IIT aspirant dies by suicide in Hyderabad: Jumps off metro station in Saroornagar; family says he was depressed over JEE results

HYDERABAD: An 18-year-old student preparing for the IIT JEE died by suicide on Friday by jumping from the Victoria Memorial Metro Station in Saroornagar, allegedly due to depression.The student, J Harshith from Almasguda, had recently completed his Intermediate education and was attending coaching classes in Madhapur.“He left home around 6am to attend class. At 3.30pm, he called me and said he couldn’t cope with the depression and had decided to end his life. Before I could ask where he was, he abruptly cut the call,” said his mother, Prabhavati. “Half an hour later, the police called and informed me that my son had jumped from the Metro station.”According to Saroornagar inspector V Saidi Reddy, Harshith died by suicide by jumping from the Metro station premises. “Based on his mother’s complaint, we’ve registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (abetment of suicide),” the officer said.“I believe he was devastated after not clearing the JEE Main. He was under a lot of pressure,” Prabhavati added. His body was sent for postmortem. tnn
