Donald Trump tariffs to hit global economy hard! IMF cuts India’s GDP growth forecast to 6.2% for 2025; says it’s relatively more stable

Donald Trump tariffs to hit global economy hard! IMF cuts India's GDP growth forecast to 6.2% for 2025; says it's relatively more stable
For India, the growth outlook is relatively more stable at 6.2 percent in 2025, said IMF. (AI image)

India’s GDP growth outlook for 2025 has been revised downwards to 6.2% by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its World Economic Outlook report for April 2025. In its January world growth outlook report, the IMF had predicted a 6.5% GDP growth rate for the Indian economy.
The revision in growth outlook comes on the back of increased uncertainty due to US President Donald Trump’s tariff moves. “For India, the growth outlook is relatively more stable at 6.2 percent in 2025, supported by private consumption, particularly in rural areas, but this rate is 0.3 percentage point lower than that in the January 2025 WEO Update on account of higher levels of trade tensions and global uncertainty,” IMF said in its report.
IMF has also drastically revised downwards the growth outlook for the global economy, the US and China. The growth forecast for the world economy has been cut to 2.8% down half a percentage point from the earlier estimates.

Global growth revised down significantly

Global growth revised down significantly

For China, 2025 GDP growth is revised downward to 4.0 percent from 4.6 percent in the January 2025 WEO Update. This reflects the impact of recently implemented tariffs, which offset the stronger carryover from 2024 (as a result of a stronger-than-expected fourth quarter) and fiscal expansion in the budget, IMF said.
Growth in 2026 is also revised downward to 4.0 percent from 4.5 percent in the January 2025 WEO Update on the back of prolonged trade policy uncertainty and the tariffs now in place, IMF added.
The GDP growth projection for the US economy has been cut sharply to 1.8%, down almost a full percentage point from the January 2025 projection.
“The global economic system under which most countries have operated for the last 80 years is being reset, ushering the world into a new era. Existing rules are challenged while new ones are yet to emerge,” said IMF.
“Since late January, a flurry of tariff announcements by the United States…The resulting epistemic uncertainty and policy unpredictability is a major driver of the economic outlook. If sustained, this abrupt increase in tariffs and attendant uncertainty will significantly slow global growth,” it warned.

Hospital visits for Marijuana use linked to 72% higher dementia risk, major study warns

Hospital visits for Marijuana use linked to 72% higher dementia risk, major study warns

Marijuana’s potential medicinal benefits have shifted public perception of the psychoactive drug derived from the Cannabis plant, contributing to its growing popularity. Countries like Canada, Uruguay, Mexico and Thailand, and 22 states in the US have legalized recreational marijuana, while 50 countries have approved it for medicinal purposes.
However, one cannot ignore that its regular use has been associated with a heightened risk of a range of life-threatening conditions like strokes, heart attacks, cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure and myocarditis.
4/20 day, celebrated every year on April 20, by weed lovers, brought the drug into the spotlight, sparking discussions on its growing popularity as well as risks.
A new study published in the journal JAMA Neurology that links an increased risk of dementia to cannabis use is especially crucial in this regard. The terms cannabis and marijuana are often used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. While cannabis refers to the plant Cannabis sativa, marijuana is one of the products derived from this plant that has a high concentration of THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid.

Dementia and Marijuana connection

dementia thum

The connection between long-term cannabis and dementia isn’t new and has been demonstrated in the previous studies. An American Journal of Psychiatry study discusses how cannabis use over a long period of time is linked to hippocampal atrophy and poorer cognitive function in midlife, which are known risk factors for dementia.
The new study delves into the five-year cognitive impact of cannabis-related medical emergencies, revealing a significant association between such events and an elevated risk of developing dementia.
“Someone who has an emergency room visit or hospitalization due to cannabis has a 23% increased risk of dementia within five years compared to someone who was at the hospital for another reason. They have a 72% greater risk compared to the general population,” says study coauthor Dr Daniel Myran, an assistant professor in the department of family medicine at the University of Ottawa in Canada.

“Those numbers have already factored out other reasons for dementia, such as age, sex, mental health or substance use, and whether or not you have chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease,” Myran added.
Earlier research shows marijuana users are nearly 25% more likely to need emergency care and hospitalization than nonusers.

marijuana

“However, this is not a study that anyone should look at and say, ‘Jury’s in, and cannabis use causes dementia,’” Myran said. “This is a study that brings up a concerning association that fits within a growing body of research.”
While medical marijuana is considered to be safe in limited doses under expert supervision, it is more complicated than that. Many people with cannabis use disorder are not able to stop using it and that’s where the real problem lies.
US federal law doesn’t allow the use of marijuana. However, many states allow medical use to treat pain, nausea and other symptoms. The THC in marijuana affects the brain, mood, behavior and thoughts, the reason why it is called psychoactive. Medicinal marijuana can be advised for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, HIV/AIDS, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Epilepsy, and serious nausea or vomiting caused by cancer treatment. However, are its side effects worth it? Let’s understand.

What’s cannabis use disorder?

Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD), a medically recognized condition is marked by a problematic and often compulsive pattern of marijuana use. Its severity can vary from mild habits that interfere with daily life to full-blown addiction. Marijuana is part of cannabis, but not all cannabis is marijuana. Cannabis use disorder mainly involves THC-containing substances such as marijuana. Addiction to marijuana could happen when the brain’s reward system takes over and amplifies compulsive marijuana-seeking.
People with cannabis use disorder are unable to stop using even though they encounter health or social problems from use, Dr. Robert Page II, a professor of clinical pharmacy and physical medicine at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Aurora told CNN.

cbd

“When they stop using it, they either have withdrawal symptoms or have very bad mental health symptoms,” he added. “They might have quite severe depression, or they might have anxiety, all of which can send them to the hospital.”
According to the CDC, around 30% of people can get addicted to marijuana. This can pose risk of attention, memory and learning problems, as per CDC.

What you need to know about marijuana’s safety

“The other takeaway from this study is that many people believe marijuana to be natural and therefore safe,” Page said. “It is a psychotropic medication, so it’s going to have psychotropic effects. If you have underlying psychiatric issues, realize that you need to be transparent with your provider and let them know if you’re using this medically or recreationally.”
According to mayoclinic, the other side effects of medical marijuana include increased heart rate, dizziness, problems with thinking and memory, slower reaction times, increased risk of heart attack and stroke, panic attacks, and hallucinations, among others.

NDTV Exclusive – “Took 1st Opportunity We Got To Come To India”: Usha Vance

Usha Vance, the Second Lady of the United States, spoke exclusively to NDTV Tuesday about the ‘family man’ side of her husband and Vice President JD Vance, sharing heart-warming anecdotes about his fondness for Indian food and their three children’s interest in India.

Mrs Vance, who is of Indian origin and has roots in Andhra Pradesh, also spoke about her wedding to the Veep – an interfaith ceremony in Kentucky in the US in 2014 – revealing that it was important to include traditional Hindu rites to acknowledge her parents and ancestors.

US Veep Vance and his family are in India for a four-day visit.

They reached Jaipur earlier today and were shown around Amber Fort, a 16th century sandstone and marble fortress built by Man Singh I, who ruled the region from 1589 to 1614.

The fort was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.

On The Children

Mrs Vance, in a chic white full-sleeved blouse and floral skirt, spoke at length about her three children – Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel – and their interest in the Hindu epics.

“They (the kids) have never been to India, but they have read Indian history… so they have a sense of who would have been here (at the Amber Fort) historically,” she told NDTV, recalling the family’s visit to the fortress.

On Vance’s Cooking ‘Skills’

The US Veep proved his skills as a high-stakes negotiator Monday, closing a trade deal between Delhi and Washington, D.C., even as Donald Trump’s tariffs hover in the background.

In the kitchen, though, he is only an ‘experimental cook’, Mrs Vance smiled.

He does, however, have a fondness for Indian food, with channa masala and lamb dishes among his favourites. The kids are a fan too, the Second Lady said, “They eat it all the time.”

“My mother and grandmother are excellent cooks… my father makes very dosa,” she told NDTV, emphasising the pan-Indian tastebuds of the Vance household.

On The Vance Wedding

JD and Usha were wed in Kentucky in 2014.

According to a report by The New York Times, the interfaith ceremony was held outdoors, with wooden benches for guests who flew in from around the world.

Mrs Vance told NDTV it was important for her to have that Hindu element in her wedding ceremony, as a nod to her Indian heritage and her parents.

The couple were blessed by a Hindu priest and Jamil Jivani, a Canadian MP who is a close friend of JD and who read from the Bible. JD Vance was, then, not a Catholic; he converted in 2022, and he credits Usha Vance with that big moment in his life.

“The sad fact is that I couldn’t do it without Usha. Even at my best, I’m a delayed explosion – I can be defused, but only with skill and precision,” he wrote in his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy.

On Visiting PM Modi’s Residence

On Monday evening the Vance family met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence in Delhi.

They enjoyed a puppet show there, which Mrs Vance said, was thoroughly enjoyed by the kids.” The leather puppets from Andhra Pradesh… against shadow screens… it blew their minds!”

The Prime Minister also hosted a dinner for the family.

On The India Visit

This is JD Vance and the kids’ first visit to India, and it has been a special moment, Mrs Vance told NDTV. “It is a country that is growing… that is young and vibrant, and I think he (the Vice President) has been very impressed by what he has read about India, its culture and trajectory.”

“This is a trip of a lifetime. I have been to India (before) but it was something I wanted to share with my nuclear family,” she said, recalling the colourful and traditional Rajasthani-style welcome, which included appearances by two elephants – Chanda and Puja.

What Now?

The Vances leave for Agra Wednesday to visit the Taj Mahal.

They will return to Jaipur briefly since JD Vance is scheduled to tour the City Palace.

And then they depart for home early Thursday.

‘Democracy or kingdom, Waqf exists in all Muslim nations’: Owaisi’s ‘Ya-Habibi’ jibe at PM Modi’s Saudi visit | India News

'Democracy or kingdom, Waqf exists in all Muslim nations': Owaisi's 'Ya-Habibi' jibe at PM Modi's Saudi visit
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi (PTI Photo)

NEW DELHI: Doubling down on his criticism of the new Waqf law, AIMIM chief Assaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday took a jibe at PM Modi over his Saudi visit, saying the Prime Minister should ask the Crown Prince if “Medina is built on Waqf land.
“PM Modi is visiting Saudi Arabia, where he will meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, warmly exchanging greetings like ‘Ya-Habibi, Ya-Habibi.’ Upon returning to India, he will urge the people to identify Muslims by their clothing,” Owaisi said while addressing an anti-Waqf gathering in Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium.
The Hyderabad MP also claimed that Waqf exists in all Mulsim countries, be it a “kingdom or democracy” and that the BJP’s assertion that Waqf provisions did not exist in the Muslim nation was a “lie”.
“Someone from the BJP said in the Parliament that this particular Muslim country does not have Waqf… I want to tell PM Narendra Modi that during his visit to Saudi Arabia, he should ask the crown prince if Medina is built on Waqf land. Waqf exists in every Muslim country, be it a democracy or a kingdom.”
On the ongoing debate over the separation of powers between the three wings of the democracy and the Supreme Court’s alleged “overlapping” into the legislative, Owaisi said: “The 2013 Waqf Bill was passed unanimously by both the houses of Parliament… As per the theory of separation of powers, the judiciary, the legislature, and the executive are all independent. If the government misuses its powers or any article of the Constitution, the judiciary will intervene. Where else will we go?”
The AIMIM chief also mocked VP Jagdeep Dhankar’s “Parliament is supreme” remark, saying, “if you make wrong law, the judiciary will intervene”.
“It is his limited understanding. Parliament is definitely supreme and independent. The judiciary and executive are also independent. This is why the stereo separation of powers is part of basic structure of our constitution… If you make wrong law, if you will misuse the constitutional articles, then judiciary will intervene,” Owaisi told news agency PTI.

5 Tourists Injured In Attack By Terrorists In J&K’s Pahalgam

5 Tourists Injured In Attack By Terrorists In J&K's Pahalgam

Security forces have rushed to the area. (Representational)

Pahalgam:

At least five tourists were injured in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir today. Security forces and medical teams have rushed to the area.

Gunshots were heard in the upper meadows of Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley. The area is approachable only on foot or on horseback.

The terrorists were apparently in camouflage and it is believed to be a targeted attack

Pahalgam, known for its forests, crystal-clear lakes and sprawling meadows, is a popular tourist spot.

The attack came at peak tourist season in the Valley and also when registration for this year’s Amarnath Yatra is going on across the country. The 38-day pilgrimage is set to begin from July 3, from two routes – the 48-km Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the other 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district, which is shorter but steeper.

During his recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting, where he gave orders for the complete eradication of terrorism with special focus on the Jammu division. He also gave directions to ensure zero tolerance to infiltration.

Top Government Sources Amid Row

The respect for the judiciary is paramount and all pillars of democracy are working in tandem for a Viksit Bharat, top government sources have said. The statement appears to be a balancing act after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and a section of BJP leaders targeted the Supreme Court and top judges took note.

“Respect for the judiciary is paramount. All pillars of democracy are working in tandem for a Viksit Bharat. The judiciary and the legislature are two sides of the same coin,” a highly-placed source in the government told NDTV.

The clarification comes shortly after the Supreme Court red-flagged some of the provisions in the contentious Waqf Amendment Act, which has sparked protests in several parts of the country. Following the red flags, the Centre has paused some provisions in the new law.

The Centre, the sources said, will address all pending Waqf-related petitions in the Supreme Court through due legal process. “Everyone has the right to knock on the doors of the Supreme Court. The Union of India will present its side in the Supreme Court,” the source said.

The Centre’s remarks on the respect of the judiciary come close on the heels of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s strong words against the top court. The Vice-President, also chairman of Rajya Sabha, targeted the top court over its Tamil Nadu judgment that effectively set a deadline for the President and Governors to clear Bills passed by the legislature for the second time. We cannot have a situation where you direct the President of India and on what basis… Article 142 (has become a nuclear missile against Democratic forces, available to the judiciary 24 x 7,” he said.

Doubling down, Mr Dhankhar today stressed that the Parliament is “supreme” and that elected representatives are the ultimate masters of what constitutional content should be.

In its Tamil Nadu judgment, the top court had also said that only courts have the prerogative to provide recommendations regarding the constitutionality of a Bill and the Executive is supposed to exercise restraint in such matters.

In the aftermath of the landmark verdict, the Supreme Court faced criticism from a section of BJP leaders. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey sparked a row when he said Parliament must be shut down if the Supreme Court makes all decisions. “The Supreme Court is crossing its limits…when the Ram Mandir, Krishna Janmabhoomi, or Gyanvapi issue arises, you (Supreme Court) say, ‘Show us the paper’. But for mosques built after the Mughals came, you are saying how will you show papers? The Supreme Court is responsible for inciting religious wars in this country,” he said. Mr Dubey asked how the Supreme Court can set a deadline for President and Governors to clear Bills. BJP leader Dinesh Sharma said no one can “challenge” the President, as the President is “supreme”.

The BJP leadership distanced itself from its leaders’ remarks. “The Bharatiya Janata Party has nothing to do with the statements made by BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma on the judiciary and the Chief Justice of the country. These are their personal statements, but the BJP neither agrees with nor supports such statements. The BJP completely rejects these statements.”

The Opposition has, however, accused the ruling party of threatening the judiciary and trying to weaken it.

Senior judges in the Supreme Court have made it clear that they have taken note of the remarks. Justice BR Gavai, who takes over as Chief Justice of India, mentioned twice yesterday that the top court was being accused of encroaching on the Executive’s domain. And today, Justice Surya Kant, the third most senior judge in the Supreme Court, said the institution of the judiciary comes under attack every day and that they are “not worried”.

Justice Surya Kant’s remarks came as he heard a contempt of court case involving a newspaper report from Karnataka. The lawyer arguing the case pointed to public criticism of the judiciary and urged the Supreme Court to take notice of the contempt charge. In reply, Justice Surya Kant indicated he was “not worried about the institution…”.
