Donald Trump issues new threat after Harvard University defies US govt demands: All you need to know

Donald Trump issues new threat after Harvard University defies US govt demands: All you need to know
Harvard defies Trump, faces $2.3bn federal funding freeze

US President Donald Trump threatened to strip Harvard University of its tax-exempt status, intensifying an ongoing battle between the White House and the nation’s oldest and wealthiest university.
The move came after Harvard rejected a list of policy changes demanded by the Trump administration, including shifts in hiring, admissions, and curriculum.
Just a day earlier, the administration froze over $2 billion in federal funding to the university. According to a person familiar with the president’s thinking, Trump was angered by media coverage of Harvard’s defiance and decided to escalate the pressure campaign, reported NYT.
Trump took to Truth Social and posted, “Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting ‘Sickness?’ … Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!”
Tax-exempt status under fire
While White House officials noted that the IRS will decide independently on tax-exempt matters, Trump has privately indicated he’s committed to taking on Harvard. Losing its nonprofit status could cost the university billions of dollars over time.
Lawrence Summers, former Treasury secretary and Harvard president, responded sharply, “Selective persecution of your political adversaries through the tax system is the stuff of dictatorship… This is unconscionable and wrong.”

Harvard ‘Sets Example’ By Defying Trump, Accepts $2.3 Bn Funding Freeze | Big Fight Explained

IRS boundaries and legal reality
Federal law prevents the president from directly ordering IRS investigations. The agency declined to comment, but experts cast doubt on any serious threat to Harvard’s status.
Former IRS commissioner John Koskinen said, “The chances of getting the IRS to actually revoke the 501(c)(3) status of a major university are almost nonexistent… The problem is you’re causing people to spend a lot of time and money responding and defending their actions.”
Still, the mere prospect of litigation could be an intimidating burden, he noted.
Billions at stake despite Harvard’s wealth
Though Trump’s 2017 tax bill already imposed a levy on large university endowments, Harvard’s broader tax-exempt status allows it to avoid major tax liabilities and attract massive charitable donations.
Harvard’s $50 billion endowment is bolstered by tax-deductible gifts, often from wealthy donors like John Paulson and Ken Griffin.
Summers warned that if Harvard’s tax status were revoked—however unlikely—“It would devastate progress in medical and scientific research, opportunity for the next generation of Americans, and an important magnet for the United States in the world.”
Antisemitism allegations and political context
Trump officials have accused elite universities of fostering antisemitism and suppressing speech. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “Why are the American taxpayers subsidizing a university that has billions of dollars in the bank already? … And we certainly should not be funding a place where such grave antisemitism exists.”
Harvard stands its ground
The funding freeze followed Harvard’s refusal last week to comply with administration demands for policy changes and regular progress reports. University president Alan Garber said in a statement:
“No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.”
Harvard receives about $9 billion in federal support, with most routed through affiliated hospitals and the remainder funding research in areas like cancer, space exploration, and Alzheimer’s.
While the school is financially fortified, other institutions have opted to comply with Trump’s conditions—Columbia University reportedly settled with the administration after facing similar pressure.

Lokayukta gets court nod to continue Muda ‘scam’ probe | India News

Lokayukta gets court nod to continue Muda 'scam' probe

BENGALURU/MYSURU: A special court for elected representatives directed Lokayukta police Tuesday to continue investigations into the Mysore Urban Development Authority (Muda) alternative site allotment scam and submit a final report.
The Bengaluru court was passing its order reserved on protest petitions filed by Mysuru complainant-activist Snehamayi Krishna and ED against the closure report in the case by Lokayukta police.
“The Lokayukta is permitted to conduct further investigation, as requested by them, and file a conclusive final report on or before the next date of hearing (May 7, 2025). Further, ED is considered as aggrieved person for a limited extent. The question of considering the acceptance or rejection of ‘B’ final report filed by the investigating agency is kept pending till filing of the conclusive final report by the investigating agency,” special judge Santosh Gajanana Bhat observed.
In March, Lokayukta police had submitted a preliminary report giving a clean chit to the four accused – CM Siddaramaiah, his wife Parvathi, her elder brother Mallikarjuna Swamy, and landowner Devaraj – saying there was no evidence against them in the alleged scam.
The alleged scam was exposed in 2024 when Krishna petitioned the court stating there were large-scale irregularities in the allotment of alternative sites, particularly 14 sites allotted to the CM’s wife, Parvathi. Accordingly, the court directed Mysuru Lokayukta police wing to register a case and investigate.

‘Ball is in their court on tariffs’: White House says Donald Trump open to a deal with China, but…

'Ball is in their court on tariffs': White House says Donald Trump open to a deal with China, but...
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping

US President Donald Trump has said “the ball is in China’s court,” amid the ongoing tariff war between the two countries, after which America’s tariffs on Chinese goods have reached 145 per cent, while China, in turn, now imposes 125 per cent tariffs on imports from the United States.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a media briefing, “The president has made his position on China quite clear. Although I do have an additional statement that he just shared with me in the Oval Office.”
Leavitt continued, “The ball is in China’s court…China needs to deal with us. We don’t have to make a deal with them. There’s no difference between China and any other country, except they (China) are much larger.”
China and other countries, Leavitt further said quoting Trump, want what the United States has – the American consumer – and put another way, “They need our money.”
She added, “So the president, again, has made it quite clear that he is open to a deal with China, but China needs to make a deal with the United States of America.”
Trade tensions between Washington and Beijing have been flaring; the situation has worsened since Trump took office in January.
The MAGA leader initially imposed tariffs on imports from China over its alleged role in the fentanyl supply chain, and recently stepped up those levels sharply over trade practices Washington deems “unfair.”
America’s tariffs on China include 20 per cent over fentanyl and other illicit drugs, as well as 125 per cent over trade practices.
The Trump administration has, however, allowed certain tech products like smartphones and laptops temporary reprieve from the latest levy.

Preity Zinta Lauds Yuzvendra Chahal’s Heroic 4/28 After PBKS Defend 111 vs KKR In IPL 2025

Punjab Kings defended the lowest-ever total in Indian Premier League (IPL) history as they beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 16 runs in a thrilling match in Mullanpur on Tuesday. Chasing 112 for a win, KKR were comfortably placed at 71 for 3 in 9.1 overs, but they suffered a sensational collapse to be bowled out for 95 in 15.1 overs. KKR lost seven wickets and scored just 24 runs in six overs after that.

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was the main architect of Punjab’s improbable-looking win with his excellent figures of 4/28. He took the crucial wickets of Ajinkya Rahane (17), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (37), Rinku Singh (2) and Ramandeep Singh (0) to orchestrate KKR’s stunning downfall — the last two in consecutive balls in the 12th over.

The win put a broad smile on PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta’s face and she celebrated the win with the PBKS player. She went and hugged Yuzvendra Chahal for his great bowling vs KKR.

Pacer Marco Jansen chipped in with three wickets for 17 runs while Xavier Bartlett, Glenn Maxwell and Arshdeep Singh got one each as KKR allowed PBKS to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat.

The earlier lowest total defended was 116 by Chennai Super Kings against then Kings XI Punjab in 2009.

Sunil Narine (5) was looking for his characteristic explosive start but Jansen had other ideas as he was cleaned up by the South African. That was the start Punjab were looking for and it got even better as Xavier Bartlett got the other opener Quinton de Kock (2) in the next over.

KKR captain Rahane held the innings together for a while along with Raghuvanshi, digging into his vast domestic and international experience.

Rahane was at his best when he lofted a Bartlett half-volley for a straight six into the sightscreen, taking his side to 55 for 2 at the end of powerplay.

The introduction of Chahal in the eighth over did the trick for PBKS as the leg-spinner got Rahane out LBW. Chahal struck again in his next over to give PBSK some hope. He had Raghuvanshi caught at backward point by Bartlett who leaned forward to take a low catch. KKR were 72 for 4 at the halfway stage.

The match seemed to have opened up when Venkatesh Iyer was ruled out LBW off Maxwell in the 11th over, with the third umpire upholding the on-field umpire’s decision after a long look.

Chahal then turned the match on its head as he removed the dangerous Rinku Singh (2) who was foxed by a delivery that sneaked between his bat and pad for Inglis to do the rest behind the stumps.

There was no stopping Chahal as he dismissed Ramandeep Singh (0) in the next ball to leave KKR at a precarious 76 for 7 in 11.4 overs.

Jansen joined the party as he got Harshit Rana (0) out with a short delivery that the batter played on. Andre Russell has not scored in double-digit figures before Tuesday’s match and he was on fire in the 14th over, hitting two sixes and a four to take 16 runs in total.

KKR needed 17 runs from six overs but they have just two wickets in hand.

Vaibhav Arora survived five balls bowled by Arshdeep Singh but he offered a simple catch to Inglis in the final ball of the 15th over.

Earlier, KKR dished out a clinical bowling show to bundle out hosts Punjab Kings out for a mere 111 — the third lowest total in this season of the Indian Premier League here on Tuesday.

PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer‘s ploy to bat first after winning the toss at their home ground backfired as all their batters, except openers Priyansh Arya (22) and Prabhsimran Singh (30) struggled on the home pitch.

Only three more batters — Nehal Wadhera (10), Shashank Singh (18) and Xavier Bartlett (11) — could register double-digit scores.

Some PBKS batters were also guilty of reckless batting and poor shot selection.

Harshit Rana (3/25) was the most successful bowler while Varun Chakaravarthy (2/21) and Sunil Narine (2/14) chipped in with two apiece.

Arya (22 off 12 balls), who hit a sensational hundred to win PBKs’ match against Chennai Super Kings, struck two fours off Anrich Nortje in the second over to set the tone of the home side’s innings.

Prabhsimran then struck a six and two fours in the next over bowled by Vaibhav Arora, who conceded 20 runs.

Rana was welcomed by Arya with a six but the bowler had the last laugh as the batter holed out to Ramandeep Singh.

In-form PBKS captain Iyer was dismissed first ball with Ramandeep taking a stunning catch.

Ramandeep ran a few yards and made a full length head-first dive and grabbed the ball inches above the turf.

Punjab’s shoddy batting show continued as Josh Inglis (2) was bowled by Chakaravarthy as the home side were three wickets down in the fifth over.

Prabhsimran, however, was not affected by the fall of wickets as he smacked Rana for two consecutive sixes in the sixth over. But he got out two balls later to become Rana’s third victim of the day.

Ramandeep also grabbed his third catch of the day, all of them off the bowling of Rana, as the duo made a perfect pair.

With 54 for 4 at the end of powerplay, Punjab were clearly in trouble.

Gajab Swad Ba! Japan’s envoy takes a bite of Bihar’s soul – litti-chokha | Patna News

Patna: When ‘litti’ meets ‘chokha’, it is Bihar on a plate. Smoky, spicy, earthy and soul-stirring, this humble delicacy has long been the pride of kitchens in Bihar. And now, it has charmed a special guest from the Land of the Rising Sun.
Japan’s ambassador to India and Bhutan, ONO Keiichi, has become an overnight favourite among people of Bihar after sharing a heartfelt post of him relishing the iconic litti-chokha during a recent visit to Bodh Gaya, the sacred land of Buddha.
“Namaste, Bihar! Finally had the chance to try the world-famous litti chokha – Gajab Swad Ba! (It has a great taste),” he wrote, blending diplomacy with a Bhojpuri flair that immediately won over hearts on social media. The post, accompanied by a photo of him enjoying the dish with a spoon, captured the moment a foreign dignitary connected with Bihar not just through policy, but through litti and chokha.
Keiichi’s post on X racked up over 2.66 lakh views, sparking a frenzy of affectionate and humorous replies. People of Bihar, known for their warmth and wit, responded with passion.
One user suggested, “I highly recommend trying the Champaran-style mutton from Bihar; it is a delicious dish that you won’t regret experiencing!” Another user chimed in with a friendly tip, “Ungali bor ke khawal jayela… tab asal swad bujhay!” (Dip your fingers, not a spoon… then you will understand the real taste).
And Ram Tiwari offered a nugget of wisdom – “Gajab Bihar me swagat ba. Please carry some sattu with you, sir. Fast food nahin, fastest food hai hamara!”
The ambassador’s visit was not all culinary exploration. Ryutu Saito, an official accompanying Keiichi, said the envoy also visited the Bihar National Highway Improvement Project, funded by the Japan govt. “The project is expected to greatly reduce travel time within the state and contribute significantly to its tourism and economy,” Keiichi wrote in another post, striking a perfect chord between cultural curiosity and developmental commitment.
Bihar’s litti-chokha has long held celebrity status beyond its borders. Bollywood superstar Amir Khan made headlines in 2014 when he stopped by a roadside stall near Patna zoo to relish the dish while promoting his film. And none other than Amitabh Bachchan has also sung its praises.

Amid Trump’s Threats, China Issues 85,000 Visas To “Indian Friends”

The Chinese Embassy in India has issued over 85,000 visas to Indian citizens between January 1 and April 9, 2025, marking a significant step towards strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations.

According to Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong, “As of April 9, 2025, the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in India have issued more than 85,000 visas to Indian citizens traveling to China this year. Welcome more Indian friends to visit China, experience an open, safe, vibrant, sincere and friendly China.” He said this in a post on X.

Visa Relaxations for Indian Travelers

The Chinese government has introduced several relaxations to facilitate smoother travel between India and China:

– No Online Appointment: Indian applicants can now directly submit their visa applications at visa centers on working days without prior online appointments.
– Biometric Exemption: Travelers visiting China for a short time are exempt from providing biometric data, reducing processing time.
– Visa Fees: Now, a Chinese visa can be obtained at a much lower rate, making travel more affordable for Indian visitors.
– Quicker Processing Times: The visa approval timeline has become more streamlined, allowing for quicker issuance and benefiting both business and leisure travelers.
– Tourism: China is actively promoting travel for Indian tourists, showcasing its cultural and seasonal attractions, such as festivals and destinations.

Economic and Trade Relations

Since the start of his presidential term, Donald Trump has been threatening countries about slapping tariffs on them – and especially on China, it’s top economic adversary but major trading partner.
The Chinese Embassy spokesperson, Yu Jing, emphasised the importance of India-China economic and trade relations, stating that “China-India economic and trade relationship is based on complementarity and mutual benefit. Facing the U.S. abuse of tariffs… the two largest developing countries should stand together to overcome the difficulties.” Yu Jing further added that “Trade and tariff wars have no winners. All countries should uphold the principles of extensive consultation, practice true multilateralism, jointly oppose all forms of unilateralism and protectionism.”

Soft Power Gesture

Although the diplomatic relations between India and China have been rife with challenges,
especially the ongoing military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), this move can be viewed as a soft power move to show openness towards India and extend goodwill, as this rebuilds trust from bottom-up, even with officials trying to resolve border and trade issues.

Promoting People-to-People Diplomacy

The surge in visa issuance reflects a renewed commitment between India and China to promote cultural, educational, business, and tourism exchanges. China has long been a popular destination for Indian students, particularly those pursuing medical degrees, with thousands enrolled in Chinese universities. The resumption of student travel has been welcomed by many, as travel disruptions due to the pandemic had left many Indian students unable to pursue their studies.

“Pakistan Played A Double Game With Taliban”: S Jaishankar On Terrorism

New Delhi:

Pakistan got caught in its own web of deceit when its was double-crossing the Taliban and the other side, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said today, as he spoke about how Pakistan lost its way in Afghanistan, only to be trapped in its own creation of terror.

Speaking at the Charotar University of Science and Technology in Gujarat, the foreign minister said, “Pakistan was playing a double game. It was with both the Taliban and also with the other side. But, when the Americans left, the double game could not be sustained.”

Noting that it was Pakistan that set up the entire terrorism “industry” in the region, Dr Jaishankar said, “Whatever benefits they were getting out of the double game, that also went down (after the US left Afghanistan). Moreover, the very terrorism industry they (Pakistan) had promoted came back to bite them.”

He pinpointed the 2008 Mumbai terror attack as the “turning point” from where relations between India and Pakistan went south, and never recovered.

“Indians collectively felt that such behaviour from a neighbouring country could no longer be tolerated,” he said speaking about the Mumbai terror attack, adding that “That feeling was very very strong in Indian society, but it may not have been entirely understood at that time by the Government at that time, which is a different matter.”

Highlighting the contrast in the journey of both nations, especially in the last ten years, Dr Jaishankar said, “India has changed. I wish I could say Pakistan has changed too. They unfortunately, in many ways, are continuing their bad habits.”

“After 2014, when the government changed in India, Pakistan was given a firm message that there will be consequences if acts of terrorism are committed,” Dr Jaishankar said, adding that “During this period, we (India) have grown economically and politically, and our standing in the world has improved. But, Pakistan continued the old playbook.”

But India has now surged ahead, he said, adding that there is no need for Indians to “waste precious time” on Pakistan.

The foreign minister’s remarks come days after 26/11 Mumbai terror attack plotter Tahawwur Rana was extradited to India by the United States. Both countries have a special special and privileged partnership and have been cooperating on intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism.

After Rana’s extradition, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said, “We extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face charges for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. Together, with India, we’ve long sought justice for the 166 people, including 6 Americans, who lost their lives in these attacks. I’m glad that day has come.”

To this, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had replied, “Appreciate the counter-terrorism cooperation between our two countries. This is indeed a big step in ensuring justice for the victims of 26/11 attacks.”
