporating Galaxy AI features into the mix.

The range comes in three SKUs – Galaxy Book 5 Pro, Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360, and Galaxy Book 5 360 – all packing Intel’s Lunar Lake processor. Talking about the prices, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro launched in India at a starting price of Rs. 1,31,990, while the cost of the Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 model starts at Rs. 1,55,990. The Galaxy Book 5 360, the cheapest in the range, launched at a starting price of Rs. 1,14,990.

I got the Galaxy Book 5 Pro for this review. And what do you get out of the box? A reliable package that should suit all work demands and packs in an excellent display and decent speaker setup for your multimedia needs. But does it beat others in the same price segment? Let me answer that in this review.

Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro Design and Display: Designed for everyday productivity

  • Weight – 1.23 KG (14-inch)
  • Thickness – 11.6mm
  • Screen resolution – 2880×1800 pixels WQXGA+ AMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate

The Galaxy Book 5 Pro is Samsung’s latest offering in the premium, thin-and-light category. At 1.23 kilograms, the 14-inch machine is lightweight, prioritising mobility for target consumers. Measuring just 11.6mm, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro can slip into some of the smallest backpacks. It comes in a single Grey colour option, and it is minimalistic in design. It should be loved by those who love muted colours.

The laptop weighs 1.23 kilograms

The retail box includes a Type-C to C cable alongside a charging adapter, and I appreciated the overall packaging of the Galaxy Book 5 Pro due to its understated branding. At first glance, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro feels like a premium laptop and means business. The lid is easy to open with just one hand, and the metal finish provides a solid feel. Compared to the 16-inch version of the Galaxy Book 5 Pro, the 14-inch is way easier for portability and on-the-go tasks. While reviewing the laptop, I had the opportunity to use it while on the move in the Delhi metro, and it was easy to handle during the commute.

The hinge feels solid as well and doesn’t wobble while typing. Overall, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro (non-360-degree) model has been designed with work professionals in mind, and it doesn’t disappoint.

One of the reasons people would prefer this laptop is its display. The 14-inch 3K AMOLED display is top-notch and flagship-grade. Samsung is known for its displays, and the Galaxy Book 5 Pro doesn’t disappoint either. The display supports touch, which is an added advantage at this price point – a feature that’s missing in the entire MacBook lineup. To top it off, Samsung has added a 120Hz refresh rate, making the display on the Galaxy Book 5 Pro ideal for multimedia. It also has an anti-reflective coating, which means using it under direct sunlight will be smooth. The panel is bright, the text appears sharp, and colours pop – making the Galaxy Book 5 Pro an ideal choice for binge-watching or browsing the internet for your work assignments. The bezels around the display, though, are still same as Galaxy Book 4 Pro.

samsung galaxy book 5 pro review2 galaxy-book-5-pro

At 11.6mm, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro is slim

Long story short, if you’re in the market for a laptop that offers a solid design and uncompromising display quality, then look no further than the Galaxy Book 5 Pro.

Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro Keyboard, Touchpad, speakers, and webcam

  • Keyboard – Full-size with numeric key (Backlit keyboard)
  • Touchpad – Clickpad
  • Speakers – Quad Speakers (woofer max 5 Wx2 and tweeter 3.3Wx2) with Dolby Atmos
  • Webcam – 2-megapixel (1080p FHD) camera, Internal dual array digital mic

Moving on to the keyboard experience, the Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro features a full-size keyboard on the 14-inch model. The 16-inch model, on the other hand, offers a number pad to the right of the keyboard, thanks to the additional real estate. It provides a white backlight that can be adjusted and even turned off. For typing, the keyboard feels nice thanks to good key travel, although it isn’t as good as some of the thicker models available on the market. For example, Lenovo’s ThinkPad models pack a better keyboard.

The trackpad area is huge, and there’s enough area to rest your palm while typing. The trackpad is nice, offering quick action and not getting in the way of typing – extra brownie points for this.

The 14-inch model gets an AMOLED 3K display with a 120Hz refresh rate

Samsung says that the Galaxy Book 5 Pro features a quad-speaker setup, which is sufficient for streaming or watching videos on YouTube in a medium-sized room. It also features Dolby Atmos, which is reassuring. However, due to the laptop’s slim profile, the audio output lacks bass, although it is loud, and I had no issues with clarity. I guess manufacturers have to compromise on some aspects in order to keep devices slim.

Talking about the webcam, the 2-megapixel camera is decent for work calls, and you also get additional tools from Samsung to enhance the quality. I wish Samsung offered a physical shutter to disable the webcam – it could have been a neat addition for privacy. It is one of the best webcams available in this price bracket and is significantly better than what Macs offer at the same price.

The microphone on the Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro is great for meetings and can handle ambient noise in the background.

Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro Performance: Matches everyday needs

  • Processor – Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor (Series 2)
  • RAM and storage – 16GB RAM and 512GB
  • Supports Copilot (Dedicated key)
  • Graphic – Intel Arc 140V GPU (8GB)
  • Ports – 1xHDMI 2.1, 2xThunderbolt 4, 1xUSB3.2, MicroSD Multi-media Card Reader, and 1xHeadphone out/Mic-in Combo

The Galaxy Book 5 Pro is an ideal everyday companion, meaning it can withstand all that you throw at it related to your workflows, whether it’s multitasking, multiple tabs in the browser, a bit of Photoshop editing, or more such tasks. The Intel Core Ultra Series 2 (Lunar Lake) processors are renowned for their task mastery for these purposes.

The laptop gets a Copilot+PC experience

However, the moment you try graphic-intensive AAA titles, you see the Galaxy Book 5 Pro stuttering and struggling to catch its breath. This one is not strictly made for gaming purposes. The laptop can handle light games, but the moment you try loading AAA titles onto it, you will see how quickly the laptop gets warm, and even the fan noise becomes audible.

I tested the Galaxy Book Pro using our suite of synthetic benchmarks, and here’s how it performed.

Benchmark Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition Asus Zenbook S 16 (2024)

Apart from regular tasks, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro also excels in functions that you can continue from your Galaxy smartphone. Yes, the seamless connection enhances the overall workflow when in the same ecosystem. Features like Multi Control, which enables drag-and-drop functionality across your Galaxy smartphone and laptop, Quick Share, AI Select, and File and Call Syncing make the Book 5 Pro a true everyday companion. Most of the AI features are gimmicky and won’t be something you will use often. The AI Select is a Circle to Search-inspired feature for your laptop, enabling search with a single click. Photo Remaster, on the other hand, uses AI to enhance images when enabled.

If you’re already using a high-end Samsung Galaxy device, it’s much better to opt for the Book 5 Pro, as it offers numerous continuity features on the laptop. The Samsung Settings app on the Book 5 Pro will remind you of the One UI Settings screen on your Galaxy phone. Familiar toggles and options make it great for everyday use. If you don’t have a Galaxy smartphone, then you will miss out on most of these features. In that case, you can only use features like Phone Link, which allows you to mirror your screen and receive notifications from your phone. The battery setting in the Samsung Settings screen enables battery protection and allows you to set the charging stop at 80%. You can also choose modes on the same settings page, including High Performance, Optimised, Quiet, and Silent.

The Galaxy Book 5 Pro comes with a decent number of connectivity ports, so you shouldn’t feel a lack of them. The fingerprint scanner on the power button is quick, and it is one of the most reliable biometrics we have used on a laptop in a long time.

The laptop gets a quad speaker setup with Dolby Atmos support

Overall, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro is an ideal work machine for all your professional needs, and you can bet on it.

Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro Battery: Decent, at most

  • Capacity – 63.1Wh (Li-ion)
  • Charger – Fast charging adapter (included in the box)

The 14-inch model packs a 63.1Wh battery that lasts 6-8 hours at max. It’s good enough to get you through your entire work shift, and that’s not bad. However, when compared to the Mac with Apple silicon then, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro lags behind.

However, the addition of a fast-charging adapter means that the Galaxy Book 5 Pro can charge from 0 to 60% in under 60 minutes, which is impressive. In multiple charging tests I conducted, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro managed to charge up to 35% in less than 30 minutes. The Galaxy Book 5 Pro takes approximately 80-90 minutes to fully charge, according to my internal tests. A bonus is that the charging adapter is lightweight and not a hefty brick, which is usually the case with laptops in this price bracket.

Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro Review: Verdict

The Galaxy Book 5 Pro is a great work laptop for all your professional needs. It is even an excellent pick for students working on assignments related to their studies. The laptop offers a great combination of a solid build and an impressive display, while the Intel Lunar Lake processor will not let you down in everyday tasks.

However, if you’re into gaming, then look elsewhere, as the Galaxy Book 5 Pro has its limitations, and gaming is its biggest Achilles’ heel. It is currently retailing at as low as Rs. 126,990, the Galaxy Book 5 Pro is an excellent Windows 11 machine for those looking for Mac alternatives. It ticks all the right boxes and emerges as a laptop designed for users who are always on the go. The battery life isn’t the Galaxy Book 5 Pro’s biggest strength, but it’s not a deal breaker in any way.

For those already in the Galaxy ecosystem, the addition of the Galaxy Book 5 Pro will be a bonus, and you will love the continuity features. For alternatives, you can consider the 15-inch MacBook Air, available at Rs. 124,900, or the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i, available at Rs. 125,000 running Windows 11.

Asus V470VA All-in-One PC Review: A Stylish All-in-One PC For Everyday Work

Asus is one of the few players that have continuously tried to bring about change in the PC industry. With the All-in-One PC or AiO lineup, the company is trying to eye the home or office space. The brand has been consistently launching AiO in the market for a while now, which comes loaded with a set of premium features and decent performance. Banking on this success, the company recently introduced the ASUS V400 series of AiO PCs to the market. I was fortunate enough to use the ASUS V470VA model for a while now to understand if it still makes sense to buy an AiO at a time when sleek and premium laptops are taking over homes. So, here’s what you need to know.

Asus V470VA All-in-One PC Design: Sturdy and Colourful

  • Dimension – 210 x 447 x 613mm
  • Weight – 9.0kg
  • Colours – White

The Asus V470VA surely looks modern and minimal. The moment you take the device out of the packaging, you will notice its elegant appearance. And setting it up is also not a hassle. You just need to screw the base plate to the AiO, although, due to its size, you might need some extra hands. Once done, plug in the adapter, place it on a table, attach the bundled wireless keyboard and mouse, and voilà, you’re good to go.

1 Asus V470VA

The Asus V470VA is available in White colour option.

That said, the chassis feels premium compared to its predecessors. The AiO is also sleeker compared to the previous models, which makes it look more modern. The AiO features rounded corners and a sleek profile, making it easy to place comfortably in a home office or even in your living room.

The hinge also appears sturdy, and you can tilt the screen as you prefer, which is a welcome feature. Interestingly, this AiO also comes with an IR-based retractable webcam, which is neatly tucked inside the chassis. This also allows a physical level of privacy. The rear panel of the device is equally refined. The ports are located at the bottom of the rear panel, making them easily accessible. And more importantly, you can easily manage the cables through the metal-finish stand.

That said, the AiO is not the lightest all-in-one available on the market, but moving it from one place to another is not a daunting task.

3 Asus V470VA

The Asus V470VA comes with a plethora of connectivity ports.

Coming to the ports, the Asus V470VA offers a plethora of port selections. You get a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port, a LAN port, a DC-in port, an HDMI-in port, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, and one HDMI-out port. There are also some ports at the bottom of the right side, including a USB 2.0 Type-A port, a 3.5mm audio jack, an HDMI mode button, and a Kensington lock slot.

There are plenty of ports on this, and I really liked the fact that the company has included both HDMI-in and HDMI-out ports, meaning you can easily connect any external device, such as your PlayStation, to this AiO and use it as a monitor. At the same time, the HDMI-in makes it easier to use the screen as an external monitor.

Asus V470VA All-in-One PC Display: Big Screen Experience Makes it Worth

  • Display – 27-inch IPS LCD
  • Resolution – Full HD (1080×1920 pixels)
  • Refresh Rate – 100Hz

One of the major highlights of this AiO is the display. The 27-inch IPS panel is likely to be one of the best I’ve used in this price segment for a while now. The display features an impressive 93 per cent screen-to-body ratio and offers 178-degree viewing angles. The thin bezels give an edge-to-edge feel, which is a good thing. More importantly, the company has added an anti-glare coating, which makes it easier to use even if the light source is just behind you.

6 Asus V470VA

The Asus V470VA features a 27-inch Full HD IPS display that offers 100Hz screen refresh rate.

The large display delivers good colour reproduction. The company claims that the display comes with 100 percent sRGB and 72 percent NTSC coverage, which further enhances colour reproduction. The colours appear to be natural, and the dynamic is decent as well, though not as great as an OLED panel.

You will not get those inky blacks, which are particularly noticeable when you are watching dimly lit scenes in a movie or series. That said, Asus offers two different modes, Splendid and Vivid, which provide some degree of control over saturation and contrast. That said, the 100Hz refresh rate surely makes the animations and scrolling much smoother. However, it is still advisable to keep it at a distance so that you don’t strain your eyes.

Asus V470VA All-in-One PC Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, and Webcam

  • Keyboard – Full-sized wireless keyboard
  • Webcam – 1080p IR camera
  • Speakers – 5W x 2 with Dolby Atmos

Asus provides a wireless keyboard and mouse with the V470VA, both colour-matched to the unit. The keyboard features a full-sized layout, including a numeric keypad. That said, I was pretty disappointed with the keyboard and mouse combination, to be honest. Typing on the keyboard was a poor experience.

5 Asus V470VA

The Asus V470VA comes with a wireless keyboard and optical mouse.

First of all, the key travel feels a bit off, and the whole typing experience was not the smoothest, to be honest. It would be better if you purchased a better keyboard for your daily usage. The same can be said for the mouse as well. The optical mouse is basic and feels somewhat cheap when held.

Speaker quality is where the V470VA pleasantly surprises. The AiO comes with two 5W speakers that Dolby Atmos power. The speakers provide a louder output than the previous models and easily outperform the tinny audio you might expect from an all-in-one form factor. The sound was decent enough (even at high volumes ) to fill a medium-sized room easily.

The retractable 1080p IR webcam, which features Windows Hello support, is also a notable highlight. AI enhancements such as motion tracking and lighting correction help users maintain a professional appearance during video calls. That said, the webcam’s quality in low-light environments wasn’t that outstanding during my testing.

Asus V470VA All-in-One PC Software: Does It Job

  • Operating System – Windows 11 Home
  • Other Features – AI Camera, AI Noise Cancellation

The Asus V470VA runs on the Windows 11 operating system. Since an older chipset powers it, this machine is not a CoPilot+ PC. However, there are also some useful AI features. To start, the device features AI-powered noise-cancelling technology to enhance the audio experience. A significant bonus is the inclusion of Microsoft Office Home 2024 (lifetime license) and one year of Microsoft 365 Basic, which is a good addition.

Asus V470VA All-in-One PC Performance: Reliable for Daily Usage

  • Chipset – 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13620H Processor
  • RAM – 16GB LPDDR5
  • ROM – 1TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD

The Asus V470VA is powered by an older 13th-generation Intel Core i7 processor that offers 10 cores and a clock speed of up to 4.90GHz. The chipset is equipped with Intel UHD Graphics. Moreover, this device offers up to 16GB of DDR5 and up to 1TB of NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD storage, both of which are expandable. However, it is advisable to get it expanded from a service centre to ensure its smooth operation.

That said, the performance of AiO is decent for daily usage. Whether be it streaming, scrolling, or using multiple Chrome tabs, the device glides effortlessly through these tasks. This is also reflected in the synthetic benchmarks, which are as follows:

Benchmark Asus V470VA
Cinebench R23 Single Core 1829
Cinebench R23 Multi Core 11116
Geekbench 6 Single Core 2519
Geekbench 6 Multi Core 9131
PC Mark 10 6055
3DMark Night Raid 15406
3DMark CPU Profile 5937
3DMark Steel Nomad Light 853
CrystalDiskMark 6389.55 MB/s (Read)/ 5719.31 MB/s (Write)

The lack of a discrete GPU means that it cannot do heavy 3D rendering or gaming. The Intel UHD Graphics is sufficient for lightweight editing, but it fall short for demanding creative applications. So, if you’re someone who wants a big-screen experience and doesn’t heavily multitask or use it for creative purposes, then you can still consider this one.

Asus V470VA All-in-One PC Verdict

4 Asus V470VA

The Asus V470VA is a decent AIO for this price segment.

To conclude, the Asus V470VA is a refined all-in-one (AiO) from the brand that fills many gaps in the previous generation of models. The device is lighter and looks more modern compared to the older models. The ample ports also ensure that you can plug and play almost everything on this device. Moreover, with HDMI in and out ports, you can even use it to connect external devices or use it just as an external monitor.

The display looks good and offers natural colours, while the performance is decent enough to handle most daily tasks, except for gaming workloads. That said, the keyboard and mouse combo is a letdown, and the camera may feel lacking on such a large screen. Still, for its price, the all-in-one PC offers a good value-for-money proposition.

Asus V470VA
Price:
Rs. 50,990 (starting); Rs. 87,990 (as reviewed)

  • Sturdy and premium design
  • Bright display
  • Snappy performance
  • Good range of ports

Cons

  • The keyboard and mouse combo could be better
  • Webcam could be better

1,000-Year-Old Mummy Found by Gas Workers in Peru Linked to Chancay Culture

The gas workers in Peru discovered a mummy dated to a thousand years old during the time of pipe installation in Lima. The company named Calidda said this and confirmed this latest discovery of the prehistoric tomb in Peru. The workers found a trunk of the huarango tree, which is an inheritance of Peru’s coastal region. It served as a tomb marker in history and has a depth of 20 inches, as reported by the archaeologist Jesus Bahamonde to the gas company Calidda.

Archaeological Dig Found Mummy

Calidda also employed several archaeologists to get the excavation done at a deeper level in search of a heritage site in Lima. Archaeologist Jesus Bahamonde said that they found the mummy of a boy aged between 10 to 15, at a depth of 1.2 meters. The way of burial and the objects signaled its development between 1000 and 1200, he said. The mummy was found in a sitting position with the arms and legs bent, as per Bahamonde. They were shrouded and were found with the calabash gourds.

Mummy Belongs to the Pre-Inca Chancay Culture

Along with mummy, there were ceramic objects, such as plates, jugs, and bottles were found which were decorated with fishermen and geometric figures. This style of burial is similar to that of the Pre-Inca Chancay culture between the 11th and 15th centuries.

How they were found

The incident of digging took place when the gas workers were unearthing from an avenue in the district, Puente, located in northern Lima. In Peru, it is a must for the utility companies to hire archaeologists while drilling the Earth. This is because there is a possibility of getting any heritage sites.

Lima, A Place of Archaeological Sites

Till now, Calidda has made over 2,200 archaeological findings from the year 2004. Lima is home to over 500 archaeological sites, including 12 huacas, which are ancient cemeteries termed in the Indigenous Quechua language.

Massive X-Class Solar Flare Erupts, Causing Widespread Pacific Radio Blackouts

A powerful X1.9-class solar flare blasted out of the sun’s active region 4114 on June 19, peaking at 9:50 p.m. EDT (0150 GMT, June 20), and led to a shortwave radio blackout over the Pacific Ocean and, in large part, for Hawaii. Although the flare was accompanied by a sizable eruption of X-ray and ultraviolet light, it did not appear to be associated with a very powerful coronal mass ejection (CME), so there will be no auroras for hopeful skywatchers at this time. The energetic flare, however, destabilised a substantial magnetic filament in the southern hemisphere of the sun, hinting at more activity to come.

X1.9 Solar Flare From Sunspot 4114 Disrupts Radio Signals, Sparks Fears of Future Geomagnetic Storms

As per Space Weather Live and spaceweather.com reports, the electromagnetic radiation from the flare reached Earth within minutes, ionizing the upper atmosphere and disrupting shortwave radio communication below 25 MHz. In the Pacific region, ham radio operators reported an abrupt loss of signals following the peak of the flare. That happens due to a powerful solar disturbance that collides with the Earth’s ionosphere, increasing electron density and weakening the ability to absorb high-frequency signals. The outcome is signal attenuation or loss, as normally occurs during periods of intense solar activity.

Solar flares are ranked in strength, and X-class flares are the most intense ones. The flares from sunspot 4114 — rated at X1.9 — are one of the strongest in the current solar cycle. It follows an earlier eruption from the same region just days ago, rated at X1.2. The region has now drawn close monitoring due to its continued magnetic complexity and explosive potential.

Although no CME accompanied the latest flare, experts suggest future eruptions from region 4114 could be more geoeffective. If a CME is launched in subsequent flares, geomagnetic storms and auroral activity may follow.

Space weather forecasts and aurora updates are available on NOAA’s 3-day geomagnetic outlook and dedicated solar activity blogs.

Doom: The Dark Ages Review: Rip and Tear, Medieval Style

When id Software rebooted Doom in 2016, it not only injected new life into a dormant franchise but also hit the refresh button on the first-person shooter genre. Annual Call of Duty releases, a faltering Battlefield series, and other COD clones had left shooting games feeling stale. Doom, with its brutal, relentless combat and classic FPS mechanics, arrived as a palate cleanser. It shirked modern FPS tenets of cover shooting and regenerating health and instead pushed players to be aggressive and punish enemies up close.

Nearly a decade later, the new Doom is a trilogy of distinct first-person shooters that share a common DNA. Doom (2016) was built on series’ roots, prioritising visceral and satisfying gunplay; the sequel, Doom Eternal, added kinetic movement and a tactical bend to its predecessor’s combat. With Doom: The Dark Ages, which released May 15 on PC and consoles, id Software takes a medieval approach to demon slaying. The newest Doom is more grounded, crunchy and weighty, but that doesn’t mean it’s cumbersome. The action is still quick and gunplay still chaotic.

You’re still whipping around the area, slicing through a deck of demons to heart-pounding heavy metal, but Doom: The Dark Ages switches things up by weighing down the Doom Slayer and bringing melee weapons to the mix. The familiar rotating cast of devastating guns returns, but they’re all essentially playing side fiddle to the new Shield Saw that lies at the red-hot core of game. The versatile weapon, which persists on the Doom Slayer’s left hand, powers the core mechanics for defence, attack and traversal in The Dark Ages. It’s astonishing how a single piece of transformative equipment becomes the fulcrum of all you do in the new Doom. There are a few missteps and missed opportunities, but none of them are egregious enough to make Doom: The Dark Ages anything but a bloody good time.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Review: A Nostalgic Upgrade That Works… Almost

The weakest cog in the machine is the story, but it’s also the cog that’s not crucial to the game’s functioning. You don’t need context for carnage, but it would have helped if The Dark Ages punctuated its action with narrative beats that lent weight to the violence. The game serves as a prequel to Doom and Doom Eternal and takes place on the atmospheric and ominous world of Argent D’Nur, the home planet of Night Sentinals. There’s a war against Hell raging on, with the Heart of Argent, an ancient artefact that can grant godlike powers to its bearer, at stake.

The Night Sentinels are aided by the Maykrs, an advanced and ancient race of beings who hold the Doom Slayer in their control. As the Sentinals are overwhelmed by the forces of Hell led by Azhrak, the prince of Hell, the Maykrs drop the ferocious, mind-controlled Slayer into the middle of the battlefield to protect the Heart of Argent and turn the tide of war. The story takes you through different frontiers of the war as you cleave your way through the army of demons, before some twists change the nature of the conflict itself. The Slayer resists the Maykr’s control, alliances are altered and a secret about the Heart of Argent is revealed.

The story will be more engaging to those who’ve played Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal as it covers intriguing history between the Slayer, the Maykrs and the Night Sentinels, setting up events that will follow. But on its own, The Dark Ages stops short of delivering a compelling narrative, opting to play it safe rather than taking a bolder approach. But that’s okay because Doom: The Dark Ages tells a more convincing story through its fantastical environments that blend medieval grandeur and science fiction. This is a world where you explore ancient, colossal cities on the back of a cybernetic dragon and walk up to the gates of the fortress in Hell — it’s visual storytelling at its best.

Each level brings something distinct to the table and sets the stage not only for the battle against Hell, but also for the narrative to find a foothold in the locations you visit. At Argent D’Nur, you explore compact but winding indoor areas like barracks and command stations, delving deeper into the stacked maze. And then you’re out in the open, gazing at a sprawling forest or making your way through the ruins of a village. In between certain levels, cutscenes fill in the gaps at pivotal moments and drive the story forward, but these only act as curtains for the stage where you play out each act.

The meat, of course, lies in the combat. The Doom franchise is built on the pillars of visceral and chaotic first-person shooter gameplay and Doom: The Dark Ages is no different. But id Software has refreshed the formula this time by turning the Doom Slayer into a medieval, murderous tank. The Slayer has always been formidable — he’s one of gaming’s greatest badasses. In The Dark Ages, however, he embodies something more primordial. A cross between a silent, cybernetic Terminator and a bloodthirsty Viking lord, with a fur cape, a shield and a flail to boot.

The Slayer is still agile, but he’s much heavier and his melee attacks crunchier. And the Shield Saw essentially acts as an extension of the Slayer himself. This is not a piece of gear you can equip or put away, rather it forms the mechanical basis of the game itself. You can of course block incoming projectiles and melee attacks with the shield, but it also enables you to parry both of those attacks with a timely press of the left trigger on the controller and leave the enemy stunned. All projectiles and melee attacks that can be parried are colour-coded green and they present an opportunity to turn defence into offense.

The parry window is forgiving by default, even at higher difficulties, but the new mechanic presents unique scenarios where Doom: The Dark Ages almost becomes a bullet hell lite as you slip through the barrage of red projectiles to parry the green ones. Later in the game, you empower your shield parries with runic abilities that deal devastating damage to multiple enemies in front of you. The Shield Saw can be used for a more direct attack, too. With the press of the left bumper on the controller, you can launch the shield at your enemies like a frisbee. The serrated edges of the Shield Saw slice right through fodder demons, but with larger enemies, the shield lodges itself into their bodies, making them more vulnerable to your gunfire. And once its job is done, the shield flies right back into your hands like Thor’s hammer.

And finally, the versatile Shield Saw also acts as a tool for traversal. Doom: The Dark Ages is slower, heavier and more deliberate, but the shield allows the Slayer to zip across the arena and slam into enemies with concussive force. When you hold the shield up, it locks onto a demon ahead of you, and as you press the attack button, you’re launched at the target like a medieval missile, covering a lot of ground in a split second. While, this attack obliterates columns of smaller demons in front of you and stuns larger ones, it also serves as a strategic and quick way to traverse across the battlefield. The Shield Saw also acts as a sort of a grappling hook, embedding into specific anchor points and pulling you to hidden, inaccesible areas.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Review: Double-Edged Sword

With the shield locked to the Slayer’s left hand, you cycle through the game’s array of guns on the right one. It wouldn’t be a Doom game without a selection of ridiculously overpowered, cool as hell weapons. You start, of course, with the good ol’ combat shotgun, but you quickly assimilate an arsenal of firearms fit for a war on Hell. There’s the Pulveriser, that chews through demon skulls and shoots out bone fragments; the Chainshot is a chained iron ball that charges up and smacks demons in the head with devastating power; and the Impaler fires precision metal spikes that do extra damage with headshots.

But the real ballistic fun begins when you start getting upgrades for different weapons. Doom: The Dark Ages has distinct upgrade paths for each weapon that unlock synergies with other actions, like parrying or shield throw or melee attacks. This allows you to specialize in specific weapons and pick a playstyle to your liking. For example, if you invest in upgrading the Chainshot, you can unlock a perk that instantly charges your next shot when you parry an incoming attack with your shield, thus making the Shield Saw and the Chainshot and excellent one-two combo. One of my favourites was the Richochet upgrade for the Shredder weapon, which deflects projectiles shot at a demon with the Shield Saw embedded in it to other nearby enemies, in effect spreading your damage output.

Weapon upgrades bring meaningful combat synergies

To get these meaningful upgrades for your shield, guns and melee weapons (there are three of them — a gauntlet, a flail and a mace), you must scour each level to find hidden resources like gold, rubies and wraithstones. You’re likely going to miss these if you race to your objective marker and don’t explore the map, as they’re usually locked behind an environmental or platforming puzzle. But with weapon and shield upgrades affecting how you play the game, exploration is encouraged. I found myself scanning the automap and hunting down all collectibles to get 100 percent completion in each level.

The levels themselves are designed to be distinct from one another. They can be open and sprawling, spilling out in all directions with multiple objectives tucked away in faraway corners. Or they can be tighter and compact, collapsing upon themselves and creating a maze of connected corridors. The same goes for arenas where you encounter hordes of demons, too. Often, they’re an open field you can dash about with a few structures spread out, but sometimes they trap you in a smaller space and the only way out is demonic carnage. Either way, the Slayer always feels like he’s in control of the situation — a ferocious Middle-Age clean-up guy, sent to wipe out all manners of hell spawn.

The game allows you to become the true demon on the battlefield. If you keep upgrading your gear, utilise your guns a little more tactically and master the Shield Saw, you can feel invincible. You can walk into a boss fight feeling like the boss — that’s a power fantasy very few games can offer. And it’s not just the gameplay that contributes to that feeling, it’s the sound design, too, that goes into establishing you as a medieval wrecking ball to be reckoned with. Your shield goes off like a gong when you parry attacks and lets out an explosive bang when you charge into demons. When you jump, you’re whooshing through the air as almost every other sound quiets down, and then you land with the force of a tank being dropped on the battlefield with a thunderous crack that sends out shockwaves.

But on the flipside, the soundtrack is disappointing, especially with Mick Gordon’s excellent work on the previous two Doom games in the rearview. It’s generic heavy metal that barely gets the job done. There’s no personality to it, no signature flair that makes it feel like the soundtrack to a carnage. It’s also not very prominent. The music is going off somewhere in the distance as you’re cutting down demons, but you’re not overtly aware of it. There are fewer glory kills, as well, which can feel anti-climactic when you take down a bigger demon.

Doom: The Dark Ages changes up the pace with dragon and mech levels

The game also tries to break up the pacing with two new kinds of levels that involve the Slayer riding a cyberdragon and engaging in aerial combat and exploration, and controlling a colossal Atlan mech to get into fistfights with towering demons. These can be fun and serve as neat little punctuations to the regular run-and gun gameplay, but they’re also very basic. There’s not a lot of mechanical depth to these sections and they’re largely trying to sell you scale and scope of the action. But at least the underwhelming dragon and mech levels are few and far between and never overstay their welcome.

Where Doom: The Dark Ages goes above and beyond what Doom and Doom Eternal achieved are the visuals. On a technical level, id Software has truly knocked this one out of the park. The Dark Ages, built on the ID Tech 8 engine, is stunning to look at and runs without a single hiccup. There’s an incredible amount of character detail on demons, a healthy variety of environments and a pulpy exaggeration to the gore that feeds into the game’s medieval sci-fi medley. Every outdoor level also comes with these jaw-dropping vistas that make you stop and look. These are largely done through beautifully detailed, expansive skyboxes that depict the unending war on Hell. Performance on PS5 was flawless, too, with game running at 60fps with no noticeable stutter.

Where does Doom: The Dark Ages then sit in the Doom oeuvre? As the third game in the new trilogy, people might look at it as the lesser successor to groundbreaking games. But on its own merits, The Dark Ages is a superb entry in an iconic franchise that breaks its own new ground. It follows the id Software tradition of innovation to bring a new gameplay loop to the table. And the mix of medieval fantasy and science fiction fits the Doom franchise like a gauntlet.

The Dark Ages has more story and cutscenes than its predecessors, but the familiar tropes and their lacklustre execution leaves a lot to be desired. The gameplay, however, more than holds up its end of the bargain. The Shield Saw is a versatile addition that transforms literally every aspect of how you play a Doom game, but the guns and the gore keep it familiar enough for series veterans. This is perhaps the most accessible Doom game, too, with open-ended levels and highly customisable difficulty options that can tune the game to your liking — you can cakewalk through it, or you could turn it into a dance with the devil in hell. But what stands out most, especially in times where games built on grind start feeling like a chore, is how fun and fluid the Doom: The Dark Ages is. Wasn’t that that the whole point?
