NEW DELHI: Fugitive diamond merchantMehul Choksi, a key accused in the Rs 14,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud case, was arrested on Saturday by Belgian authorities on India’s extradition request.
Choksi’s arrest was based on two non-bailable warrants issued by a Mumbai court, dated May 23, 2018, and June 15, 2021, according to people familiar with the development.
Indian officials had earlier asked Belgium to initiate extradition proceedings after locating Choksi in the country. Sources said he was allegedly planning to move to Switzerland for medical treatment at a cancer hospital.
In 2018, Mehul Choksi, his nephew Nirav Modi, along with their family members, employees, and several bank officials, were booked by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the multi-billion-dollar fraud at Punjab National Bank’s Brady House branch in Mumbai.
According to the agencies, Choksi, his company Gitanjali Gems, and others allegedly colluded with bank officials to fraudulently obtain Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) and enhance Foreign Letters of Credit (FLCs) without adhering to the required procedures.
This led to substantial wrongful losses for the bank.

Silchar protesters hurl stones at cops, get lathi charged | India News

Silchar protesters hurl stones at cops, get lathi charged

SILCHAR: A protest against the Waqf Act turned violent in Silchar of Assam’s Cachar district Sunday after demonstrators hurled stones at police, which resorted to a cane charge to restore law and order.
Muslims from Berenga, Madhurband, and Kanakpur gathered at Badri Bridge in the morning to take out a protest rally to Madhurband. When the rally reached its destination, several protesters sat on the road in Chamragudam locality, leading to an altercation with police. It was then that some protesters hurled stones at police.
DM Mridul Yadav issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS across the district in the evening.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta said, “With the model code of conduct in place for the upcoming panchayat polls, a protest march was conducted without any permission. While the rally was initially peaceful, a group of protesters breached police barricades and advanced towards Silchar town, with some miscreants even throwing stones at the cops.” The guilty will face legal repercussions, Mahatta added.
Azad Hossain Majumder, representing demonstrators, condemned the behaviour of some protesters and said he supports police action against the alleged perpetrators.

Netanyahu Macron Palestinian State: ‘Gravely mistaken’: Israeli PM Netanyahu blasts Macron’s recognition plan for Palestinian state, warns against ‘illusions’

'Gravely mistaken': Israeli PM Netanyahu blasts Macron’s recognition plan for Palestinian state, warns against ‘illusions’
Israeli PM Netanyahu blasts Macron’s recognition plan for Palestinian state, warns against ‘illusions’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticised French President Emmanuel Macron over his recent statement suggesting France could recognise a Palestinian state within months.
In a strongly worded statement on Sunday, Netanyahu said, “President Macron is gravely mistaken in continuing to promote the idea of a Palestinian state in the heart of our land, a state whose sole aspiration is the destruction of Israel.”
Macron had told France 5 television on Wednesday that France might officially recognise Palestine during a UN peace conference planned in New York this June. Macron said the move was aimed at triggering a broader regional peace initiative, stating, “We must move towards recognition, and we will do so in the coming months.”
He added that recognition should lead to “a collective dynamic” and eventually, reciprocal recognition of Israel by Arab nations.
In response, Netanyahu accused Palestinian leaders of staying silent after the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack, calling it “the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.” He said, “We will not endanger our existence over illusions detached from reality, and we will not accept moral lectures about establishing a Palestinian state that would threaten Israel’s survival, especially not from those who oppose granting independence to Corsica, New Caledonia, French Guiana, and other territories, whose independence would pose no threat to France whatsoever.”
His son, Yair Netanyahu, took to social media to express his anger. In a Saturday night post on X, he wrote in English, “Screw you!” and called for independence for several French territories including Corsica and French Polynesia, while mistakenly referring to “French Guinea” instead of French Guiana.
The younger Netanyahu also accused France of “neoimperialism in West Africa,” a remark that tapped into ongoing tensions in former French colonies.
France has long supported a two-state solution, including after the October 2023 Hamas attack.
However, formal recognition would mark a significant policy shift. Nearly 150 countries currently recognise Palestine, and recent moves by Ireland, Spain, Norway and Slovenia were largely driven by outrage over Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Macron later clarified his remarks on Friday, stating on X, “I support the legitimate right of Palestinians to a state and to peace, just as I support the right of Israelis to live in peace and security.” He added, “Yes to peace. Yes to Israel’s security. Yes to a Palestinian state without Hamas.”
Macron stressed that France’s recognition aims to strengthen peace and oppose actors like Iran, who deny Israel’s right to exist. He also reiterated that Gaza is “not a real estate project,” countering US President Donald Trump’s earlier suggestion of turning the region into a tourism hub.

Panel turns down road ministry proposal for 2 tunnels in Jammu & Kashmir | India News

Panel turns down road ministry proposal for 2 tunnels in Jammu & Kashmir

NEW DELHI: The proposal to build two tunnels — Singhpora-Vailoo and Sudhmahadev-Dranga — on the Anantnag-Chenani corridor in J&K has hit hurdles, with the expenditure secretary-headed Public Investment Board (PIB) recently turning down recommendation for their construction, citing multiple reasons, including cost. Earlier, the bid for the Singhpora-Vailoo tunnel was scrapped.
Besides the huge cost of around Rs 8,900 crore and that there being an existing road connecting the origin and destination in respect of each of the two packages, the board also recorded that these did not fall under strategic roads of the defence ministry, though officials from the National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) under the road transport ministry made such a claim in the March 22 meeting.
Last year, the home ministry had not given clearance to the foreign contractor, which had quoted the lowest amount for the Singhpora-Vailoo tunnel project, resulting in termination of the tendering process. Bids for the project were invited in 2023.
The PIB, which took up the projects proposed by NHIDCL, also recorded that the agency did not provide traffic details on the existing and proposed road between the origin and destination. Sources said the inter-ministerial panel, which appraises all public-funded projects before these are placed before the Cabinet for approval, also took note that there was no evidence of direct benefit out of the two projects.
The PIB also noted that there is a good quality alternative road.
Now, with the PIB turning them down, there is uncertainty of the projects taking off any time soon. Since the finance ministry directed the road transport ministry not to approve any fresh project under Bharatmala, all highway works costing beyond Rs 1,000 crore need to go to the Cabinet for approval after appraisal by the PIB and the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Appraisal Committee in case of fully public-funded and PPP projects, respectively.
“The recent development and observation of PIB has shown how there may be many cases where projects not deserving to be taken up might have been cleared under Bharatmala. If this project had been bid out, these facts wouldn’t have come out,” said a source.

Ignored India Star Karun Nair Slams IPL Fifty After 7 Years. Internet Says “What A Story”

Karun Nair smashed his first IPL half-century in seven years, taking Jasprit Bumrah to the cleaners in the process, as Delhi Capitals (DC) aimed to chase 206 against Mumbai Indians (MI). Brought in as an impact player and playing his first game of the season, Karun slammed his fifty in just 22 balls. He hit two boundaries off Bumrah in the latter’s first over, before thrashing him for two sixes and 18 runs in his second. Nair’s innings propelled DC to 72 in the powerplay alone.

Nair had been in excellent form for Vidarbha in domestic cricket, and seems to have translated his form into the biggest T20 league in the world.

His incredible knock sent social media into a frenzy.

A relieved Hardik Pandya credited ‘impact sub’ Karn Sharma for showing a lot of heart to fashion Mumbai Indians’ 12-run win against Delhi Capitals here on Sunday, a result that helped the visitors get their IPL campaign back on track.

DC were cruising at 119 for one just after the halfway stage but were eventually bowled out for 193 in 19 overs, with spinner Karn playing a pivotal role by taking three wickets for 36 runs.

It was skipper Rohit Sharma who suggested to coach Mahela Jayawardene to bring Karn into the attack and also requested a ball change after the 11th over.

“Absolutely. Winning is always special. Especially in games like this. You have to keep fighting and it means a lot,” said Pandya at the post-match presentation when asked if he felt relieved after MI secured only their second win of the season.

“(Karn was) Fantastic. Coming in and bowling the way he bowled, showed a lot of heart, especially at a small ground like that.” Karun Nair’s whirlwind 89 went in vain, and Pandya admitted the knock took them by surprise.

“We were running out of options regarding what to bowl at him. The way he took on our bowlers, took his chances, and the way he executed — it shows the hard work he has put in. I think he took us by surprise.” DC batters suffered a dramatic collapse that included three successive run outs, ending their chase at 193.

“I always believe fielding is something that can change the game upside down. We were switched on, didn’t give up, and they got the chances and converted.”

Gang Sold Babies To Rich Families In Delhi-NCR, Busted; Mastermind On Run

New Delhi:

The Delhi Police have busted a human trafficking network that sold newborns to rich families in the national capital and nearby cities.

Three members of the gang were arrested in Delhi’s Dwarka, the police said. The gang was active in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).

A four-day-old newborn was also rescued, the police said, adding the mastermind of the gang is on the run and police teams are looking for her.

The gang has sold over 30 children to rich families in Delhi-NCR so far, the police said. The gang members often kidnapped children from poor families from the Gujarat and Rajasthan border.

The three arrested people have been identified as Yasmin, Anjali, and Jitendra.

The police said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) earlier arrested Anjali in another human trafficking case. She returned to the criminal world after coming out on bail, the police said.

During the investigation, the Delhi Police team analysed the call detail records (CDRs) of over 20 suspicious mobile numbers.

“The team worked on classified information for 20 consecutive days after which they arrested the three people in Uttam Nagar on April 8,” Dwarka DCP Ankit Chauhan said.

During interrogation, they said they brought newborns from Rajasthan and Gujarat on the instructions of a 40-year-old woman named Saroj, the gang leader, and sold the babies to rich families in Delhi-NCR for Rs 5 to Rs 10 lakh per child.

Saroj allegedly dealt directly with the rich families.

Most of the children were stolen from the tribal community in Pali, an area on Gujarat and Rajasthan border.

Saroj gave the task of stealing children to Yasmeen, after which she used to steal children from the Gujarat-Rajasthan border. After the children reached Saroj, she would tell Anjali the location of the ‘delivery’.

Saroj would then collect money directly and everyone would be given their share. Anjali and Yasmeen have previously donated their eggs illegally. The families to whom the children were sold are also being identified, Delhi Police said, adding legal action will be taken against them.

Jasprit Bumrah and Karun Nair involved in a heated spat© X (Twitter)

Karun Nair and Jasprit Bumrah were involved in a heated on-field spat during the IPL 2025 encounter between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians on Sunday. Karun looked in stunning form as he slammed a 22-ball half-century and dominated proceedings against Bumrah. He was ultimately dismissed for a 40-ball 89 but his performance earned him a lot of praise. Nair had a small collision with Bumrah while running behind the wickets and that was the start of the argument between the two players. Bumrah was absolutely fuming and after Karun explained his side, things settled down a bit. Karun even had a conversation with Hardik but Rohit Sharma‘s reaction to the entire situation has already gone viral.

Coming to the match, Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 12 runs.

Sent in to bat, Tilak Varma hit a 33-ball 59 to power Mumbai Indians to 205 for five.

Ryan Rickelton (41 off 25 balls), Suryakumar Yadav (40 off 28 balls) and Naman Dhir (38 off 17 balls) also made useful contributions.

In reply, DC were all out for 193 in 19 overs, despite Karun Nair’s 40-ball 89.

Karn Sharma (3/36) claimed three wickets, while Mitchell Santner (2/43) took two wickets.

For DC, Vipraj Nigam (2/41) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/23) snapped two wickets each, while Mukesh Kumar (1/38) took one.

A few ‘abnormalities’
The exam summary noted only a few “abnormalities,” including minor damage to Trump’s skin due to sun, as well as a scarring on his right ear from a gunshot wound after he was shot at in an assassination attempt in July 2024.
The summary also noted Trump previously had cataract surgery, a common procedure among aging people. The surgery typically involves removal of a cloudy eye lens; an artificial lens is used as replacement to help clear up vision.

  • 16:17 (IST)

RR vs RCB LIVE: 4, 4 Parag!

Dropped chance? Riyan Parag is getting into the runs now. First timed well through extra cover, and then it was going straight at Yash Dayal but he can’t grab it! Should’ve done a lot better on that occasion.

    RR 77/1 (10)

  • 16:11 (IST)

    RR vs RCB LIVE: Four!

First boundary for Riyan Parag. Like Samson, he’s taking his time to settle in, but times it beautifully through third man. Late cut, placed between the fielders and it runs away for 4. Rajasthan Royals are barely going over 7 runs an over, though.

    RR 65/1 (9)

  • 16:04 (IST)

    RR vs RCB LIVE: OUT!

Krunal Pandya makes the difference! First over of spin for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and the tactic has worked. Samson has had a terrible stay at the crease, and he gets stumped by Jitesh on this occasion. 15 runs off 19 balls for RR’s captain.

  • 16:01 (IST)

Sanju Samson trying to break free, doesn’t get the timing but it goes beyond the chasing fielders and lands safely. Samson really struggling, on 8 runs off 13 balls now. Jaiswal, on the other end, is on 30 off 20.

    RR 40/0 (5.3)

  • 15:50 (IST)

RR vs RCB LIVE: Samson struggling

Sanju Samson has not got going in the early overs here. Just 5 runs off 10 balls for the right-hander. Jaiswal is dealing in boundaries at the other end, but the RR captain has been kept quiet by the RCB pacers so far.

    RR 24/0 (4)

  • 15:46 (IST)

RR vs RCB LIVE: Big shout!

Josh Hazlewood is into the attack and he’s creating problems straight away. A mishit for Jaiswal earns him a boundary on the first ball of the over, but Hazlewood comes back sharply with a big appeal for caught-behind. Umpire shakes his head.

Replays show it hit the pad! Could that have been LBW if they took a review?

    RR 23/0 (3.2)

  • 15:45 (IST)

RR vs RCB LIVE: Good comeback by Bhuvneshwar

Economical from Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the early stages. Has given away just 11 runs in his first two overs. Only 19 runs in the first three overs for RR, they’ll hope to get rolling soon. Samson particularly cautious at the beginning.

    RR 23/0 (3.1)
