Shreyas Iyer not in Test contention yet, says former India cricketer: 'His time will come'

Former India opener Aakash Chopra has poured cold water on hopes of seeing Shreyas Iyer in India’s Test squad anytime soon, despite the 30-year-old’s standout performances in recent months across formats. While Iyer was India’s top scorer in their victorious ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign and had a stellar run in both the IPL and domestic red-ball season, Chopra believes there is a long queue ahead of him when it comes to Test selection.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Many others haven’t gotten a chance either,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel. “If you think about it, Karun Nair has only just gotten his chance. Sarfaraz Khan hasn’t been given a shot. Dhruv Jurel is waiting on the sidelines. If he cannot even get among those who are in the waiting line, then how can he be considered for selection?”

Iyer has indeed had a superb run. He scored 480 runs in just seven innings in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy at an average of 68.57 and a strike rate above 90. He then followed it up with a career-best IPL season, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches and leading Punjab Kings to their first final in nine years.

Poll

Do you think Shreyas Iyer deserves a spot in India’s Test squad?

Still, Chopra emphasised that red-ball opportunities will only come with patience. “I know he had a good first-class season. He had a good IPL, took Punjab Kings to the final, did well in white-ball cricket — but his time will come in Tests. He will have to wait just a little bit.”Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan, another contender, continues to impress. After three fifties and a 150 in six Tests, he struck 92 for India A against England Lions and followed it up with a century in the intra-squad match ahead of the England series.

‘Against Ambedkar’s ideology’: CJI Gavai on Article 370; says need ‘one Constitution to keep country united’ | India News

'Against Ambedkar's ideology': CJI Gavai on Article 370; says need 'one Constitution to keep country united'

NEW DELHI: The Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Saturday supported the abrogation of Article 370 and said that in order to keep the country united, “we need only one Constitution”. He recalled when the case was brought before the Supreme Court, the five-judge bench unanimously upheld the Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370 citing it against BR Ambedkar’s ideology.“When Article 370 was challenged, it came before us, and when the hearing was underway, I recalled Dr Babasaheb’s words that one Constitution is suited for a country… If we want to keep the country united, we need only one Constitution,” PTI quoted Gavai saying. On August 5, 2019, the Centre revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and reorganised it into two Union territories. Justice Gavai noted that Ambedkar had faced criticism for including too much federalism in the Constitution, with concerns that it might weaken national unity during times of war.“See the situation in the neighbouring countries, be it Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. Whenever our country faces challenges, it has remained united,” he added.Gavai was speaking at the inauguration of the Constitution Preamble Park in Nagpur.

‘Secularism goes against Indian idea’: Assam CM Himanta Biswa backs RSS call to remove words from Constitution; adds ‘socialism never our vision’ | India News

'Secularism goes against Indian idea': Assam CM Himanta Biswa backs RSS call to remove words from Constitution; adds 'socialism never our vision'

NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday backed RSS’s suggestion to restore the Preamble of the Constitution, saying that this is the right time to remove the legacies of the Emergency, including the words “secularism” and “socialism. While launching a book titled The Emergency Diaries: Years That Forged a Leader at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati, Biswa said that these words were not part of the original Constitution and should be dropped, as secularism goes against the Indian idea of Sarva Dharma Sambhava, and socialism was never part of India’s original economic vision.“Today, we launched the book The Emergency Diary, which talks about the struggle and resistance during the Emergency. When we talk about the Emergency, this is the right moment to remove its remaining impact, just like Prime Minister Modi is working to erase the legacy of colonial rule. Two major outcomes of the Emergency were the addition of the words secularism and socialism to our Constitution. I believe secularism goes against the Indian idea of Sarva Dharma Sambhava. Socialism was also never truly our economic vision, our focus has always been on Sarvodaya Antyodaya,” Biswa said.“So, I request the Government of India to remove these two words, secularism and socialism, from the Preamble, as they were not part of the original Constitution and were added later by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi,” he added. This comes a day after Hosabale proposed that the words “socialist” and “secular” were forcibly added to the Constitution and should now be reconsidered.“The Emergency wasn’t just a misuse of power, but an attempt to crush civil liberties. Millions were imprisoned, and freedom of the press was suppressed.” He said that those who imposed the Emergency and trampled the Constitution and democracy have never apologised. The words “socialist”, “secular”, and “integrity” were inserted into the Preamble under the 42nd Constitutional Amendment moved by the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi government in 1976.The amendment changed the description of India in the Preamble from a “sovereign, democratic republic” to a “sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic.”Earlier, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea challenging the inclusion of the words “socialist”, “secular”, and “integrity” to the Preamble of the Constitution.A bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar said amendment power of the Parliament extends to the Preamble as well, and the fact that the Constitution was adopted in 1949 does not make any difference.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday interacted with Shubhanshu Shukla, who is aboard the International Space Station as a part of the Axiom-4 mission.Shukla is the first Indian to cross the ‘Karman line’ in more than 41 years, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma’s historic mission aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 on April 3, 1984. From space, Shukla had shared a message: “This isn’t the beginning of my journey to ISS, but beginning of India’s human space flight programme.”The Dragon capsule carrying the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) crew, including Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla — call sign Grace — glided silently through space with its nose cone open and docking sensors ready, successfully linking with the International Space Station on Thursday. This historic moment marked the first time an Indian set foot on the orbiting lab. Soft docking occurred at around 16.02 IST, with the full docking process completed by 16:16 IST. Launched the previous day from Nasa’s Kennedy Space Center, Grace carried out a series of precise orbit-raising manoeuvres during its 28-hour pursuit of the ISS — a standard Dragon mission profile but a remarkable journey for Shukla.
